Let's not forget that it's just a game. Cullen and Anders aren't real, so it's not as though anyone's attacking a real life individual.

Indeed, that's what keeps me from getting personally invested. I don't get too fluffed about Cullen hate. But I do take offense when people besmirch US as people. It's a line that I think needs to be upheld and respected. For instance, I'm not trying to diss Anders' fans and I don't want them to feel like I'm killing their joy so I edited my post to reflect a more nuetral stance on him. It surprises me how fantastically I failed to remain in the middle on him when I managed to keep my fangirling of Cullen in check. :o

Edit: To which I must apologize to Berelinde. But I also feel you're mistaken. I didn't go into a rage over people saying hurtful things about Cullen. I went into a rage over people saying erroneous things about US. A post that says "I get it. You like the guy. But I'm sick of hearing about him." says more against US as fans and people than Cullen. THAT is what I went into a rage over. They crossed that imaginary boundary between characters and the fans.

Thanks. The post in the topic you made is a lot more neutral now. For all we know, he's busy trying to prevent the pursuit of justice (with the little J) from turning into blind retribution, trying to prevent his fellow mages from doing to the templars what has been done to them. It takes a lot of work to get a large rock rolling, but once it has momentum behind it, just as much effort must be put into keeping it on course.

For what it's worth, Anders fans don't really get a lot of hate pointed at them. Any more than "We've heard it already," which we're pretty much used to, and "You're wrong," which surprisingly few people seem to realize is an opinion, not fact. What we get frequently, and what has the potential to make me lose my cool (depending on how it's phrased), is the assertion that our choices are somehow less valid than other players' and that the consequences of those choices should be negated in the future. So yeah, sorry. You probably did not realize it, but you hit a sore spot.

At the end of the day, we like the characters we like. It gets tricky when our tastes cross political lines, but it happens.

And dang it, I've got ToP, but I'm at work and don't have an image to post. Sorry!

I'm not gay/bi myself. I just think Cullen himself is one of the most interesting non-companions we've seen so far. He showed great character development through two games and you have a lot of potential for more growth there. Cullen is guy going somewhere in the world and I'd like to see more. I don't like it when people generalize groups either but that's how it works on BSN.

Just like I'm a mindless CoD fan if I play that game. Nah, I don't like the strategic gameplay in DAO(when I actually do). It's only one way for that group and that's it. As if their gaming tastes are superior to mine. Narcissistic much?

I know you meant it to be more nuanced, but nuance is lost on the general BSN crowd. Plus anytime you talk about characters you don't like (even if it's cloaked under the guise of "characters I don't feel should return for such-and-such reason), you are going to upset some people, and understandably so. It's understandable because someone like berelinde has had to put up with extreme Anders-hate and fans-of-Anders-hate for over a year now, so even something as mild as "I don't think Anders should return for such and such reason" (or whatever) is going to be hurtful and just pick at an old wound.

Similarly, whenever I see anyone say the slightest negative thing about Fenris it ticks me off, and I just have to navigate away!

I mean there are characters in the DA and ME universe that I really dislike, strongly dislike even, may even hate. But I don't spread that hate because what is the friggin point lol so you guys probably wouldn't even know who those characters are :P

I did not realize I'd hit a sore spot. It wasn't my intention because I do not believe Anders' fans' choices are less valid. I just know that for me, I didn't like him and while that may be okay to state; doing so with the assertion that I can only imagine having to kill him in a post about character relevance is little more than fanservice on my part. Can I see him returning? Yes. Do I want that? Only if I get to kill him. It's a sentiment echoed by many Cullen haters. That doesn't mean that Anders' return can't swing the other way though. It may not be an option I'll choose but it should exist all the same. For over looking that, I do apologize.

Actually, that's why I'm hoping that previous companions don't return. Fans get to keep their happy endings, haters get to keep their hate, and everybody wins. :)

I don't mind previous characters coming back as cameos, but I wouldn't want the romancable ones back as companions again.

I haven't played ME, sadly.

I know people are going to have their reasons for liking/disliking certain characters. I don't want people to blithely dismiss a character just because they don't like them. I'd rather they objectively look at the denizens of Thedas, that we know, and see what they could bring to the story. Like and dislike are irrelevant. I didn't mention Fenris because I see him having no relevance, not because I dislike him. I mentioned Leliana, whom I dislike, because I do see her as having relevance. I want to conduct discussion along these veins. That was my hope anyway.

Why, are you worried Anders will have aged 30 years prematurely and Fenris will look like an alien

If you knifed Anders, he comes back a la Justice and inhabits someone lovely and unexpected... like Varric. And Fenris is already one probe away from looking like an alien. LOL

Aww, I think Fenris is precious. Only thing that bothers me on him is the long neck.

I had a brain disconnect between "someone lovely" and "Varric." LOL

I didn't like Fenris personally. Disliked Anders character development from Awakening to DA2 too. It's almost like Anders is hardened and very bitter about the world in DA2(understandable, doesn't mean I have to like it).

I actually killed Fenris my first time through. I tried to avoid it but uh, that didn't go well. It was in my defense anyway. He attacked me. Wasn't like I wanted to strike him down.

By lovely I meant fun to be around. Varric was a cool cat! And I didn't mind Fenris but you're right.... that neck was a bit wonkerjawed and put that with the big eyes and he just reminded me of a grey. Image IPB

I think Kirkwall in general was in need of a dermatologist. Alistair looked like he had big pores too. I'll blame the red lyrium idol.

And I'm not usually big on dwarves... no pun intended.

LOL I love that it's "the most wonderful time of the year" and we're focused on the characters and things we *didn't* like. I thought most of the DA2 characters are pretty smokin', particularly as pixels go. But I did want to yell at Fenris, "Stand up straight!!" Up close, though, during the cutscenes, I thought he was pretty much perfect. :D

For me when I bring up a character I don't like or just don't particularly care for in a thread I try to same something nice or what others may see in that character because honestly sometimes when I do that it gets me excited about the character, hence how I got into Cullen and makes you in my opinion a little less biased.
