I just wonder why its there, I mean, it doesn't look connected to any piece of his armor. It looks like he just chucked it on.
You know those Fereldans, they love their poofy shoulders!

Looking at that concept outfit again, I'm wondering just what bits could be removed in order to be replaced by different pieces of armour/cloth/etc. Doesn't look as customisable as Cassandra's did.
... I guess it could just be his npc/cameo outfit?
It might be that Cullen's furry collar is his "constant" or the thing that makes his armors particularly his style. The Grey Warden seemed to keep a good portion of his initial appearance if you look at his waist down to his knees. Cassandra seems to keep her coat and that general shape.
It might be that the customization in the game is kept to the aestetic, but the sihloettes will stay for the most the same so even if they were just the shape we could probably tell who it is.

My head canon is that he just grabbed any items of clothing he could and threw it all on in a hurry during his escape from the Gallows in Kirkwall LOL!
... Maybe it holds some sentimental significance? Or it's really bloody cold where he's currently situated!

Can't he just keep on what he's wearing from the waist down and change the top bit?

It just snaps in place to his armor

Maybe the fur thing is his shaved beard? He loved it so much but had to shave it yet keeps it for wearing? Thats why he is so clean shaven...its his secret obsession.
Mmmm, prickly scarf of shaving!

I imagine where we find Cullen it's pretty cold, like tundra, extra snowy cold, not Ferelden cold. If not it could be that the templars of Orlais wear extravagant armor and he sort of garnished his own armor to "fit in" among the remaining loyalists.
It could also be from that robe like thing he has on. The red robe with gold edging looks like it has the fur stitched on.

... Omg, I had just had a thought!
What if that castle we "acquire" actually belongs to him/his family or he's in command of it for whatever reason? So when we encounter him/recruit him he's there in that snowy setting and he gives it to us to use, thus explaining all the fur and weird layers!
Head canon accepted!

Maybe, but the iconography might be what's holding that back. I mean I'm probably wrong and the fur bit is just specific to that armor, but it might be his "iconic" look, because idk if the devs want our companions armors tied to those different factions, barring the Inquisition if we're actually tied to that group.

That'd be awesome, maybe he donated it to the Inquisition in a similar way to how Fergus/Alistair gives Amaranthine to the Grey Wardens and have some lore on the keep like Nathaniel did when he talked about his grandmother and father.
I always imagined that place was like a prison though, but that might be a bit of an overused trope, though not one I'm against. You meet the most interesting people in prison....not that I would know...don't look at me like that Lola, not one single SOAP joke...I mean it Lola...don't do it<_<

Perhaps it belonged to the Templars originally, but was left to the "good" Templars that remained loyal by the Divine? So Cullen and the remaining loyalists are hauled up in that castle and when we go off to seek their help, he's like "you're welcome to use this place as your own" because he's either feeling nice, or all his mates just got blown up in the magical blast along with the Divine.
OR!!!
Maybe he's imprisioned in there by the "bad" Templars for insubordination, we go there, break him out, clear the place of "bad" Templars and end up taking the place over as our base of operation, recruiting Cullen in the process!

I like the second one better lol, just because if the former owners are still there it makes it kind of awkward to start changing things know what I mean? Plus having a castle that has fallen into disrepair and making it a stronghold like no other would be awesome. That was one of my favorite parts of Awakening.

R2: Can you think of any awesome/funny/dramatic scenes in DA2 that would make for some cool new pictures of Cullen?
sorry, was catching up on some TV.
So far I've heard a knife throwing scene which I can't identify (all I can think of is Isabela throwing at one of the bad guys in the Chantry during her first quest) and Cullen talking to closet guy... Or is that Cullen AS the closet guy? LOL
Hmm, dunno what else. Cullen as drunk Alistair? Cullen as Tallis doing the wyvern mating dance thing?

Lol yeah. Tallis says that it was a nug call to attract the Wyverns and the Arishok replacing her would be...hilarious. Anyway night R2, sweet dreams.

Oh to see that mans hands and lower arms again... Unless they're as bad as the hands in DA2, in which case, keep them covered!
