Thanks :) I spent a bit too much quality time with Photoshop yesterday I think ;-)

Okay now I'm just scared (or posting here too much.  Might be time to actually leave the house...nah).  Edited for ToP:

This is from the new TV series - Cullen PI.   Praise the Maker and various others, he's here to keep the City safe from the Male Ficar gang.

Image IPB

Okay, okay, sorry mods I know that's only vaguely related, but, hey!  Its Cullen in sunnies, how wrong can that be?

It was time well spent.

I tried asking this before, but my internet connection got flaky and I couldn't post.

For those of you who run Mage!Hawkes, how do you justify Cullen not betraying Hawke when he knows what he is? Does your headcanon Hawke refrain from casting spells in front of him during Enemies Among us? Is Cullen's grattitude enough to prevent him from hauling Hawke off to the Gallows? Does Cullen get knocked unconscious or mistake Hawke's spellcasting for a natural phenomenon? I'm just curious about the role-playing reasons that others have found for Cullen turning a blind eye.

Yeah, I do know it's game mechanics that prevent templars from noticing the party's spell use, but I like to try to find a good RP reason for it. For example, during the First Sacrifice, I like to think that Emeric was dazed to begin with and mistook all the spellcasting for a chokedamp explosion.

Or maybe nobody who likes Cullen plays mages? I can't be the only one!

 @berelinde - ty :)

I often play mages - I'm lazy and like ranged attacks.  The whole not noticing thing is very irritating to me and often causes me to have conversations with Cullen.  That's me, me, not Hawke, me.  Yes, I know that's odd.

Cullen:  They must always be watched.
Me:  Oookay, so, what, you were so busy watching Anders you didn't notice Hawke CASTING A BLOODY GREAT FIREBALL just here?  Goodo then.

Okay serious answer - I'm not sure how to RP it to be honest.  From Cullen's chatter he doesn't seem to even start hearing rumours until late in Act 1.   He's standing there - two feet away - or closer - and your char is tossing spells about like its Satinalia and she's been hired as entertainment.

He simply can't not notice.  Even if you RP it that he's wilfully blind (which I think is very OOC but that's only imho) then that makes him look like a bad Templar.  Which of all the things he is, that isn't one.

To be truthful I handwave it - which is shoddy RP on my part (but I'm a shoddy RPer).  That doesn't help you though...thinking....

He might be distracted by the horror of finding that Wilmod is an abomination.  Its still early enough in the game for his experiences with Uldred to be fresh in his mind and affecting his judgment.  Perhaps seeing Wilmod turn and summon those Shades gives him vivid flashbacks and he can't see or concentrate on anything anything else for a short time?

Hmm not sure if that works.   Perhaps someone better at rp'ing has an answer.

Edited - too many horrors and not enough vivid

Well, I already wrote it as old-fashioned discretion. He can tell the difference between the big evils and the little ones. In Maurevar Carver's day, that was more common than it is in the present day, but If you're a bad RPer, I'm an AU fanfictionist. Is that a word?

As for the rumors he hears later in the game, I interpret that as warnings to Hawke to be more discrete. "You know, if people keep talking about you, I'm going to have to do something official. Let's be a little more discrete, m'kay?"

Anyway, thanks for the answer. I hope other folks chime in. I'm sure I'm not the first person to wonder how to handle this in fanfic. I don't like making him look like a bad templar, but I'd rather make him uncharacteristically discreet than uncharacteristically stupid. Of all things, he is not that.

AU fanfictionist - I like it!

The first time I heard this I was playing a warrior Hawke and he says it in relation to Bethany.  I remember thinking "ooh he's warning me!"  It made me think of those people who use Cullen's taking Bethany away as an excuse not to like him.  I thought - if only you'd clicked on him during Act 1 - she'd be safe in the Deep... oh wait.  No wins there I suppose.

@Berelinde, I like that interpretation of Cullen's rumor comment, that he's being discreet on your behalf. I always sorta figured that he just wouldn't tell about your mage-hood because he owes you one. (and I think I've seen that in a couple other fics...?) If I squint at the various things he says during the Wilmod quest, I sorta can convince myself of that.

But one other way I've seen that I like, as far as something I could see happening in RL/fanfic, is what Bekkael did in her Twisted fic, where Hawke totally hides the fact that she's a mage. I mean, realistically those mages need to be pretty circumspect around Kirkwall, in general, and templars, in particular. I could imagine them just not casting in a dicey situation.

@Avilia, *sigh* Cullen PI -- you've sent me back to eighties, when mustaches and short shorts were sexy. Great -- now I've got the Magnum theme music stuck in my head...

Yeah, I like that scenario, too, but I'm kinda funny with what I'll let into my fanfic. I'm OK with NPCs that exhibit minor OOC behavior, and "out of game" conversations are the meat-and-potatoes of any fanfic, but when it comes to major plot points or combat, if I can't play it like that (i.e. Anders can't help Mage!Hawke break Idunna's compulsion or battles cannot be won with melee mages), I can't write it like that. So I need to find a workaround. Fortunately, there really aren't *that* many battles where you're fighting in front of templars. At least those where you aren't actually fighting templars, in which case there won't be any survivors, anyway.

Anyway, sorry for derailing the thead like this. I've just always been curious about the various means authors and players use to find RP reasons for a game mechanic.

Meant to add, before I was so blown away with laughter by Avilia....

@Berelinde - No problem. And, I wouldn't say it's derailing, since I think we've even all talked about this before! What Cullen does/doesn't know about your casting is rather pertinent to whether or not he throws you in the dungeon Gallows. I can understand wanting to be true to the story that way, and that mages should be casting. Cullen is a rule follower, but arguably not a slavish one [see pages of discussions of the whole mage surrender, RoA stuff]. He also has his own personal code of conduct, so I could potentially see him letting your casting slide since you did save his life, help him out, etc.

I was doodling some angsty modernized Cullen today. He's suffering from PTSD and lyrium addiction. And Dr. Amell is trying to help him by taking care of him when he's a total mess.

*glomps Stella* :o Of course I disappear right when you show up. Yes, Cullen will see the light; the bright, shining, magical light of love. One of these days hehe. Welcome back! <3

I've been sick. Blah. I'm taking antibiotics, so you don't have to worry about catching anything from me. It's safe to read my posts and all. :) (Migraines aren't contagious anyway!)

Avilia, I like Cullen with shades, but I think you broke my eyes on the 'Cullen with a moustache' thing. :pinched:

berelinde, I think Cullen is smart as a whip. He has reasons for keeping Hawke's secrets. What those reasons are, are obviously open for individual interpretation, but it seems pretty apparent to me. :bandit:

Gala, front page looks great! Are we going to add fan fiction links later on (since I have no art to contribute)?

*hugs* Antibiotics make me a little off, so if it was mean, my posts would a be little confusing... I couldn't write anything coherent for almost two weeks and kept just starting off into space... Good thing I wasn't working on MTA at the time.

Thanks for the hugs, love! Yeah, I'm not getting any writing done currently. I keep having to take naps from all the medication wooziness. C'est la vie! I hope to be back at it in a few days. ;-)

No problem. Hope you feel better soon, my dear. *sends Cullen over wearing only in apron and carrying a bowl of delicious potato soup (I prefer potatoes when I'm sick - I'll make potato soup out of instant mashed potatoes and hot chicken broth)*

This is when I wished I could draw better... shirt undone, package under one arm as he holds out the clipboard for you to sign for something you don't remember ordering... Cullen, you've invaded my daydreams...

I think I need to go play some more DAII...

Hmm... this discussion makes me think I might need a sick day, too. *cough*cough*sniffle*

@Bekk, get well soon!

@Gala, I second Avilia. I'd be very interested in reading more about cop!Cullen. Hubba. Seems he can rock any uniform.

@Avilia, there will be something. A bad fanfic at least :)
@Bekkael, yeah, I'll add the links from the group or a link to the group's page with the list of fanfiction. Because there a lot and sadly I can't feature them all on the front page. I wish we had spoilers or cuts in these forums! Get well soon!

Added the fanfiction. Many-many-many thanks and hugs to FenrisDeSolar for making the index in the fan-club. Sadly, I can't read much myself :( But I hope one day I will be reading fast enough to read them all! (I feel so illiterate >.<) And write synopses.
