Going back to Cullen a minute, I'm wondering if his story and romance arc could beat Alistair's (for me personally). I think I'd like it to be on par with Alistair's in terms of epicness and squee factor... but I don't think it would, which kinda sucks.

I would wager that, since they can't possibly spend the number of words on a Cullen romance as they did with Alistair, it will also pale in comparison. But that doesn't mean it can't be as sweet or moving.

That's something that makes me wonder how interaction with companions will be this time round, since they said that they're bringing back conversational investigative routes when talking to them.

I vaguely recall Mike Laidlaw saying at PAX that we will get to talk to them as much as we like, but it be wouldn't occur just anyway like it did in DA:O.

Would it be sort of like Awakening? Where you have to click on a certain thing to have a conversation with someone?

I think it would be somewhat like that but a bit different...Like not necassarily clicking on things and such..

What I'm imagining is that when we're running around between quests there will be "trigger spots" that'll pull us into a relevant conversation with certain companions (like Fenris during his first trip to the Gallows in DA2), then there will be "place/items of interest" (like in DA:A) where certain statues/views will trigger environment banter, maybe with a sweeping view of said environment (like in MotA). Then perhaps when we visit taverns and stuff we can talk to our companions at will because it's like a rest-up area. Whilst in active quests it'll probably be automatic "we should get on with the task at hand" dialogue like DA2 and when we're in the home hub it'll be no holds barred questioning the arse of the companions time.

... But then, Gaider said they're bringing back the option to kiss our LI wherever we want, which means we must be able to click on said companion DA:O style, in order to demand a kiss lol. So maybe when out and about we'll be restricted to certain interactions options, like: *Kiss* "What are your thoughts on this place?", "I'd like you to head back to base" etc.

I've actually been thinking about that a lot! Although for me it's Fenris. How can another BW romance affect me the way Hawke x Fenris did? What can compare? What if Cullen is in the game and he's a LI but the whole time I'm comparing the experience to my canon DA2 romance?

Sigh. I think what will help is that we will have a new protagonist. Your Warden is with Alistair and they're living happily ever after. My Hawke is with Fenris. They have their own life. Our new person will have Cullen.

All will be well ... assuming The Great and Powerful Gaider doesn't make us weep bitter, bitter tears

Yeah, I mean, with the Hawke in DA2 I wasn't so bothered because none of the LI's really grabbed my attention the way Alistair did, but i've been waiting for Cullen to be a romanceable companion for so long that if the romance/story arc for companions in DA3 is less/on par with the DA2 ones (in terms of lack of interaction etc) then I think I'm gonna be super disappointed.

I guess I'm kinda nervous about DA3 in general really.

I'm cautiously optimistic for DA3. It sounds like they're giving a little extra time and concentration so hopefully the story will grab me immediately like DA:O did. DA2 was fine for what it was and I had fun playing but I wasn't as immersed so the romances were a bit lackluster.... for me. I know there are many of you out there that completely disagree.

I have faith cause DA2 wasn't terrible, it could have been better, way better imo, but it was still very fun to play.

One of the big things I really worry about is how you begin a romance with someone. I don't want it to be DA2 where you click a heart option and its instant love, I kind of want it to go back to DA:O where you were guessing and failing and trying again. It made you kind of get to know the character's personality more (what they approve of, what they don't. How they handle affection, etc)

Yeah, that's a concern for me too. When I played DA:O last night it reminded me of how nicely paced out it was between the time you meet Alistair and the time you can finally start flirting with him. It felt more organic and interesting to get to know him a bit first and learn his personality traits before trying your luck, in the same way you would with people in real life.

In DA2 it was like you do one favour for them and they're up for flirting action lol.

Yeah! I loved how the Alistair romance felt so steady. Granted now that I have played enough I can get him to like me right away, but still lol.

I think it would feel kinda weird if Cullen's a romanceable companion and we can literally start flirting with him from the get go.

With my first ever DA:O playthrough, I didn't even realise he was a romanceable companion. Even when I started flirting I didn't think it would actually lead to anything. I can still recall when he first gave my Warden the rose and I was like WOAH AWESOME!

I like the idea of doing my first DA3 playthrough and not knowing when the options to flirt are going to kick in. I do believe that things will be paced out better this time though since it won't be a narrated story spanning across years and years.

I just really missed the anticipation of talking/interacting with my companions in DA2. For me some of the best parts of DA:O was when you'd check in with them and discover you could ask them new questions and learn more about them.

By late 2013 they will have been working on it for roughly 3 years, although they only got out of pre production in May last year according to an interview with Hepler. I dunno how games development works but they certainly seem to be getting things done at a rapid speed, especially given that DA3 is using a completely new engine.

Who did you guys romance in DA2? A lot of people talk about the"insta-romance" courtesy of the heart option in DA2, but this always has me scratching my head because it wasn't my experience. You could flirt with Fenris up through his Bitter Pill quest and his response would be to laugh awkwardly or try to change the subject. Even towards the end of Bitter Pill, Hawke tries to comfort him, and he's like, "HANDS OFF JERK!" *stomps away* lol

I did find that when romancing Anders he is basically panting to jump into bed with you by like the end of Act 1 lol I found that surprising but not unrealistic (guy's just really horny maybe lol) but then when he's saying, "I love you...!" in Act 2, I had to raise my eyebrows a bit. Really? Since when? Bit creepy, really LOL

Isabela's romance I thought was a little off with the pacing, too, but I haven't finished it yet.

Also haven't finished Alistair's romance. Of course the pacing is superb in DA:O because the game is longer and the dialogue trees are more intricate (I think). But this is only if you don't sit in camp and run through all the dialogue options and get his approval up to like 90% the first time you speak LOL

Zevran's was sweet and I think really well-done. He transitioned smoothly from, "Ohh, you're hot!" to "Don't be silly! Of course this is just sex! Hahahaha! No really!" to "Okay, you got me. I love you" lol

One thing I will say is I don't think Alistair fans can expect to relive that experience because DG did say he'd never make a LI that integral to/wrapped up in the plot. I didn't have a problem with it; even with Zev as my canon romance, it just felt like Alistair was my Warden's best friend. But yeah.

Oh, and also want to add, after moving from the heart option to the "which line should I pick?!?!" panic scenario that was DA:O, I definitely vastly preferred that stress-reducing heart option LOL

True. I think sometimes though that the objective of DA2 was to set the scene for a bigger game. "Ok, we have to ****** off the Qunari and start a mage rebellion. We'll throw in an Act 1 to give the protag a reason to be involved as a catalyst." If that were the case then one could say they've been working on it for a bit longer, in their heads anyway.

Just tossing around thoughts. It doesn't need to make sense. lol

I loved not knowing what to pick lol, that was part of the fun! Trial and error!

I mostly romance Anders and he's very keen, which is fine, but I think I would've liked to go to know him a bit first... I guess if we still had the option to chat to companions whenever (like we could in DA:O) then it would've paced out better. I always wished that there were more options for your choice of romantic response in DA2, often the things Hawke would say seemed unlikely that it would get a positive response from certain companions.

I know one of the devs said that they had DA3 originally planned as DA2, which they had worked out the basic plot for towards the end of DA:O. DA2 was made as a bridge between the two... probably because it would've been a bit jarring jumping from Blight to Mage/Templar rebellion.

Personality wise, I enjoyed Isabela's romance the most. I found Fenris' to be the most rewarding because it took so long to get there. To finally have him cave I was "Yeah! He trusts me!" but then "Wait... you're breaking up with me? WTF?". It was a bit annoying to have to wait for his final declaration of 'love'. Anders.... the first kiss was hot but he was way too self-involved for my taste. I know he had a goal. I know he had a parasitic thing happening with Justice. I just felt used.

PS - I liked not knowing what option to pick. I'm a big fan of "reload". lol The only problem I had with it was not knowing the tone of the comment. What I would take as sarcastic /snarky was often mistaken for anger and nastiness. Surely there must be a middle ground.
