That's a legitimate request. Even though I always romance Anders, I did mess around with the option and Hawke really comes across as a jerk if you don't want to enter into a romance with him. Most of the time when I read the forum though, the reactions are mostly less than optimal with people feel disgusted and make them feel "emasculated" or less manly because they were being hit by a man. It's hard to tell if the male gamers dislike it because you can't let Anders down easily or because they're homophobic.Danny Boy 7 wrote...

I felt like an uber d!ck for turning him down, outside of that awkward no thank you phase.
It was nice to see Isabela sort of sex up my Hawke though lol. "I'll even let you choose where I plant it" hurr hurr. Liked Fenris' flirt a little better though, kind of toned down and could be taken as anything. Knew it was a flirt, but it didn't make me feel like a douche for avoiding the subject.

Do the Suicide mission as soon you've got Legion loyal otherwise your crew will die.
Many thanks, I have written all this down.
I am going to make a helluva load of saves just in case! I think some planning will be needed!
Oh, make sure you have a high paragon or renegade rating when Tali and Legion/ Jack and Miranda argue otherwise you'll have to pick a side and loose one of their loyalty bonuses (which means one of them will die during the suicide mission or ME3).

I really liked that some of the LI's will try to flirt with Hawke first, but I just wish it wasn't so soon into the game. Literally, you'd do their quest and they'd be like "how you doin'" and I'm like "slow down their dear, tell me about yourself!"
I felt DA:O was better paced for that, since (with the exception of Zev) you'd have to get to know the companions a little first before you got to the stage where you could start flirting with them.

I wonder if DA3 will take a leaf out of Mass Effects book and have us pick between two companions to save/go with? You know you've totally just set up a siding with the mages or templars and losing either Cullen or an as yet unknown mage companion scenario.

I think because of the way the story is scripted, it's a lot harder since DA2 is more linear in its progression, most of the cutscenes are set in stone while in DAO, you can do things at your own pace. I hope if they had companion initiating relationship, I do hope they're more flesh out and Hawke doesn't just hit on everyone during their first meeting.LolaLei wrote...

LOL I think you might be right! Although, we always need at least one mage in our party (usually a healer) so it'll probably be the non-healer mage that we'd have to pick between. I'd pick Cullen lol.

Yeah, that kind of shocked me in ME, having to make that moral choice. Felt bad for Ashley.
If we had that choice to make, I would prefer it earlier on in the game too. I mean losing Sebastian at the end of one of my DA2 playthroughs (lovely as he is) was a no brainer as I knew that Anders would be more useful to me at the end of the game (he is a good healer).

Yeah, I think it would be cool if once the friendship bar is at a certain level the flirt options appear, but this time (if you've shown interest) then the companion will sometimes made an off the cuff flirty remark themselves without being prompted by the protagonist.

It felt like my Hawke was sexy to EVERYONE...except Aveline *sniff* so I didn't feel disgusted. Sadly just as many people are gonna be homophobic as those that just want to come off less dickish. Sometimes it's compounded by his loss of humour and when they talk they add in, "And he was gay!" when what they meant was, "With so much different I didn't like that on top of that I had to be a total douche to keep him from flirting with me. Not because I mind having a man flirt with me, but because no means no!" which can still be rather homophobic but I think less than half are intentionally mean and just don't know how to express themselves properly.
I'd say some woman do the same with lesbian characters, I mean Morrigan sort of mirrors how some lady gamers I have met feel when Leliana does it, though they're less inflammatory about it.
I know when I first came in here the biggest thing I wanted was for there to be six LI's, two per orientation, but it came off as mean, which isn't what I intended. I just wanted equal representation. Why should I as a straight male player not be equally barred from relationships (like with Samantha Traynor) than someone who can't romance Alistair as a man or Morrigan as a woman?

Kinda, but just flirting at first. Sorta like how Anders makes a flirty comment to Hawke after his quest, except it wouldn't happen until a bit later in the game when the friendship bar was high enough.
I'd love for companions to be able to give the protagonist presents again though, I missed that sentiment in DA2 and was kinda pissed off when Anders offered his mothers pillow to Varric instead of Hawke, given how much trouble he/she goes through to keep Anders safe.

I do prefer a bit of a slow burner re romances, so I agree with you. I hope that the protagonist can also give gifts too (to raise approval or rivalry). Hopefully it would stop some members of the party leaving (I hate it when they leave :-(

Yeah but it fit with Zev and Izzy. I agree though that since their conversations are so set in their progression that the pacing comes off as a bit rushed.
Anders: Hurr hurr hey there *wiggly eyebrows*
Hawke: Um didn't you kill your lover not three minutes ago/ a day or two ago?

So maybe to romance Cullen you have to get him to like fifty percent, but for someone like Isabela or Dorian it's much lower like fifteen or even ten percent.
To make that even better make it so that when you flirt, sometimes it's the wrong answer. In SWTOR sometimes when you flirt with your LI you'll lose approval because they want to be serious, they feel like they are being used, or just don't feel like it. So adding that layer of failure will make them even better imo.

Yeah, but early on in the game rather than right at the end lol.
I think the Virmire quest (if done near the end but not during the finale) was perfect for timing wise. It's not right before the final battle, but it's not during it either. Alistair and Loghains was a bit late though imo since you only had a single level of barrier between the two events to get to know Loghain so idk.
Ideally it would be between people you potentially both like, but you can plan for player reaction.

The protagonist and Cullen are talking about his life in the Templar order. When it's your turn to speak the dialogue options pop up. Instead of picking from the regular non-flirting options, you decide to try your luck. Your protagonist now has three options:
Cullen: "I served under Knight Commander Meredith in Kirkwall until she went crazy. Eventually her madness consumed her. I risked my life and job to aid the Champion in slaying her..."
Protagonist:
<3: "I wouldn't mind serving under you myself" *wink wink nudge nudge*
<3: "That's all very interesting, but let's skip to the part where you tell me that you're single"
<3: "You're a good man Cullen, I'm glad you came to no harm"
The first option would probably freak him out a bit because it's too forward and pushy for the first stages of flirting, which would (in theory) earn you disapproval points (but a hilarious stuttered response).
The second option would likely offend him because he was trying to tell you about his history and trusts you enough to reveal difficult information about himself, yet he'd presume that you're clearly not interest in getting to know him beyond "I wanna get in your pants". This would also earn you disapproval points, but slightly less than the first option.
The third option would be the optimal choice because it's subtle and rather sweet. He'd appreciate your concern for his safety and as such warm to you a little more. This would earn you approval points.
Something like that in DA3 would be kinda cool because even though we'd still know what pieces of dialogue were the flirty lines, we'd still have to use our knowledge about the companion to work out which line they'd approve of and what approach works best.

I'm hoping we'll get different romantic dialogue options everytime we do use flirt options. Like, maybe two or three different "flirt" choices that you'd have to choose from in order to achieve the desired effect on your potential LI. For example:

That's something else that I missed in DA2, consequences for flirting/sleeping with other companions. This one time my Hawke had been shagging Isabela and then later Anders turned up for some one-on-one action (or should that be two-in-one including Justice?) Anyway, he then asked if things had ended between Hawke and Isabela, so I decided to use the lie option to see what would happen... Anders moved in and I was thinking "fireworks!" ... But nothing happened. Anders never called me out on my lie, Isabela never came back for another shag to find Anders sleeping in Hawke's bed. Absolutely nothing.
I was terribly disappointed LOL!

(At least they'll have something to talk about whilst they're suck together after being kidnapped or whatever!)

P.S. I left a review of the fanfic...I left my true feelings...you have been warned
LOL thanks for the review... I didn't even know it was possible to cringe in a good way? What parts made you cringe?
Well it's those moments that you're like embarrased for someone, but because you know you'd probably do the same if you were in a similar situation. I once had the biggest crush on someone but we couldn't be together because she was involved with someone else and I threw a fit when I got back home, threw my gloves and stuff. So I can understand her frustration, but thinking back on it, twas a bit silly to not just tell her how I felt, consequences be damned lol.
I'm also a bit of a romantic, but sometimes I like it to be a little more muted know what I mean? Might be the stupid guy in me though lol. I like to think love is something that doesn't always need to be verbalized, or can sort of skirted around. Show rather than tell in this regard. Sort of how in Isabela's romance you get friendship points if you ask her about love and encourage that, but she says that she was just around for a "toss" (I believe is the english euphemism
But overall it was an enjoyable read.
