My thoughts about why we can't be Amell is that we will be some other family. Similar to Hawke being "HAWKE" (and AMELL) so Hawke couldn't have been, say, Cousland.

If we have diff backgrounds, I hope that also includes not being from the same fam in each one.

Altho, I don;t how they'd implement a surname then. And I can't see us being called Inquisitor all the time.

That's what makes me think we'll only have the one Surname, otherwise it'll double the workload getting the companion and npc VOs to repeat the same lines with different surnames, which would probably cost extra money that would be better spent elsewhere (like on Cullen!)

Well we could still have a set family name but have a variety of different backgrounds... maybe we were sent to the Circle, or we joined the templars, or became a thief, or ran away to Orlais... whatever, you know?

Agreed. It would kinda be like mini alternate universes, in which our protagonist's past is decidely different each time. Like Shepard and his/her background options.

So long as I have some variety of options, I'll be content. I haven't delved into the ME universe, so I have no context there. I would just prefer to choose more than gender / rogue, mage or warrior.

I only played ME3 but didn't see how those various "choices" actually affected the story. I'm sure it affected !&2 a lot more.

Yeah gimme something more than gender and class since you took away race *sobbu* ... gimme a background that rears its head consistently throughout the game.

An interesting post by Gaider in the romance options thread:

"LobselVith8 wrote...
I think that would be good enough for me. I think companions should be optional.

As always, some companions will be optional and some will not.

I doubt pro-templar or pro-Chantry companions would follow someone who went against their ethical and moral views, and vice versa.

I'd warn against leaping to conclusions about the context of what you will and will not be doing, and how potential companions might or might not be associating with you. It won't stop you, as it never has, but you're undoubtedly building yourself up to disappointment."

Soooo a pro-templar/pro-chantry companion will indeed work with a pro-mage protagonist. I guess for the greater good/based on your characters actions and attitude towards said companions.

How could all companions be optional? I think it adds interest to the story as a whole if you've got some kind of conflict going on. Otherwise it's dull, no?

:D I always suspected that would be the case. Especially since I saw DG comment earlier that TO HIM it made sense that Fenris wouldn't care if Hawke supported slavery or not. That surprised me at first, but then I thought, why should he be surprised by how is own character reacts...

So I don't think they are in the business of creating characters with ulimatums, i.e. "I will only follow you if you meet such-and-such criteria."

Which to some degree is disappointing because I honestly would want Cullen to step away if the protagonist used blood magic...

Agreed. I think ultimately the companions attitude towards you depends on how rude you are to them and your subsquent actions, rather than who he/she is affilated with.

Fenris was always a bit of a strange one, but it didn't directly effect him so he had no real reason to leave Hawke even if he/she did support slavery.

That's what I got to thinking; DG saying that about Fenris made me think pretty deeply about his character (being the FenNerd that I am), and it started to make sense. He is the type of person who has put up with so much sh!t in his life that he's sort of become conditioned to just dealing with it. I think he also immediately puts people in a category of "I don't care about him/her; I just need him/her for this or that" and that's why he is surprised if he some day find himself respecting that person. But if he never grows to respect Hawke, he's totally fine with it, because they both got what they needed.

I hope that small things like that will help us understand Cullen better. Sometimes I feel like we speculate so much about him that we are building up a character who doesn't exist (I know we all probably feel that way sometimes lol). But it's hard to be so excited about him possibly being a companion and LI and to NOT speculate. I mean just romancing Vilkas in Skyrim (and you know how ridiculously simple "romance" is in Skyrim) made me think about Cullen and start to speculate what his romance will be like *rolls eyes*

Okay no more essay-length replies tonight.

You know, I read this a bit differently. "I'd warn against leaping to conclusions about the context of what you will and will not be doing" This suggests to  me that the way way the quoted statement was phrased may even be wrong -- i.e. maybe thinking about who's pro-templar and pro-Chantry is the wrong way to think about it. We're all so focused on the Mage-Templar war and so we assign everyone a faction, but maybe those factions won't even mean anything for our followers.

That certainly adds to the theory that the mage/templar war is just a red herring for the real "big bad" in which fractions won't matter anymore because we all have to band together to save Thedas or whatever.

OHHH Now that is intriguing! Maybe the situation is such that someone like Cullen and Cassandra have worse things to worry about than "mages bad, templars good!" lol

Oh, we invariably do this. Without a doubt. We've created aspects of his character that his writers  probably  have never even discussed, let alone fleshed out. If they have added him as a companion, then at least *someone* might finally know the answers to some of the things we discuss. Here's hoping!

Lol yeah, we've definitely gone into over drive with the Cullen speculation. He's an inspiring character, as such we speculate and then draw more inspiration from our inital theories and head canons LOL. I don't think it's a bad thing, so long as we keep in mind that it is just hypotheticals.
