An interesting post by Gaider in the romance options thread:

"LobselVith8 wrote...
I think that would be good enough for me. I think companions should be optional.

As always, some companions will be optional and some will not.

I doubt pro-templar or pro-Chantry companions would follow someone who went against their ethical and moral views, and vice versa.

I'd warn against leaping to conclusions about the context of what you will and will not be doing, and how potential companions might or might not be associating with you. It won't stop you, as it never has, but you're undoubtedly building yourself up to disappointment."

Soooo a pro-templar/pro-chantry companion will indeed work with a pro-mage protagonist. I guess for the greater good/based on your characters actions and attitude towards said companions.

You know, I read this a bit differently. "I'd warn against leaping to conclusions about the context of what you will and will not be doing" This suggests to  me that the way way the quoted statement was phrased may even be wrong -- i.e. maybe thinking about who's pro-templar and pro-Chantry is the wrong way to think about it. We're all so focused on the Mage-Templar war and so we assign everyone a faction, but maybe those factions won't even mean anything for our followers.

That certainly adds to the theory that the mage/templar war is just a red herring for the real "big bad" in which fractions won't matter anymore because we all have to band together to save Thedas or whatever.

OH I wish my blog were out. At any rate I think the Mage-Templar War is only really going to be...background? It's gonna be that thing that adds a bit of urgency to the plot like the Blight did in Origins or getting caught by the templars in Dragon Age 2 but if you really look at both of those plots it wasn't until the end where we have direct impact of those two things. Up until then we've been looking for ways to aid us in their completion or at the very least to better our chances at completing our objectivies.

Really our main focus was the Treaty Plot and Ferelden Civil War in Origins and in DA2 we were trying to stay out of prison/the Gallows even as a Warrior or Rogue so we tried to reearn our estate in the first act and then gain favor with the Viscount in Act 2.

At any rate I think what's gonna take precendence is the Inquisition plot (whatever that is) and the Orlesian Civil War plot.

LOL, my thoughts exactly.

So whats been going on today, guys?

DG said the protagonist cannot be an Amell. His choice of words was intriguing.

So under what circumstances would you use "cannot." You cannot be an Amell because...

- You're Orlesian? Tevintan? or some other non-Fereldan, non-Marcher descent?
- You're related to ... someone else we somehow know isn't related to the Amells...? Couslands? Mac Tirs? erm... someone elven...?
- You're someone who's never ever had magic in your family for some "reason"?

I'd imagine the first two are the most likely. We might just not be Ferelden/a Marcher or have a family with strong ties to a country the Amell's aren't. Maybe we're a Vael? :P

Aww, that is sad! (super adorable too) Yet again, brings about the question if given the choice between the two, who would you pick? I think I would have to keep my mage playthroughs for Cullen, then throw everyone else to Alistair.

It's funny how w/ each game, I have a well defined "favorite" romance. Alistair for Origins, Anders for II. I wonder if this time around, I'll really be torn between choosing, I hope so!

@Danny ~ Isn't the "Inquisition plot" trying to find out what exactly going on w/ the magical side of things? Here's the German Translation from the leaked survery (if it's true of course)

"A portal between the worlds unleashes hords of demons in the land, civil wars rip apart nations and the corruption is limitless. Someone is behind the shadows, drawing the threads which destroy the world. Time has come for the Inquisition."

I hope the Orlesian civil war plot isn't one of the most important, it would kinda render DA2 pointless with it's Mage/Templar rebellion set up lol.

Yeah the same for me with romances, Morrigan for Origins, Isabela for II. I'm hoping I'm torn as well, but idk maybe I'm just attracted to strong afraid of love women lol.

Well the Inquisition plot is either supposed to be about finding out who bombed/destroyed the Chantry or as you said discovering who is behind the manipulation of the world. Either way we'll likely not be taking direct part in the war, because that would require us to choose a side. which I doubt is their plans. We'll show our support through our actions but we won't be fighting the actual war for anyone. In my opinion.

Our main focus/what we'll be doing to end the war is searching for who is behind stopping the peace talks. The ultimate outcome of the war I think will be our choice, but for the most part we'll be focused on the investigation as well as any tertiary plots like the Orlesian Civil War or whatever. The Inquisition/OCW will likely be what we'll be playing through, but it's all a means to ending the Mage-Templar War see what I mean?

Well what I meant was that it would probably either serve as something like the Orzammar quests in Origins or if Orlais is our only setting then it's gonna be like the whole thing with Loghain in Origins. Choosing a new emperor or keeping Empress Celene on the throne. Maybe she needs a husband hmmm

Agreed. I think the Civil War and Mage/Templar conflict will be handled a lot like the Qunari plot in DA II, where it's a major event that shapes certain paths of our protagonist, but is not the driving force behind what our character will be inquiring after (inquisition-ing? :P)

No doubt we will at some point have to pick a side, and possibly have to fight for them to gain thier aid (ala the treaties in Origins) I think that's where "commanding our armies" and deciding to be confrontational and upfront, or political and sneaky, will come into play. For example, we pick a side for the Orlesian conflict, fight and aid them, and those soldiers/allies will be ours when it comes to our main goal, of discovering who is trying to break apart Thedas and defeating them.

So uh...just came across something in Act II, was curious if it has been addressed.

I'm in the Gallows, Anders in my party, when I confront Cullen about the "Tranquil Solution" that one templar was trying to push through. Anders snaps at Cullen, and Cullen outright calls Anders a mage, like it's no big deal.....

Wha??? I love Cullen with all my heart, but wow, he is a really ****ty Templar.
