I was just in the DA3 forum and there's a thread called "family" and it got me thinking. How would everyone feel about having a permanent companion that wasn't actually related to the protagonist, but had known him/her for so long that they consider each other has family?

Like, perhaps he/she isn't romanceable because you consider them like a brother/sister. Then maybe something sh!tty happens to them mid-way through and on their death bed they declare their love for you *cough* Tamlen *cough*.

I like that... hey! Are we having one of those, we've discussed it before, but forgot, so are discussing it again, moments? Didn't we have a discussion about the Inquisitor starting out DA3 with a childhood friend who had unrequited feelins for the PC?  Or am I hallucinating again...?

Yeah, except he/she dies right at the beginning! This one would survive the whole game, or at least until mid-point. And possibly isn't in love with the protagonist lol.

Or maybe he/she actually ends up screwing the protagonist over? Ultimate backstab!

I like it. I only slipped into the family thread very  briefly, but I didn't stay because I'd like to do something different from the family thing this time. Family was a big part of DA2, so something different like a lifelong friend that can fill in your backstory when needed would be cool. I also like the unrequited love thing. Heh. Which could make this individual very  protective of you from the start with whoever you choose as your LI. Of course, the love thing might require two sexes for the friend (?)  given some folks concerns, but then... was Tamlen also in love with you if you were a guy Warden? I'd love for it not to matter.

Ok how about this:

You start off the game with two friends with you (one male and one female), you get to know them a bit first by chatting to them etc, you can flirt with both regardless of your gender (if you want) so you can decide which one you like the most. During the blast both get injured, but you can only save one (presumably your favourite).

You go through the game with the one you saved. HOWEVER, you can't romance them. As you get to know him/her you discover that the character is actually rather jealous, childish and annoying and reacts badly to whoever you decide to romance. Due to his/her jealousy (if you romance someone) or just stupid childish nature (if you don't romance anyone) he/she ends up putting you and the group in a lot of danger by screwing you over by siding with the "bad guys", not realising that the bad guys intend to kill the protagonist and the group. Eventually your friend gets killed and declares his/her love for the protagonist (if you originally flirted) as he/she dies.

The choosing part is interesting (like Kaidan and Ashley?)... instead of it being chosen for you (sorta like Carver and Beth). Why do I keep thinking of Imoen?? LOL

In case anyone else is interested, I found the following on diamondback and wicked grace.

http://cherith.tumbl...age-diamondback

http://lotusflwr.tum...519/wickedgrace

Of course, I've also been reminded that Wicked Grace is what Isabela plays with you in DA:O. So, like I think littlenikki said, Wicked Grace might be a bit more like Blackjack, and Diamondback more like poker. The link above suggests the latter was based on another game, with similar hands and betting like poker.

NO. <_< He was not. At least not canonically. In my game though? They were totally shacking up. TOTALLY.

It makes that final scene with corrupted!Tamlen so much more moving :crying:

Yeah, I kinda wish that we had been given the choice of which character to save in DA2 so that Hawke's mum was kinda justified in accusing you of letting the other sibling die and adding another layer to Hawke's personality as he/she deals with the guilt of letting one die over the other.

But family members and childhood friends ALWAYS have to die in BioWare games! (It's the law!) <_<

LOL! I just had a daft idea.

Imagine if we ran into Varric in DA3 and he told us that Hawke was just a made up name he gave himself to deal with the scum of Kirkwall without attracting attention to himself. And that Fenris, Isabela, Anders, Sebastian, Bethany/Carver, Merrill and Tallis were just the names of his weapons he used to defeat all the bad guys. I'd ****** my pants, seriously! The fact that it would be an obvious bare faced lie would be even funnier.

Rats. Like how Cullen only had a crush on the female Warden. Oh well.

It would be bold to let such a lifelong friend be a dude and regardless, he fesses up at the end that he  loved you. Of course, I suppose folks would rage that the friend 'didn't seem gay" blah blah if  you don't find out until the end and your PC is male.  "A bold move. At least, I thought so."

I think it would be really sweet that regardless of the companions gender and the protagonists gender, the life long friend is in love with you. Or better still, the life long friend is ONLY in love with you if your protagonist is of the same sex. Which would make more sense really. He/she never told the protagonist how he/she felt because he/she was unsure of whether you swung that way! <3

And then obviously if the protagonist did swing that way (by romancing a same sex companion) then the life long friend would mention that he/she wishes they'd told you sooner about how they felt... not that it would've meant your protagonist would've even be interested (that would be down to your head canon), but ya know what I mean.

It's funny how people think they will be "forced" to like Cullen. Um, since when have we been forced to like a character? Plenty of people hate Morrigan, Leliana, Fenris, etc. Nobody forces you to like or hate anyone lol

People use "forced" whenever the game gives them something they can't control and turn out not liking it. To me every companion is avoidable. You don't NEED to talk to them, it's just for one reason or another you choose to.

I also somewhat think it's Bieber syndrome. People "hate" Cullen and since it's "seems" like most people hate him or at the very least they're the most vocal. Some of these people may legitimately hate him for one reason or another. Maybe they abhor the "idea" that he let rapes happen, maybe they just REALLY don't like templars. But more than anything I just think the Hate went viral.

Definitely, I think a lot of it is pack mentality.

I mean, I'd love to know where this "Cullen influx" is supposed to be happening, in which all the fangirls are forcing people to like him. As far as I'm aware this is the only place where his fans are active and I know for a fact we barely come out of this thread and we certainly don't try to convert people to the cult LOL.

Ohhh good comparison to Bieber. I never understood how grown men and women could profess for some little kid pop singer!! It's weird lol

I can also honestly say I've never hated a character.. wait, does Jar Jar Binks count? :P

It'd be cool if they were a sort of pseudo romance. You sort of pine for him/her throughout the entire game, but because they're not a romance it doesn't go anywhere. You don't romance anyone else and then when he/she dies you can share one heartfelt kiss.

I think the real problem is that a lot of them don't really "hate" Cullen (excluding those who hate Templars etc), but rather they hate his fandom.

Bwahahaha!! I have to share one of the comments on that confession. This is my new favorite name for the game... I feel a new banner coming on...

gamerchicksworld said: This! The game is NOT already out and the fans already have a freaking shrine of him. The game is NOT Cullen Age: The Loving of Cullen. Its so annoying

I'd really like to know who these "fans" are, cause I know it's not us. They're acting like we go around to every thread and starting preaching the Cult of Cullen. We keep our fangirling in here, where it is appropriate, and we're not even annoying about it! Gahhh....I hate the generalization of this fandom.

*Hides preaching robes and tattered manifesto written on the back of an old receipt*

They hate him because he has a passionate fanbase, which is popular to hate on. And since it's been awhile since I've posted any RDJ gifs

That would be sweet! And gutting. I like it!

What if perhaps you start off the game already in a romance with someone. For example, you have a temp companion and based on your decisions from the outset (maybe in the background options or through interaction with the companion) you can decide if you're just friends with said person, or in a relationship with them. Eventually you get separated from him/her and it's presumed that he/she is dead. So then obviously you meet all the new companions and start romancing one of them (if you want) , but later in the game you recieve a letter with no name signed from someone wanting to meet with you urgently and on your arrival you discover that it's your old flame who's tracked you down, he/she also knows about your new romance (if you have one) and it throws a spanner into the works, he/she also needs your help with something. You then have to do a quest for them and if you bring your LI along it makes things even more awkward. Finally you have to decide what to do about your previous love interest and whether or not to break things off with your current LI etc.

People hate what's popular...what's more they hate people who like what's popular....even if said thing isn't popular so much as well liked among a small group of people. Honestly I know exactly what's going to happen even if he's an AMAZING character.

1. We'll be happy, he lived up to our expectations and maybe even exceeded them.
2. The haters who were just following the trend will either be like "He's just what I imagined :D :D :D" or "He's a horrible character, these people are blind!!!"
3. The real haters won't change they're opinion regardless of whether he's the most epic companion of all time before or after. I mean I've heard, "Doesn't matter what they do, he's a stoopid character....etc."
4. And the indifferents will be swayed to one side or the other.

Tis the sad truth of things.

You mean sort of like Fable 3? I mean who says we need to have said character as a companion right away? Nadia Grell is a companion in SWTOR for the Jedi Consular and she's basically with you the ENTIRE game before she actually becomes a companion.

They romance you in your background and then "die" but before the end of the game maybe a third of the way in, shortly past when romances are available you get the letter you talked about and then it flows that way :D
