And then obviously if the protagonist did swing that way (by romancing a same sex companion) then the life long friend would mention that he/she wishes they'd told you sooner about how they felt... not that it would've meant your protagonist would've even be interested (that would be down to your head canon), but ya know what I mean.

It'd be cool if they were a sort of pseudo romance. You sort of pine for him/her throughout the entire game, but because they're not a romance it doesn't go anywhere. You don't romance anyone else and then when he/she dies you can share one heartfelt kiss.

That would be sweet! And gutting. I like it!

What if perhaps you start off the game already in a romance with someone. For example, you have a temp companion and based on your decisions from the outset (maybe in the background options or through interaction with the companion) you can decide if you're just friends with said person, or in a relationship with them. Eventually you get separated from him/her and it's presumed that he/she is dead. So then obviously you meet all the new companions and start romancing one of them (if you want) , but later in the game you recieve a letter with no name signed from someone wanting to meet with you urgently and on your arrival you discover that it's your old flame who's tracked you down, he/she also knows about your new romance (if you have one) and it throws a spanner into the works, he/she also needs your help with something. You then have to do a quest for them and if you bring your LI along it makes things even more awkward. Finally you have to decide what to do about your previous love interest and whether or not to break things off with your current LI etc.

You mean sort of like Fable 3? I mean who says we need to have said character as a companion right away? Nadia Grell is a companion in SWTOR for the Jedi Consular and she's basically with you the ENTIRE game before she actually becomes a companion.

They romance you in your background and then "die" but before the end of the game maybe a third of the way in, shortly past when romances are available you get the letter you talked about and then it flows that way :D

Yeah just like that! Like maybe before we become the Inquisitor he/she does a couple of small quests with you and if you do decide that you're in a romance with him/her (either via conversation or in the background option) then he/she would refer to you as love or say the odd cute thing to you during said quests etc. (Kinda like how Aveline and Wesley are together in the DA2 opening) and then the "big bad" thing happens, which is where you get separated, both of you presume the other is dead and then you're assigned as the Inquisitor and the real story begins. Of course, your lover discovers you're still alive and now the Inquisitor so he/she is trying to contact you, which is when you finally get the letter around midway into the game.

I think the real problem is that a lot of them don't really "hate" Cullen (excluding those who hate Templars etc), but rather they hate his fandom.

People hate what's popular...what's more they hate people who like what's popular....even if said thing isn't popular so much as well liked among a small group of people. Honestly I know exactly what's going to happen even if he's an AMAZING character.

1. We'll be happy, he lived up to our expectations and maybe even exceeded them.
2. The haters who were just following the trend will either be like "He's just what I imagined :D :D :D" or "He's a horrible character, these people are blind!!!"
3. The real haters won't change they're opinion regardless of whether he's the most epic companion of all time before or after. I mean I've heard, "Doesn't matter what they do, he's a stoopid character....etc."
4. And the indifferents will be swayed to one side or the other.

Tis the sad truth of things.

You forgot the outcries of "pandering" and "favoritism" that will erupt across the entire BSN

I sort of grouped that into two and three respectively.

Y'know what? If they're going to pander to and show favouritism towards anyone, then I don't see why it shouldn't be towards groups of fans like us. We (and others) have been nothing but polite and respectful to the DA team, why the hell would they wanna do anything for the "fans" who insult and belittle them on a regular basis.

Gahh ... well it really depends on if they have some serious chemistry. Like seriously, if Tamlen had reappeared as a romance-able companion towards the end of DA:O, my Warden would have dropped poor Zevran like a hot potato LOL

But I just really love Tamlen. (My Skyrim elf is named Tamlen.) So I don't know if that's particular character or the situation in general. Though generally, I think it would be sweet if your PC's long lost love shows up midway through. Would I drop Cullen for him/her? If it really, really felt right... sure.

But then let's not forget I'll be doing 10 more playthroughs after this initial one so one or more of those PC's can have Cullen for keeps xD

Definitely. Some people just want to watch the world burn when they have happiness around them.

I've been thinking some more about the castle that we "may or may not acquire" in DA3.

In DA:O the characters placement inside Eamon's estate before the final onslaught was kinda... odd! (Morrigan, Sten and Dog all in my Warden's bedroom) more than a little bit weird! So I was thinking that maybe this time round the companions placement within the castle or home hub could be done more relevantly.

Imagine the following:

We're in our castle, inside there are several rooms on different floors that open up as we acquire more companions and npcs etc. Each companion can be found in a room that's specific to his/her personality. For example, we have a companion who's heavily interested in lore and history, he/she can be found in the castle library reading. Cassandra then joins the party, being a natural leader, she can be found in the armory checking the weapons and equipment, despite not needing to (since that's our job). Cullen joins the team, he's used to a strict training regime since he's spent most of his life in the Templar order, he can be found training in the courtyard (or whatever those rooms are called where you practice fighting). You acquire a drunken companion, he/she can be found in the wine cellar LOL! Aaaand so on. Of course, they'd move around the castle and interact with the other companions and npcs too, but their main "area" would be which ever room suits their personality best. And once you've successfully romanced a companion, they move into your bedroom at night LOL!

I LOOOVE this~! In addition to having "special" rooms that they frequent (the library, the armory, etc.), each character has his/her own bedroom, too, that they sometimes retire to. Also I loved that aspect of ME3, how you would go to look for James but he's not there; turns out he's up a level shooting the sh!t with Garrus or something. That was really cool!

Also I'd love it if the characters were having a conversation/argument, and your PC could but in somehow!

also love this. Would be so cool to see them alive in that way, instead of  being at your beck and call.

Yeah, I could imagine going to check on Cassandra and realising she's not there, you check the map and notice that she's in the courtyard with Cullen, straight away you think "oh god it's another Fenris/Isabela moment!" So you sprint out to the courtyard to find them having a heated debate about the Templar/Seeker hierarchy LOL!

I'm totally expecting Cullen and Cassandra to have the kind of relationship in which they argue and insult each other all the way through the game, only to walk in on them having a make out session right at the end of the game before the final onslaught. I'd flip my **** LOL!

Just saw that on Tumblr. I'm surprised no one accused the person who insulted them as being a butt hurt Cullen fangirl.

Holy crap! Talk about vicious! Who does that? Really..Who. Does. That? That is.....wow.....really? Really? How old are they, a preteen who has finally learned how to curse, or perhaps used 'big' adult words? Seriously. My goodness. Some people.

And that's the exact moment when I open up the Dragon Age Wiki to find out when and where I am able to kill Cassandra

LMFAO! I'd be alright with it if I wasn't romancing either of them (ok, maybe I'd be a little miffed). However, I'd be so gutted if he was unromanceable throughout the whole thing, only to catch him and Cassandra or some other companion/NPC all over each other in one of the rooms in my castle. I'd kick them both out into the snow... Naked. Then shot arrows at them.

Pfftt, I would just get upset if Cullen was unromanceable and he and Cassandra had a thing. I would curl in a corner and tell myself that it wasn't real and it didn't happen. And if a banter about it happens, it will be good time to sneeze or cough, reallllllyyy loud.

The drama today on daconfessions plus related haters gonna hate reminds me of why I spent close to 6 months lurking in this fandom before saying anything that wasn't in a private space (like friends locked posts on LJ/DW). Of course, after my first PT of DA:O, my two favorite characters ended up being Cullen and Anora rather than one of the uber popular characters so all I saw was the nasty Cullen hate and "Anora is a ****" hate and ... yeah. Just backed right away from all of it.

In all fairness, I think there is a lot of confusion over the reasons why someone might like a character and a lot of flip assumptions that people only like characters if they are physically attractive or express interest in your PC.

For instance, I've received messages on tumblr thanking me for writing about why Cullen's struggles throughout DA:O and DA2 are interesting in their own right as a struggle of a person against an institution, and some of those thank yous also said that it was really nice to read an exploration of Cullen's characterization that never touches on "oh, and he's really hot."

At another level, I think there is a lot of confusion over liking a character for the struggle they go through versus thinking that if a fan likes a character they clearly support everything that character does.

So much of what I like about Cullen is how flawed he is and what a mess he is in the middle of: how he seems in over his head most of the time in DA:O and DA2, how **inappropriate** it is for him to be interested in fem!Surana or fem!Amell, how he chooses to support a problematic system, and how he is probably aware of abuses at the Gallows. None of that means I support any of those things, which a simplistic accuser in fandom might think.

Instead, I find it interesting to think about why people get caught up in institutionalized thinking and how it creates moral conflicts that they must eventually face.

And if that isn't someone's tastes, that's fine. There is a whole lot else they can go fan about in Thedas.

Thus, I stay in the parts of fandom that interest me and I encourage everyone else to go to the parts of fandom that interest them. Everyone should be happy then. The end. >_<

Kinda like what they did with ME3 where companions moved around the Normandy and interacted. Gaider already said we could probably expect something similar, so I could see this happening. Really, I'm hoping Frostbite itself just makes the entire world feel more organic. It's really weird playing Bioware games and seeing NPCs just stand in one place for 10 years...

As for Cullen+Cassandra being rivals, I could see that. Bioware has it in every game they do where you get rivalry banter. DAO was Alistair+Morrigan and DA2 was Aveline+Isabela.

Love the castle idea with companions moving around.

Have been predicting a strong Cullen vs Cassandra rivalry for months with the hopes that it gets physical, but not in a romantic manner

It might be an Internal Affairs vs. Normal Cops type deal or they could be fighting over who's fault it is for the seperation from the Chantry.
