Well, I didn't know for sure if it was some divine explanation for the Ashes. What I do know is that regardless how truly divine a religious symbol is, people will still try to use that for their own selfish agenda.
Draw parallels to our own world. In history, we've had several important figures claim they held the true Spear of Destiny from Christianity. Napoleon and Hitler were some, just to name a few. It was said anyone who held that spear had divine powers. What did every important figure in history that claimed to hold that symbol have in common? They controlled massive armies that ended up being conquerors.
It's not so much whether the Spear of Destiny truly holds some kind of special power, the real power is that people believe it can do it. Weak minds are easily swayed. That's the real danger. So you see the dilemma I went through in DAO? That's why I love Bioware games because they make me think like that. Well, at least that was my personal interpretation of the Sacred Ashes.
It's like the triforce situation all over again!

I think the real problem is that a lot of them don't really "hate" Cullen (excluding those who hate Templars etc), but rather they hate his fandom.
People hate what's popular...what's more they hate people who like what's popular....even if said thing isn't popular so much as well liked among a small group of people. Honestly I know exactly what's going to happen even if he's an AMAZING character.
1. We'll be happy, he lived up to our expectations and maybe even exceeded them.
2. The haters who were just following the trend will either be like "He's just what I imagined

4. And the indifferents will be swayed to one side or the other.
