What strikes me as odd is that DG didn't know he had a last name, meaning, DG, who invented the naming system (assuming), didn't plan on him being a major character. Someone else named him. So does this suggest Cullen will not be a major character in DA3?
Depends on whoever is writing him I guess. I think it definitely points to the fact that Cullen isn't a character that "belongs" to him.
Yeah, okay. Aww and that would suggest that he has some real fans in the Writer's Pit who have lobbied to make him more important to the story!!
My theory is that whoever has wrote him (be it as just a npc/cameo or companion/LI) decided to give him a second name (for whatever reason) because he's no longer going to be addressed as "Knight Captain Cullen" or "Templar Cullen" because title and rank will pretty much be obsolete (especially if he is a companion). So rather than him just introducing himself as "Cullen" they decided to Jazz it up a little by adding in a Surname, that possibly could be part of his back story.
DG wasn't Cullen's writer in either game, but originally Cullen was only a minor character. There's an interchange with Sheryl Chee and DG back after DA:O re: Cullen, all that creepy hair brushing stuff, where Sheryl says that when she was writing Cullen it was an afterthought to make the templar in the cage the same guy you meet in the Tower. So, it definitely sounds like he wasn't originally very fleshed out. You can also see that a bit from his chr file, which is rather short.
On DA3, this is totally what I'm thinking as well: that for some reason he suddenly NEEDS a last name, like how Lola described. They could even do that without getting into his backstory, for the simple reason that an NPC needs a way to introduce himself. Of course, I'm hopeful that it means we learn more about his background, too!
In this case, he could still just be a regular Joe, like being a commoner with distant nobler lines resulting in a last name, you just didn't need to hear his last name prior to him having his rank stripped. If he is a noble or something, then I would expect the last name to be a bigger character point then, where we learn that he was the blacksheep for choosing the templars or something (bleh, like Evangeline...). I suppose that's another reason I'd rather him be a regular Joe: that's just one too many similarities with Evangeline.
