Good evening.

Does this mean that when it comes to dialogue wheel there will still be the option of the protagonist being helpful/nice or charming/sarcastic or mean/aggressive, but during other scenes he/she will be more neutral?  I am a bit confused (also not sure what granularity means!)

Heya! Yes, this is how I am interpreting it. My guess on the granularity comment is that, since you won't be developing an "average" tone over the course of the game, then for an action choice to have a tone, you would have to do it in two steps. (1) Choose the action, and then (2) Choose the tone. But that's too complicated so now there's no tone, just neutral words.

It also sounded like no longer any tone on banter, which is a bit of a shame.

DG said that they've come up with a way to work around the banter thing. So although we won't have a central personality trait anymore, we'll still be able to respond accordingly.

For a minute there I thought "oh no" because I love the banter. But now reading above I feel a bit better. Phew!

I heard it was partly due to the Mirandamancers, haha but ya thats been shut down for a while now. Shame too :/

Do you think it will ever be reopened? Tis a shame indeed! I haven't ventured into the ME boards but I think I would have tried those threads first

Maybe, it was closed down months ago though. I just hope it hasn't put them off doing romance/companion/npc forums in the future.

My god, this is depressing. Yet more bad news regarding DA3. They are changing things that really actually WORKED in DA2 and made it fun and exciting and re-playable. Grrrrr.

Can we get some GOOD news up in here for DA3!?!??!!?!!?

I'm trying not to worry myself about it yet, his posts were too obscure to form a decent idea about whatever the hell he's talking about.

If it is done in such a way that it enhances dialogues and such, it might work. But honestly I am still confused. Origins he said was more neutral, but honestly it never bothered me that it was but we didn't have character VO's for our Wardens so ya.  I don't know how they will incorporate this idea exactly to know if it sounds good or bad. But it might work?  Don't get upset yet, we don't know!  Stay chipper :)

Urgh, I'm really feeling a bit "meh" about DA3 now. Although the lack of news is a good sign, it does nothing for my enthusiasm.

I know :(  info would be good.  I am seeing 2013 or 2014 for release date, anything concrete?  And if it is a late 2013 release, we should be hearing something soon right?

Mike Laidlaw said on Twitter that they were still on target for a 2013 release. They're aiming for sometime in the Fall, so hopefully we'll get a reveal of some sorts too, since leaving it any later than June would probably be cutting things fine from a promotional view point.

@Lola and ya, I do feel a bit "meh" right now about it all, but I think its just the lack of reasons to get excited since most of it is just a big unknown. So you can really think about any of it because we have no details or specifics to wonder or speculate about. Just really vague tweets and that one leak.

It must feel kinda weird for you, since you're new to the thread so you've missed out on so many details about DA3 that we've discovered over the past year, then you got a lot of it pretty much all at once LOL.

Gaider went into a little more detail about the dialogue wheels:
Ghost43 wrote...
I'm not sure I understand-- is there a tone wheel seperate from the dialogue choices?

David Gaider wrote...

No, it's not separate. We term the dialogue wheel which has tone choices to be the "tone wheel" and the dialogue wheel which has action choices to be the "action wheel". In the former your choices are mainly roleplaying... you're deciding how to say something, or what topic to address, but you're not doing anything. In the latter your choices are what to do about something (or expressing an opinion which doesn't involve tone).

In DA2, options on the choice wheel had a single paraphrase but three different spoken lines which varied based on the player character's dominant tone. As I mentioned previously, this made it difficult to come up with a paraphrase for all three (aside from being fairly expensive, wordcount-wise). While the answer could have been to paraphrase each line separately, in the end we decided the content was better used elsewhere.

In DA3, we are adding the "reaction wheel" to the previous two categories. This covers any situation where an emotional response is called for, where the three tones don't cover the needed territory (sadness, shock, rage... or just being stoic if one prefers), but we haven't shown it yet nor will I discuss it much.

But those are the three basic dialogue wheels with which we work, and the terms are specific to us writers. They're not ones you need to use. From the perspective of the player, one dialogue wheel is the same as any other.
Now that the ME3 stuff has finished (I assume it has) all the focus should now be on DA3. So I like to hope that little snippets of information will start appearing.

But do you think Bioware will stay quiet until the World of Thedas comes out next month?

LOL Yeah, it's weird to think how long we've been trawling for tidbits now.

DeMarco09, with regard to Cullen... we know a tiny bit more than that.  I wrote up a summary once upon a time of everything we "know" about his inclusion in the future of DA here, if you're interested: The Case For Cullen in DA3: The January 2013 Edition

Partially my own fault, I got so wrapped up in ME3 that I didn't pay attention to DA3 except for a few announcements and such. When the title came out I was intrigued but I didn't really search anything out. I was kinda still pissed off hahaha   But then ME3 crashed and burned with that ending and well I was bored and decided to check out the DA forums and well here I am.  Much more lighthearted than the ME forums at the moment. Even after a year there is still hurt feelings on that forum so ya, I am glad I moved over :)

Its like, DA2 aggravated me, then I got all excited about ME3 and like did soooo many different playthroughs for it and was on the forums like 24/7... then IT aggravated me with the ending LOL its like wow  do I really need to keep doing this to myself? hahaha

I'm sure there will still be sarcastic options for the character.

And we should not judge something unless we tried it ourselves. :wizard:

I still think there will be a sarcastic, agressive, and nice choices.   Its just not going to be like DA2.

As fun as DA2, the harsh reality is that it only sold half of what Origins sold.    People should not expect the game to be like DA2 and or Origins. Its going to be different.

Hard to believe it's been a year! Which means it's been a year since I joined the BSN, bloody hell lol.

Lol, I know exactly what you mean about putting yourself through it over and over again. I just hope DA3 breaks the run of bad luck.
