I once read and Bethany/Cullen smutfic which had Cullen being ****ing awful to her during a sexual encounter that was basically forced upon them by Isabela, it went on for pages and pages, one minute he was insulting her for being a mage and then he'd make her cry so he'd suddenly be all tender and sweet, then he'd turn on her again, whilst she'd get her own back, all whilst numerous sexual acts occurred between them. And this went on and on for pages and pages.
After a while I was like, **** this bullsh!t and stopped reading it. I got to the stage where I was like "oh for god sake either kill each other or find a way out of that ****ing room!" I was really angry LOL!
ya... ruining a character's persona is .... but ruining it in THAT way, bringing sexual acts into it is really borderline sick. Anything about abuse with sexual acts is, well there is something wrong with that individual. Especially when you take two characters who people already know and also know their personalities to where they know those characters would never do that.... it just is extremely horrific writing. I am sure in an academic list of what not to do when writing.... this would be highlighted lol god, now I am all ragefest about this person. I don't even know who the writer is but I want to verbally assault them.

Yeah, that is sorta hard to read, since I often hope that fanfiction is rooted in love for the property. But then, I suppose some folks like to write different kinds of stories that may not work for my own escapist, happily-ever-after needs.Batteries wrote...

Well, as a sheepish writer of fanfic, I don't really want to start throwing stones about what's "good" or "bad." There's a certainly a spectrum in characterization, partially I think because different folks see different things in existing characters, and no one can really say what's 100% "in character" except for that character's creator. But, indeed the spectrum is wide... particularly on the kinkmeme, which is probably why it's also heavily tagged.
OOC-ness (and even in characterness) on kinkmeme is great. It's hilarious and I can take it with a laugh. In the end, I pretty much like all fanfic so long as it's actually readable, including "what is going on this is great" fics.
The only time I question everything is when If feel like an author is trashing a character just because they don't like them.
I guess the negative feelings of the words and towards the character bounces off to me as the reader? Maybe making me feel like that is an accomplishment on their part? I am not sure.
I'll embarassingly admit I have written things before, but I just don't post them.

Don't get your blood pressure up just yet...
I think it was just in the way it sounds... the whole abuse + sexual nature of it doesn't bode well with me. I obviously can't form an opinion without reading it, but I don't think it would be a good idea. I mean I had to walk out of the room while watching the scene in 300 that has the queen getting .... verbally abused while being tormented .... I understand it was supposed to incite hate for that guy, but I can't watch stuff like that, it just boils my blood.

Great series, great characters, except.. I couldn't keep watching after the first few episodes because watching Daenerys being molested and raped just made me feel ill.
The wikipedia description of her doesn't help either:
"Daenerys is at first afraid of her new husband but after learning the Dothraki language, and how to enjoy sex, she manages to get past their barriers. She begins to understand him and genuinely falls in love with him after learning Drogo is a smart leader and a kind man."
She is a really great character, though. But as I said, I only got through the first few episodes. It certainly does have a "just keep watching" feel to it, but I don't want to keep watching something that makes me feel blargh, even if I feel immensely fascinated by the story at the same time.
Heck, I teared up at how much I feel like I relate to Arya Stark.

Actually if you read the book, her encounter with her husband isn't as brutal as depicted in the movie. It was tolerable, he was actually not as barbaric as the movie made it seem. He had a soft side. Although I don't like her being sold and stuff, her story is really sad and moving. I feel bad for her. That series has made me so angry watching, but after reading the books I understand some of it better. The prince is a little s***. But ya, read the books, soooo much better plus you get great backgrounds on the characters.

Oh agree, everyone has their triggers, and non-con or dubious con is a big one for many people, which is why it's generally tagged. I've had reservations about Game of Thrones myself for just that reason; the Danaerys storyline sounds hard for me to watch. But, also to be clear, the story Lola's referring to, the sex is consensual... if misguided or far fetched. So just trying to defend violence against that author, not suggest that folks should read stuff they don't like.
lol muse I am not going to go verbally bash the author, I was joking. I am so not confrontational.

LOL Oh, I know! I didn't expect you to reach through the screen and throttle her. LOL It's just a little too easy to start prescribing ill intent to authors who write stuff we don't particularly like or agree with sometimes. Especially in fandom.Demarco09 wrote...

Even if I sound angry.... im not lol plus the authors name wasn't mentioned I don't think so no harm done.

Yeah, I figured that was the one. The set up was definitely far fetched! But, I actually liked how she didn't white wash how Cullen would respond to such indignities. Or what a milksop I think Bethany might be. LOLLolaLei wrote...

It's been a while since I read it, altho I don't remember thinking that myself. I think I just found it to be very "rivalmance-y". "I'm mad, I don't like you, I'm mad, I'm mean, Oh... OK, guess I like you, let's have sex." LOL I'm sure it's hard to do that back and forth well.LolaLei wrote...
Oh, the writing wasn't bad, it was just his constant change of personality from being really over the top in the insult department to suddenly being tend and sweet... Constantly. Just the one change of heart would've been fine, but it just bugged me how it just went on and on chopping and changing.
Anyhoo, I guess that's the beauty of fanfic!
