Oh if you mention the f-word, you will have to immediately run and put tape over my mouth because it is one of my favorite subjects lol! My area of study is children's literature, but it merges with fem theory quite often (as you can imagine).

So what happens if Cullen is a typical gentleman in DA3, holding open doors and stuff like that? :D

Oh, I am absolutely counting on that...

From my experience, the guys from the South are much more polite toward women. The difference in culture is definitely glaring when you start to travel around the country.

Oh they are EXTREMELY polite!! Everyone is polite in the south. All children call their elders "sir" and "ma'am"; some children even have to call their parents that. And you don't say bad things about people; you don't make a scene. So for example, even if you are homophobic and aren't happy about seeing two men or two women in public, if someone else starts talking crap to that couple, you will go up there and tell that person to mind his/her manners and show some respect.

I am not even kidding; there was a video done of this that proved people in Texas are more likely to stand up for a gay couple than people in NYC!

That's not to say people in the south are goodness incarnate; they still VOTE according to their inner hatreds, fears, and prejudices.

That used to surprise me. I held the view that most Southerners are homophobic and racist (I blame CNN). I also held a view that most straight guys think that gay guys would want to molest them or something (I blame Fox), so they would chase them out of town. I talked to many Southerners and realized that I was wrong. They may be prejudice, but they are very respectful about it. It's surprised me about how prejudice I am about prejudice people, so now I would judge a person first rather than where he comes from or what he looks like.

Is it bad that I imagine you talking with a Southern accent in that quote. lol

Really? It's normal for women to hold the door open for men and visa versa in the UK, it's just polietness.

Yeah, at least where I live. Only men do it. Now I'm not talking about holding the door AFTER you've gone in so that the person behind you doesn't get a door slammed in his/her face lol We do that. But only men hold doors open for women here.

I do live in the American south, though.

Hey, I live in the West coast, and you would be lucky if the guys didn't  slam the door on your face.

tell me about it.

And you wouldn't find it sexist or sexist of the person that added it into his character/dialogue?

Weeeelll, it's threads like that that cause most of us to stay in here. So, I'd say let's not really get into feminism and gaming and whatnot here in our happy place. By and large, BW, and particularly the DA writers have done a  bang up job with Dragon Age. 'Nuff said.

Okay, but it's kind of sad because I avoid discussing things like feminism and gaming in those threads because they are, well, full of Neanderthals and trolls. So the only place I could talk about it with intelligent and kind people would be here.

Oh, oh, in other (similar) news, Anita Sarkeesian's first "Woman v. Trope" video is out!!! I haven't watched the whole thing yet, so not sure if she mentions BW at all.

Well, what I would do (if I wanted to put my critical lenses on) was question whether or not Cullen lives in a society that espouses our own medieval notions of chivalry. If Thedas is indeed a world where men and women are seen as and treated inherently different (i.e. women are by nature gentler, more emotional, and spiritually cleaner than men - all things that are untrue, but show that gender is nothing but a social construct), then I would certainly question why the writers chose to create it in that fashion.

But more than likely I would conclude that the writers weren't thinking that deeply and either relying on their own subconscious ideas about gender (which, again, is socially constructed) or that they are relying on the player's inate ideas about gender: i.e. Let's make Cullen chivalrous because that will clue the player in to something about his character ("He is noble and good").

Why did you ask me that; I want to write an article on Cullen and Thedas and gender now lol
