You know, all this Lyrium Dust I keep finding stashed around the circle tower is really making me think the mages are like drug dealers, bribing the templars with "the dust" to make them turn a blind eye. :P

God, I hadn't really thought about the dichotemy that lyrium is seemingly so plentiful for mages and yet so regulated for templars. Yeah, that has recipe for disaster written all over it! LOL

Considering that the Mage Collective openly operates on the Circle's own doorstep and one of their missions is to bribe Templars with lyrium...?

Does that make First Enchanter Irving the Mage version of Tony Montana?!

Drop the wise old Merlin act, we're onto you!

LOL I had a story idea brewing once about evil templars abusing mana- and lyrium-deprived mages... but it might be much more interesting to write from the opposite perspective! LOL Poor little templars...

Unless the world decides to be cruel to me, I'm pretty much free most days to do it. I wouldn't mind starting a character over and customizing him/her to whatever was wanted most (I am going to assume female mage because Cullen) ^_^

There's an example of what it'd look like, if anyone was curious about how good the quality would be. The sound only cuts out at a few points because I opened another window over the game, so I'll try to find a way to fix that. :?

The lore around Lyrium really confuses me sometimes.

I didnt' realize that about Shale either, altho given how clever she was, I suppose I should've guessed! LOL

I was thinking back to DG's tweet about writing a character that was like going home again... whatever it was he said. Now that we hav a list, we have a better chance at guessing who it was! I'm still thinking Morrigan...

Alistair, though? You'd think he'd figure into DA3 somehow. Although perhaps if he's not king...

I'm sure even non-king Alistair could fit into it, but I guess we have to wait until his comic series is over. I'm pretty sure he goes off on the adventure anyway if he's still a warden.

I'm curious too. Ser Gaider has explicitly said that if you killed Anders, he is dead. Has he (or anyone) said the same about an executed Alistair? All my years of playing games and watching anime/manga have taught me that "If you didn't SEE it happen..." :P

thanks for posting that DG blog link, R2! It answers a question I've been asking for years. (If you're curious, the question was "Who wrote Keldorn?" He and Mazzy are my most favoritest video game characters EVER, and I never knew who to blame.)

Ok, so that thread in the DA3 forums about having a protagonist that isn't a "special snowflake" has given me inspiration for a new question:

If you could pick any type of background for your new protagonist, what would it be? And how would you have him/her introduced into the Inquisition. This includes family background, class, gender, where he/she is from, race, etc. Feel free to go into as much or as little detail as you want!

Here's the kind of background I'd like for my DA3 protagonist and how she comes to be the Inquisitor (or whatever):

Female. Apostate mage (although I also wouldn't mind this kind of background for a rogue or a warrior). Human. (I don't mind where in Thedas she's from):

The protagonist has spent her life on the streets: Your mother was a penniless drunk that often sold her body just to get her next drink, you don't know who your father is but it's likely that it was one of her "clients". When you were just 8 years old you witnessed one of your mothers jealous lovers murder her in cold blood before turning his knife on you, suddenly something snapped inside you. Before you realised what was happening you'd burnt the man to a cinder, and that was when you realised you were a mage. Terrified that the Templars would take you to the big scary circle or kill you, and newly orphaned, you fled the area by stowing away in the back of a merchants cart. Arriving in Val Royeaux (or wherever the new game has us start out) you purposely get lost in the crowd, sticking to the cities seedy underbelly. There you learn the skills needed to survive, your magical talent giving you an extra edge against any would-be attackers. During your time on the streets you befriend another street urchin. You and he have run together for years, living off your wits, often travelling into the richer parts of the city to steal/con the rich folk, sometimes for money, sometimes for fun.

Over the past month/year or so (depending on how soon after Asunder this takes place) you've noticed that the mage/templar rebellion and civil war has been beneficial to you, the commotion has allowed you to steal and thrive easier. You don't care about the mage/templar issue despite being a mage since you're only interested in looking out yourself (and your friend/implied potential lover, if you want), the pair of you have silly grand plans to eventually make enough money to get yourselves off the streets, go travelling or whatever (you're made to believe that he's your best friend and that he's got your back). Through the grapevine you hear about some sort of peace gathering, and the pair of you decide that this would be the perfect opportunity to make some easy money (via stealing/conning/doing odd jobs or whatever mini quests are available at the gathering), in the middle of your mini crime spree your friend steals something from an important looking person, the person notices and your friend swiftly plants the item on you instead and makes a run for it leaving you behind to take the punishment. Just as you're about to be apprehend the magical blast happens (or whatever it is), throwing the area into chaos.

The blast sends you flying, temporarily knocking you out. Your would-be jailor aggressively shakes you awake as a cutscene occurs in which you see the fallout happening around you and the important person's dead body on the ground nearby. You are temporarily forced to work with your jailor to fight your way to safety, he intends to lock you up once you're both out of the line of fire. You continue to fight your way to safety, until you encounter a mini boss fight which kills your jailor. You notice that the situation is getting worse as more demons (or whatever) approach, so you get the hell out of there fast. As you stumble to safety, the wake of the destruction becomes clear. Slumping yourself down on the floor to catch your breath you realise you're still carrying whatever it is your friend planted on you, and as you pull the item from your pocket to look at it someone sees you holding said item and presumes you're the important person. Not wanting to risk getting yourself arrested for theft you play along, presuming you'd be able to make your escape later, but of course things escalate out of control and you find yourself leading the Inquisition.

Ok, your turn! (Sorry that was so long LOL).

So, I'm chiming in late -- but about the mages and why anyone would ever want to not help those poor, downtrodden souls...
I think one of the main themes of DA (and it does have themes -- DG is first and foremost a writer, after all) is that the person who has power will abuse it. The historical Inquisition (which became the Templar order) rose up in defense of the everyman who were being systematically abused by mages (not every mage, surely, but enough to form a stigma) to the point that people began to abandon their normal lives and devote themselves to protecting the defenseless against abusive magic.

As of 9 Dragon when we enter the scene, the mages have been subdued and are being squeezed so tight that the oppressed are now the oppressors. They're packed into these Circles and treated so badly that the whole place is like a powder keg that only needs one spark to blow completely out of control. It's a bad situation. Let's not forget that they're *policed* by an institution that profits greatly from the making and selling of potions and magical artifacts. It's a recipe for mismanagement (to say the least). But because the Chantry has power, the Chantry abuses power. Because the Imperium has power, the Imperium abuses power. Mages with too much power will abuse their power. Dwarves with too much power will abuse their power. Etc. etc.

When the two factions break apart in "Asunder" there's definitely need for a third faction that will be a voice of reason. Whatever your definition of reason is. Just take a look at the DAIII discussion forum and you'll see that not everyone agrees on that point. But regardless of whether you're with the mages, templars, both, or neither, the conflict will set the stage for good gameplay. Image IPB

Me, I'm probably going to replay this thing all to pieces and explore every point of view at least once. Image IPB

That's pretty much how I feel about it. You just elaborated it better than me lol. With great power comes great responsibility.  I think that like our world, all humans are selfish to a certain degree. Not a single person in our world can say otherwise. Thedas has a lot of weak willed people inside it. Seems only natural when they finally possess power they abuse it.

I'm probably going to be a snarky **** my first time through. Probably because I can't do that in rl lol and so it's nice to see the evil side.

I remember Jessica Merizan talked about BSN was going to get a lot of changes soon. She said that months ago. Is this what she's talking about? The site isn't optimized well for devices like mobile phones either. I'm wondering if they'll change that finally.

Hmm. I'd have to think about this. I think if I was to start a character though, I'd want them to be the rags to riches type background. Someone who starts with absolutely nothing in life and battles his/her way to the top. I like these type of stories because not only is it relatable and motivational, it plays right into RPG gameplay too. Starting out as level 1 with no abilities makes sense since you basically have nothing.

Maybe an apostate mage for me. I'd like a tragic past where I lost control of my abilities and had to fight through it. Possibly playing the amnesia card a bit? That could explain the lack of ability as a mage. Then I craft my own history as I see fit and 'remember' things. The tragedy is linked to why I'm nobody and have no title. I think something along those lines would be how I'd want my PC. I honestly don't want to be associated with any organization in Thedas or carry a former title(Seeker/Templar/etc.). I want a blank slate to start with so I can make him/her exactly how I want. I'll probably be forced into the Inquisition and I guess that will make sense. That will be part of my rise to a prominent person in Thedas who originally had nothing.

I think that all RPGs that let us craft our own stories should have the blank slate background.

Yeah, I like the idea of being a nobody that rises to power and/or achieves great things.

I guess I just really like the underdog story LOL!

You know, I kinda want to play LolaLei's protagonist, the idea of a random person from the streets, being mistaken for someone important and forced to play that role would be awesome?!

Thinking about it a little more, I think I like the idea of my protagonist (particularly in BioWare games) having experienced a lot of hardship in their life prior to their big adventure because enviably they'll end up meeting (and recruiting) a group of strangers into their team, who eventually become the protagonist's friends, so it's like he/she ends up with a little make shift family that he/she comes to care deeply about, thus giving him/her a reason to continue to pursue whatever the main objective is.
