So, since the devs have said that the protagonists background, class and specialisation will play a bigger part in how characters/companions/npcs react to him/her, I'm wondering if Cullen will actually allow himself to romance a mage (if he's a companion/LI).
See, I know that Cullen is no longer completely anti-mage like he was at the end of DA:O and early on in DA2, but that doesn't mean he can bring himself to trust one yet. Now, that could be part and parcel of a Cullen+Mage protagonist story/romance arc, but I could see DG 'n' co wanting to really make an impact with how companions respond to certain classes/specialisations/etc. In one of his Tumblr posts Gaider did say that he'd ideally like to have the companions refuse to date certain types of protagonist/certain types of behaviour etc, but I dunno how much money and resources that would use up.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that he wouldn't find himself falling for a mage, since it's clear that he's not heartless or immune to their charms (despite his Templar training and Chantry brainwashing techniques), but I'm not sure that he'd go "all the way" or allow himself to get into a relationship with one, despite how much he may come to love/lust/adore one. I mean, he wouldn't allow himself to succumb to the Warden's charms in DA:O and he was much more sympathetic and "pro-mage" back then. Plus, the writers like to make us cry and rage. Which is probably reason enough for them not to allow a mage romance with him to come into full bloom, lol.
Your thoughts?
Hmm well that is kind of the approach I took when writing my "dark and stormy" fic. I couldn't wrap my head around how Cullen would allow himself to begin a relationship with a mage, especially one that was under his keeping. (Alain is a special case, ofc, considering he is also a rape victim, but I see Cullen struggling to resist his feelings and inclinations even towards a "happy" Circle mage like Bethany).
Which brings me to wonder if Cullen would react differently to an apostate. I think if he is forced into a situation wherein he himself is something of a rebel (i.e. breaking away from the Order), then he might find himself not so opposed to the apostate situation. Not that his feelings about magic would change, but that he might be more susceptible to giving in to feelings for an apostate (inquisitor, Warden, etc... just not a Circle mage).
Well those are my thoughts ^^
