Y'know what?

I just had this amazing idea for Cullen that I spent ages typing up and I accidentally hit the wrong key, which closed the tab and I lost the lot. I dunno if I can be arsed to type it all up again.

Hmm, hmm...

I think, after everything he's been through, Cullen will already be counted as a 'hardened' (hurrhurr) character? He isn't very similar to an un-hardened Alistair, anyway. And there's nothing to say that a 'hardened' character can't also have their sweet moments. Alistair is still a sweetie even when you harden him. Same with Leliana.

I... like to think that Cullen won't need 'saving', though. I don't mind if the protag will be the 'one thing' that goes right for him (similar to the Garrusmance), but I'm, personally, not into the saving thing so much? I guess I like my LI's to be able to stand on their own two feet, own their situations and themselves, and not need their potential romantic interest to play therapist or babysitter. To each their own, of couse, though!

(...Or... I guess it also depends on what counts as 'saving'. Some people might say the Garrusmance is sorta 'saving' him. Same with the Fenrismance. If that's the case, I wouldn't have too much problem with it.)

As for the moment in the cage... I guess we won't really know unless Cullen talks about it if he's a companion and LI.

I don't mean "saving" as in "love will cure all your head mess". Rather, that we kinda help bring something "good" to his life, rather than constant bollocks LOL!

Ah, that I'm okay with! It's a bit like how it is with Garrus, that way, and that kind of saving I have nothing against.

It's the 'love will cure everything!' that I find weird, and I felt I needed to cover that? I've seen some pretty weird stuff on the BSN. I've seen people who are cross their love didn't 'cure' Anders too, when I personally rather love that it doesn't. Give my poor Hawke who uses humour as a coping mechanism something he can't brush off with humour!

So I finally decided to be bothered and downloaded the hi-res textures for DA II. Lets see if it breaks my computer!

Ok, idea time!

What if, the reason Cullen avoids relationships (and possibly sex) is because something happened to him when he was a kid that messed with his head. I don't mean anything dodgy though.

For example, perhaps he feels responsible for the death or serious injury to a friend/sibling that he feels guilty for because it was his idea to do the thing that caused the unfortunate accident to happen. He and his friend/sibling used to talk about being Knights when they grew up, battling evil and protecting those in need (like kids do). When Cullen comes of age he decides to honour his friend/siblings death/paralysation by joining the Templar Order (thus his mention of joining because he wanted to be a Knight to a male Surana/Amell in DA:O). Of course, joining doesn't get rid of his overwhelming sense of guilt and as more things go wrong (his infatuation with a female Surana/Amell and/or his torture in the Circle Tower) he begins to believe that this is his punishment sent by the Maker that he must endure. He already avoided forming close friendships or relationships as he felt that he would only cause them harm because he was a danger to be around, this foolish notion becomes reinforced the more he witnesses people dying around him etc.

After joining the Kirkwall Order he grew up a little bit, but still avoids close friendships and relationships, this time trying to convince himself that his sole purpose is to serve the Templar Order and as such doesn't need or want close friendships/relationships because he can't afford distractions. However, deep down he knows he's using his job/title as an excuse, he feels now more than ever that he is a danger to be around, especially due to his job and he's not sure he can deal with anymore loss. He still carries the guilt of his friend/siblings death/injury but worse still, he's still silently suffering with survivors guilt after his torture and PTSD as an accumulation of everything he's experienced during the past 10+ years (including the Meredith thing).

How does that sound as a back story? I had this idea for a scene in which Cullen wants to show the protagonist something, so he takes her/him to his friend/siblings grave OR to meet the paralysed friend/sibling who he's been sending money back to pay for his/her care.

(This isn't as presentable as the first post, but I can't be arsed to go into massive detail all over again).

Lola....do you need a hug? I feel like you need a hug.

That's a really tragic backstory, also very um, I want to say interesting but that's not really the right word for it. It's very developed. Does that sound less creepy?

Break him down so your PC can pick him back up, hmm?

PC: Alright Cullen, why don't we discuss a little about your-

Cullen: Uh...why aren't you wearing any pants?

PC: Don't change the subject. Now, lie back down and tell me if your mother hugged you enough as a child!

I like it. I especially like the idea of Cullen having a childhood companion, and that this companion/friend shaped who he is today... so if there was some sort of tragedy, it's something that's weighed on his mind all these years.

I'm down with loads of angst and hardship, so long as he gets a happy ending!

*Sigh* ok. Fine. I'll post something sensible.

Something I desperately missed when playing DA2 was the abillity to simply prattle on with our companions about mundane, every day stuff. In DA:O the Warden could squee over shoes with Leliana, or ask her for tales. Seeing Oghren get drunk and pass out in camp was always hilarious. Having Sten challenge the Warden's every move, whilst Wynne took a more than passing interest in my Warden's thoughts, which was always interesting.

I really missed that aspect of the game, since I felt that it really brought home just how much all their lives had changed since the Blight hit. It was kinda like they were trying to hold on to a sense of normality amidst utter carnage. I know it was kinda different in DA2 since it was mostly Hawke inadvertently getting dragged into every issue going on in Kirkwall, but it would've been nice to still have that dynamic with the companions.

I'm hope they bring those sorts of interactions back in DA3, if that leaked survey is anything to go by then the situation in Thedas is going to be grave indeed. It needs those extra little touches just to drive home how much life has changed for the protagonist 'n' co.

If I was any good at writing stories, I think I'd get addicted to making fans cry. I'd be perfect for BioWare... if it wasn't for my sheer lack of talent and terrible grammar.

Well, Kaidan was angsting over killing this teacher for hitting some girl he used to like when he was a teen! He was in his mid-30s by the time Shep met him, so that's not all that different to Cullen in his mid-30s angsting over a friend/sibling either dying or left paralysed for life after an accident that he feels responsible for, lol.... not to mention the rest of his head mess with the torture and stuff.

... Ok, so it might be slightly excessive for one person to endure, but it's different! I don't think any other BioWare character has gone through so much crap LOL!

It wasn't a bad idea at all, that is just how I'd feel about him, like I'd expect this.

Protagonist: So do you like pets?

Cullen: I love them, I had one as a boy. He was a little Mabari I named Jiffy

Protagonist: Aww, must have been great.

Cullen: It was....until my little brother flayed him alive and fed me the bits....

Protagonist: :sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick:

Yeah, recieve a message from Bodahn telling Hawke to meet the other in the Hanged Man for drinks and cards, which would cue a little cutscene of them all relaxing together. That would've been cute.

My theory is they'll take a leaf out of ME3's book and have the companions each hang out in their own separate rooms in the castle, then every now and then we'd go to check in on them and they'd be chatting to one of the other companions or training out in the courtyard etc.

I hope they also give us a chance to hang out with or interact with the companions sometimes between quests, just to do something light hearted occasionally.

Cullen: Oh yes, quite a few actually. Some mages to.

Protagonist: :) Oh thats nice, do you keep in touch.

Me to, sometimes in DA2 it felt like our guys were being funny...when it was a bit innappropriate...

Hawke: Mother!!!!

Varric: Wow, that mage must be funny, he's left her in stiches *slaps knee*

Hawke: Please don't leave me!

Isabela: Geez, she really needed a man, she such a stiff.
:blink:Geez why am I so macabre tonight/today?
