Zelda - That's what I thought troll meant but I guess I missed the reference. Does Bioware make a habit of dropping comments and then leaving or something? I tend to ignore people that do this anyway. It's too high school-ish for me and gives me a headache. Reality shows have a similar effect on me. lol

R2 and Lola- I just thought it would be hilarious given all of the serious venom people seem to have re: where's the Warden, etc. Here's your Warden punk! And he's not voiced... at all. And Hawke too. Didn't DG say "Alistair never loved you"? That can be what Hawke scrawls in blood on the wall. Hahaha!

Wel, no, not comments per say. I just jokingly called them that because maybe they deliberetely put sad and tragic moments in their games just to get the forums talking and fans arguing and debating. And all the while, they are sitting in their offices, watching the comments roll in while munching on popcorn, and laughing maniacally.

Comments and stuff is just where the Troll thing originated. Over time, it just grew and expanded to other things. I just called Bioware Trolls because maybe they did it all deliberetely to get a reaction, and y'know, get us all talking and debating . . .

Sigh, never mind. Joke fail.

R2: I know, I'm just rubbish at this whole waiting thing. It does feel like the more I find out through twitter and hints on here, the less chance Cullen has of being a companion/LI. Then again other times he feels like a sure thing. It's just this Mage guy that's got me worried, especially as the bonus footage on the Dawn of the Seeker DVD heavily implies that he'll be not only a companion but the "leading man" companion wise who will be heavily tied into the main story.

Doesn't mean he'll be the only LI, though. Just one of them.

I know, but I was hoping Cullen would be the male LI that would be tied heavily into the main story like Alistair and Anders were in DA:O and DA2.

That would be nice. Altho, I honestly didn't find the Anders romance any more substantial than, say, the Fenris romance, IMO. Nothing really compares with Alistair. *sniff*sniff* I doubt they'll do something that big again ... but who knows. If not, that leaves a lot of room for multiple LIs.

now...all we need is an official DA3 announcement. :)

I read somewhere in a Gaider interview that he went into Alistair a little too much which he felt took the attention away from our Warden, I personally thought it was the perfect balance and it was a shame that DA:O didn't do that with all the companions. So I guess we probably won't ever get another romance in Dragon Age that's on par with Alistair.

Anders romance I guess was a severely dumbed down version of a companion that's plot heavy since he was the one that blew up the Chantry and set the wheels turning for the Mage/Templar rebellion. I guess I just don't want another healer Mage to be the male companion that's tied into the DA3 main story so soon after Anders. I know Alistair was practically a Templar but he never took his vows, didn't behave like one and was a Warden by the time our character met him so that doesn't count. I honestly couldn't think of a better character for the role than Cullen and I'm gonna be really disappointed if he doesn't make it into DA3 as a companion/LI.

I have a question: if Cullen is an LI, would you be open to the idea of him being bisexual, like Anders?

I wouldn't mind, guys deserve some Cullen loving' too! From a role playing point of view I'd be less inclined to try romancing any of the other characters if I knew I could pick Cullen whether I played as a male or female, but that's not a problem I could always just watch the other romances on YouTube LOL.

My canon Hawke is a male and romanced Anders... He just seems better suited to male Hawke than female IMO.

So reading R2's Muse's brilliant fanfic made me realize that though we know a lot about Cullen's character as far as him growing into a noble, levelheaded type of guy, but we don't know anything concrete about his likes or dislikes or how he would handle living in a situation outside of the Chantry (which is where he'd be if he were a companion in DAIII). I ask because I was reading R2's fanfic and thinking "Wow, that is exactly what Sebastian would say." or "That is exactly how Aveline would say that." (good job, lady!) but I have no idea what Cullen's internal *voice* actually sounds like, if that makes any sense. I have a hard time predicting what he'd say in a given situation unless it's directly tied to his duties as a Templar.

How do you guys interpret Cullen?

I know I for one kind of see him having a crisis like Alistair's when he leaves the Chantry and has to figure out how to save innocent lives without someone telling him how. Unlike Alistair though, I actually see Cullen responding to the stress by taking charge, not following orders. Maybe not trying to lead the group, but at least being very decisive about what he thinks the right course of action is. Thoughts?

Ooooo good one!

I'm not to sure either. I'd like to think he'd be a bit of a fish out of water in every day social situations since all he's ever known is his duty and Templar orders. I also like to imagine that he'd find delight in the little things the other companions take for granted, like sleeping in til noon, taking the time to admire the views, eat foods that he normally wouldn't have access to in the circle/gallows/chantry/etc. I definitely think he'd take charge once he felt confident that the new protagonist has faith in him, as it seems like he turns to those who are seemingly stronger than him for guidance (Hawke being a perfect example of this in DA2, where he would confide in him/her in a way that seemed to be seeking reassurance.) I also feel like he'd get quite flustered a lot like if our character or an NPC flirted with him or if we took him into a brothel lol.

In a relationship I think he'd feel a bit intimidated at first but also kinda oblivious since he's had little to no experience in that department. But I think he'd be very sweet once the initial drama was over and done with and would want to protect his lover.

If I were Bioware or DG I'd be bloody frightened to include Cullen as a companion to be honest...never mind a LI. I think a lot of the Cullen fans have a strong idea of who he is and what his personality is that even a small deviation from that wouldn't go down well. Anders didn't have half of the fanbase Cullen does and look at how they changed him. :crying: The Bioware offices would be stormed if they made him into something the fans didn't like IMO.

Agree. I would hope that anyone who wants to could romance him. I personally thought BW did a good job with Anders not making him overtly bisexual, so players could imagine him whatever orientation they wanted. For Cullen, I dunno. My hetero brain of course sees him hetero, but we haven't seen much of his romantic side, so who knows what might suit him best. And, like Lola, if he were romanceable by males and females, he's probably the only one I would ever choose in any playthrough! LOL

Eek, afraid I agree with you, Staarbux. This the main reason I'm starting to lose of hope. Seeing the massive backlash among some fans with the merest mention of him as a companion, I see BW avoiding that kind of controversy... They've already had their fair share of late. :(

Hee hee, hopefully this isn't because you found his inner voice from my fic didn't fit... Ahem... don't answer that... :? I'll just be over here smiling like an idiot at your kind words. :D

More seriously, good question! It's something I've been thinking about a lot for my new story, so it's very helpful to hear everyone's thoughts.

re: taking charge, this is what I've been thinking, too, that minus a reporting structure his leadership skills would start to blossom. That in fact, after being Knight-Captain, he can't help himself but continue to be takin' care of business Cullen and provider leadership and guidance when needed. Now, that said, I think even without a reporting structure, he would still seek out his "proper place" in the hierarchy. So, for example, being around someone like Hawke, he'll still  have issue with whether or not he can contradict her, since she's the boss. He'll still believe that having a structured hierarchy is an important thing, esp in battle or other high stakes situations, even if it's not the structure he's used to.

I love Lola's ideas that he'd be less familiar with many day-to-day types of experiences. He did go into the city from time to time, so I don't think he'd be bumpkinish or embarassingly ignorant. But, I'd bet some things sneak up on him that he's never done... like eating "exotic" foods, like an orange. I love the sleeping til noon idea... and if you don't mind, Lola, I may even steal that one!  Also, I totally see him falling back on his stuttering ways when confronted with personal, social discomfort, like being flirted with or even talking about the lovely ladies at the Rose.

Something else I've been thinking is that I don't see him having many (any?) close personal relationships in Kirkwall. After Kinloch Hold, I think he'd have trust issues, and once he came out of his shell in Kirkwall, he's now second in command, so can't really fraternize with the other templars, platonically or otherwise. That kind of social skill atrophies over time if you don't exercise it. Now, fast forward ten years or so, he's not terribly experienced with the simple act of having friends (lightbulb - hmm, could this be why he became sort of "work" friends with Hawke over the years?). Take him out of the Order, where he no longer has the comfort of rules limiting his fraternization, and it's a whole new, scary and unfamiliar playing field. One full of potential for delightful awkwardness, poor dear.

Hmm... sorry, didn't think I was going to write a treatise on this... but it certainly helped my own thinking! :wizard:

Quick response and then I'm MIA for a while....

I agree very much with this. And if there is any angst, it's minimal and fleeting - or private.

And my 2 cents on the whole sexuality thing. I DON'T CARE. lol Bi-sexual truly doesn't make a lick of difference to me and I don't see it making a huge impact on the story either. People should be able to make thier own choice on the romance anyway. I mean, if you're in a bar and someone of the same (or other) sex hits on you and you aren't interested, what do you do? You say no thanks and move on. It shouldn't ruin your life, for Pete's sake. Live and let live. Viva la revolution! LOLPosted Image

So someone asked DG why Alistair won't be in DA3 and he said "don't believe everything you hear on the Internet" but Steve Valentine said in one of his tweets that he wasn't. Gah, I wish they'd start giving us better clues!

It was more like it just made me realize how familiar the other characters' brains are, but Cullen's is still foreign and full of surprises! You really could have hit the nail completely on the head with his character and no one except David Gaider himself would be able to confirm it. Still a man of mystery, LOL! And you deserve the kind words. I'm 5 chapters to the end! Posted Image

Agree completely! Especially about finding his place in the world (being basically military, he'd feel the need to classify himself and others by rank and file for probably the rest of his life). Cullen's lack of experience with things non-Chantry, like market shopping for exotic foods like oranges, would provide really neat ways for someone who cares about him to spoil him with new experiences. I see him being really curious about the world, but wary too.

meanieweenie wrote...

I couldn't agree more, and hadn't even thought about that! When he's frustrated, I can see Cullen just stabbing the crap out of a practice dummy and if he's really really angry, abusing his body with physical training to the point that he's actually gone over the edge and hurt himself badly with overexertion. A scene where you walk in on this would be really interesting to me, in part because it would be a great way to learn about/confront the control freak in him and it would also be really sexy.

If Cullen leaves the Chantry, I can see him hate, hate, HATING the fact that he's lyrium addicted. I can even see him trying to quit cold turkey and break the addiction, if that's possible, just so that he can respect himself again. Or even turning to magic for some kind of healing, since mages are now no longer monsters and magic "exists to serve man".

If Gaider 'n Co. want some kind of serious, heartwrenching drama for Cullen's future story, they really need look no further than the fact that he'll be a guy either rejected by his order or useful to the Divine but scum to his fellow Templars, struggling with his fall from grace and his place in the world, now aiding those he once swore to punish for their connection to magic, and ironically having to face his own serious addiction to magic in its purest form. Not to mention the fact that the psychological trauma from the Ferelden Circle will haunt him for the rest of his days. How's that for angst? The beautiful thing about Cullen though is that I think he will have faith in himself and the Maker enough to try to overcome all that.

Love this idea of spoiling him with new experiences. It would be a poetic way to express how much he means to someone.

Also love this idea of how private he would be with his misgivings and that he would have control issues. I could totally see that. Being confronted with a world not nearly as ordered as his former life, how would he react? Imposing his own order on it? Imposing order only upon himself? I could see him being simultaneously forgiving of others but unforgiving of himself.

^This. Post-DA2 Cullen in a nutshell. Rife with heartbreaking ironies. But that he'd deal with them all with aplomb, since he's been broken before and is now made of sterner stuff.

Hmmm... so many good ideas... <3

Hey, everyone. Sorry for not posting much. I've been playing DA2, and I've been busy with school. I admit, I've ran out of things to post for a time too.

My mom and dad gave me a $100 gift card from amazon on my birthday, which I spent on photoshop elements 10 and pc dragon age 2, which I've been playing lately. I'm trying to make something with a screenshot of Cullen I took in the game. I'll post it when I finish it (won't be anytime soon though).

I'm trying to find this one song I really like from the Mark of the Assassin; it's the song when you're fighting Duke Prosper. I tried the extracting tips I've read on the forums, but it's too complicated and I don't think I have everything -- the python stuff that would make the programs required work; since they didn't work for me.
