Now wouldn't that be a kick in the pants to find out? Imagine the scandal if it got out that Templars had mage babies! The only side effect I'm familiar with is madness with prolonged use. Something like what you're talking about would bring a whole new dynamic to the Templar codex.... why the rules are as they are for them and such.littlenikki wrote...
On a different, somewhat related to Cullen, note. I had a really random thought this morning (literally have no idea where it came from) concerning Templars drinking lyrium. Aside from the addiction, what other side effects do you guys think it causes? I was thinking that as an unknown result, Templars are more likely to have children that are mages (could be why they discourage Templars from having families, ala the tortured templar in the Broken Circle quest) I just remember Dagna saying that mages are thought to be born with Lyrium in thier blood, hence Templars being more susceptible to birthing mage children. I haven't read too much about lyrium and templars on the codex, so maybe this is covered, but it was just something that has been rolling around in my head today.
Oh wow, that's quite an idea, littlenikki! I know that in one of the lyrium codexes they talk about prolonged lyrium use causing strange deformities and strange things like that in the old magisters. Wow. If lyrium in the blood makes you a mage... heh, no wonder they have such rules against templars having relationships. Altho, I suppose I would also expect them to take a vow of celibacy or something if the Chantry were really concerned about it.
That's kind of a cool plot bunny there!!
From the lyrium codex:
Lyrium has its costs, however. Prolonged use becomes addictive, the cravings unbearable. Over time, templars grow disoriented, incapable of distinguishing memory from present, or dream from waking. They frequently become paranoid as their worst memories and nightmares haunt their waking hours. Mages have additionally been known to suffer physical mutation: The magister lords of the Tevinter Imperium were widely reputed to have been so affected by their years of lyrium use that they could not be recognized by their own kin, nor even as creatures that had once been human.
