I apologize for randomly bringing this up, but does anyone know how to cite in a footnote and bibliography content from a video game? I just noticed I had quoted some lines from Dragon Age: Origins, but didn't cite them.

*sigh* No idea, but tumblr seems to have that idea, too. Dunno who these Cullen fans are that are going out of their way to make others feel bad about not liking him...

Oh I've seen some Cullen fans get VERY defensive. Not necessarilly a bad thing, but every. "He's not my kind of guy" has sometimes been met with a lot of passion....sometimes TOO much. I mean I know I have gotten a little TO hot in my responses. I tended to apologize afterwards, but sometimes it's slipped through.

Edit: As Lola said most of the time I got angry because someone was attacking us, but at the same time I'd jump down the throats of innocent bystanders.

could be.

R2, are you the longest remaining person on this thread? You were here from the beginning of the old one, weren't you?

I am, but I wasn't in the old thread from the beginning. I think it was like 20 or 30 pages in when I joined.

Lol, that's still early on though. What was the old Cullen thread like when DA2 first come out? I know a few people thought he was gonna be a companion due to one of the in-game pictures of him that the devs posted up or something.

depends on the style of the medium. Is this for a paper, or a fanfic...? I've never seen a video game cited, but I'm sure there must be a format in computer science. Maybe google AP style for  games?

This is for my fanfiction. Even though it's a fanfiction, I can't help but be overly cautious. In both of the two fanfics I posted on fanfiction.net, I used some lines from DAO such as Cullen stammering when my mage talks to him.

I wasn't in that early. I didn't really join the forums until after I'd finished the games, which was a month or two after the game came out. Then, I settled on the Cullen forum after trying a few others out. So I have no idea what everyone thought initially. Also, the  thread wasn't started with the othercompanion threads.. It was a poster who a started a "dayaaaam, DA2!Cullen was fine, we want him as LI in DLC/next game" thread, that evolved into the "official fan thread".

So I have no idea what folks thought as they encountered him. I've never heard that about expecting him to be a companion.

oh, I would just put a disclaimer at the beginning that DA belongs to Bioware, not you. No need for footnotes or anything.

If you do decide to footnote it, maybe try using the same format as citing a film? Where it says put Studio/Distributor, put in the developer?

Thank you. In the second story I cited it like this: Bioware: Dragon Age: Origins, 2009. I don't think that looks right though...  In the first story, I just added a disclaimer and mentioned that if demanded, I will then add footnotes.

What I should really say is tht I've never seen a fanfic be that careful about it by using footnotes. The most I've seen are disclaimers at the beginning, and some don't even do that (although I don't know if they have direct quotes).

For myself, all I did was a disclaimer. I wonder what the rules are about derivative works, in terms of actual quotes. Anyone?

I remember the first "Dayuuum DA2 Cullen is fine, LI next game pl0x" thread :P
I don't know if I ever actually posted in the first thread, but I definitely lurked it.

I've been on these boards (and the one before) too dang long.

In MLA I would cite a video game similar to a film.

EDIT: p.s. that would be something like: Dragon Age: Origins. Prod. [???]. Writ. David Gaider. [blah blah anyone else important]. BioWare, 2009. I think. I do not have this stuff memorized, okay? :P

I don't think you need to cite the game in a fanfic. You are probably already violating copyright just by writing the fanfic... providing a citation is hardly going to cover your ****...

Where is BBM? I just met Kaiden in ME2... AND HE BROKE MY HEART. I seriously got choked up when he turned that gorgeous smile into a frown and refused to join Shepard's crew.

Also kind of surprised how homoerotic that scene was lol Would make sense between Kaiden and FemShep, but that was... way more than bromance-y with my BroShep lol

Thanks!  Hehe, true enough.   I thought that as long as you don't claim the ideas of the author as your own, or sell your fanfiction for profit, there wouldn't be repercussions from posting fanfictions online.

I have never run across any of these horrible Cullen fans I keep hearing about. I have however run across horrible DA fans who have been acting awful toward Cullen fans. The funny thing is, I came to you and this part of the fandom because you where the nicest. The Cullen fans are my respite and safe haven. :kissing:
I am a Cullen fan supporter. (I should have a banner saying that :P)

Anyhoo, I wanted to say that E3 starts Tuesday the 11th of June. But the EA press conference is on Monday the 10th of June. You can watch the live stream via different channels. One would be via EA themselves:
http://www.ea.com/e3

I would join you for a Skype session, but I'm going to be busy IRL, in a conference, at that exact point in time...

Edit: So meta I had to point it out. I am a fan of fans. Hahaha:kissing:

If anyone is interested in US copyright adaptation and fanfiction there is a link to an article on Wikipedia

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_issues_with_fan_fiction

There are authors who don't have an issue with Fanfic and I would definitely put Bioware as one of those.  I think all that would be required is an acknowledgement of the original work. I love fanfic, I think it helps promotes creativity.

Re ME2 Kaidan's appearance is so fleeting.  I really missed him as a companion in that game! The positives were that you got Grunt and Mordin as new companions and Tali and Garrus were still around.

Yay, I knew someone would know! Thanks (and to Doc Moto for the proper citation form!)! I love how professionally diverse our little community is. Ask us a question, any question, and I bet we have an expert lurking. :P

D'aww! Yeah, I think that's the reason most of us hang out here! It also reminds me that we're actually a small part of the fandom... Anyhoo, I may have to make that banner now... :bandit:

Ah, trying not to be jealous Scr0ll... that you'll be so oppressively, professionally busy right at that press conference moment... How terrible for you that you won't be here with us biting our fingernails in the peanut gallery... :P

Oh my god, I had a really sad Cullen dream.

He was working in a circle tower and some Mage framed him for something and he was going to be put to death, then at the last minute the Mage admitted that he'd lied and the protagonist had to rush through the circle tower with the first enchanter to get to him in time. When we got to him we found him at this massive table where everyone was sitting discussing his fate and Cullen was really rude to the protagonist because he was still in his "argh, I fancy a Mage and I'm going to hell" phase, until he broke down, admitted he was scared and quietly declared his love to the Mage protagonist.

... Then I woke up and didn't get to find out what happened next. Presumably she saved him though, since it was my dream, LOL! Weird.

There are SEVERAL people posting in the "5 things you don't want to see in DA3" who are saying they don't want to see Cullen because they are tired of hearing about him. WHERE?!??!??! I just wanted to say, maybe if you stopped lurking in the Cullen thread so much you wouldn't have to hear about him so often, because other than here, WHERE ELSE IS HE BEING DISCUSSED??? And apparently shoved willy-nilly into the face of unwilling readers?!
