They lurk here because you guys dig up a lot of DA3 related stuff long before any others get a wiff of it.motomotogirl wrote...

There are SEVERAL people posting in the "5 things you don't want to see in DA3" who are saying they don't want to see Cullen because they are tired of hearing about him. WHERE?!??!??! I just wanted to say, maybe if you stopped lurking in the Cullen thread so much you wouldn't have to hear about him so often, because other than here, WHERE ELSE IS HE BEING DISCUSSED??? And apparently shoved willy-nilly into the face of unwilling readers?!
R2,I'd proudly use a Fan of Cullen fans banner.

That's what I'd like to know. I read a tumblr confession about someone being "sick of hearing about him" which I take as a backwards "his fans won't shiut up" as if we're extraordinary in our fangirling of him. So I pointed out as diplomatically as I could that we don't go out of our way to put him in people's faces. We stick his thread and in the wishlist threads that pop up, we post in there - like everybody else does! I'm fine with people not liking him. What I CAN'T STAND are people attacking or disparaging us in some way, directly or subversively. Asking "Why do they like him so much" is a backhanded way of implying we're strange for it when it's not any weirder to horn on the other guys and gals in DA. So I try to keep my cool because I know we're not especially weird, nor do we badger people about him. If they're "sick of hearing about Cullen" it's either they're sick of people complaining how sick they are, with no real substance or they don't want us saying anything at all anywhere because freedom to fangirl is only for them *eyeroll* or they lurk in here. I can think of no other explanation for why anyone would be "sick of hearing about Cullen". <_<

LOL thanks! It's one of my favourites. Handsome devil, isn't he!
Indeed! I was thinking of him while I was driving earlier. My iPhone played a tune that my brain has ostensibly dedicated to him and Hawke - from my story Collide - and it put some new ideas in my head. I was mentally writing fic while I drove! haha! Now if only I could record that **** instead of having to type it all out...

You might surprise yourself once you start writing it down! You're probably better than you think. But getting a beta can help if you feel you need a second opinion.

LOL Samara, I do some of my best writing while driving as well. I plotted out a big chunk of Knight's Bloom on a roadtrip. Lately, I use Siri on my iPhone to jot down notes for me that occur while I'm out and about. Something to try?SamaraDraven wrote...

Let me tell you something though, the love shines through. Just last night I stayed up till around 5am reading a MShep x Joker fic just because I was in the mood for that pairing and couldn't really find much out there. So I stumbled on this fic, and bless her, she was apologizing and saying it was her first fic, and sure, the editor in me wanted to draw red lines here and there and rewrite some things, but guess who stayed up till 5am reading her fic? The love for her fandom came through and I was captivated by the emotions she was able to convey. That's all that matters.

If it helps, try to think of your story as if you were watching a film. Just write down what they are doing and saying. Even if it's mostly dialogue, it's a start. Don't get bogged down in description... lots of people will open fics with several lengthy paragraphs of description, but this can actually be quite boring. My favorite fics open with dialogue or just "So-and-so was sitting at the Hanged Man contemplating his recent actions and wondering where on earth he'd gone wrong." No need to describe in detail every little thing that is simultaneously occuring at the Hanged Man lol

This is sort of what I've been wondering as well. Certainly around BSN, the fangirling is pretty limited to in here, so if you don't like it... um... don't stop by the Cullen thread! LOL In the main DA3 forums? I think we learned our lesson about participating at all in those threads with respect to Cullen, too, although spontaneous fangirling still happens sometimes. Maybe such incidents, when taken through the lens of Cullen being the only semi-confirmed character for DA3, stand out more. Around tumblr, I'm even less certain. I realize I still don't really understand the tagging system or how most folks "receive" their input there. So, there may be ways of still being bombarded by Cullen without wanting to be. I dunno; this is something I've been puzzling about recently.SamaraDraven wrote...

Of course, the simplest solution for anyone to avoid hearing about Cullen is to stop talking about him yourself. LOL

Totally! Just start trying to write what your seeing in your head, let it play out and use whatever words come at the moment to you to create that imagery. You can always go back and clean up what you wrote later. It always helped me to have only a slight direction that I wanted to take a story in, then let the characters in your head shape and form the details (and sometimes even change the outcome) As MMG said, when you put so much time getting to know and love these characters, it really shows in the writing regardless.

Nah, any regular tumblr user has Tumblr Savior, which lets you block unwanted tags. So you can block "Cullen," "Knight-Captain Cullen," "Ser Cullen," and you're golden. Beyond that, you can simply unfollow people who post Cullen. So if you are on Tumblr and you see a lot of Cullen, it is because you want to.

That's a good habit to do anyway, Lola. Sometimes, I sit on something I've written for forever and I'll go and rework it at times until one day, I get it juuuuuust right! You gotta start somewhere so start small and maybe just do the snippets you love the most. Don't worry about a complete fic, until you get the bit that started it all in your head jotted down. "Collide" was started by me trying to explain Cullen's upbringing and that's where I wrote him as being a street thief as a young teen. The part where he lifts Hawke's purse is the first thing I wrote. So start with what you love! Having fun is crucial to keeping your motivation.

This is something I've been thinking about with my own writing recently, but from the other direction, feeling like I have too little description. LOL As I worried about this I read a book recently that was almost all description with very little dialogue. It was encouraging to see an author make a different choice so that I could realize... it was ok for me to make my own choice of having less description (as it personally bored me to DEATH and I started skimming).motomotogirl wrote...

To Lola -- one thing you excel at are your little scenes. Perhaps start writing them that way, describing the set up and getting straight to the dialogue. There are lots of ways to share your ideas!
