MMG, I have never cried from playing a video game like I did playing DA:O's ending for the first time. I literally couldn't get myself under control for an hour afterward.
Mass Effect was amazing, but it never elicited even remotely similar emotions from me. Just goes to show -- different strokes, right?
I actually shed manly tears at the end of ME3 and I'm not afraid to admit that. I never cry in games/movies either. For a game to invoke that kind of emotion in me is pretty incredible I would say.
The thing that made ME so emotional is it's the same characters through three games. It's a long journey you share together and that made it more personal for me. I prefer ME's method of storytelling over DA because of that. On the other hand, DA's storytelling keeps it fresh. You'll always see new cultures, new characters, new motives, etc. So they both have their positives/negatives to the way they tell stories. I do not think DA tests my emotions because I haven't devoted 6 years of my life with those characters. I still feel a lot for DA universe, just not like ME. Get what I'm saying?
Also, nice to see you're alive BYT
I think... that for me (this obviously isn't going to be universal) DA:O did the better job of hitting you hard with the cost, the sacrifice involved in saving the world and keeping your loved ones alive. Of course that all depends on the kind of ending that you chose, but Alistair sacrificed himself for me and I was NOT expecting that. As someone who has seen a lot of death in real life, it brought to the surface a lot of buried emotions, and then I had to suffer the indignity of being congratulated on my heroism for the last ten minutes of the game.
<--- cue BYT sobbing like a two year old with no birthday cake
ME3 almost got me there with the extended control ending. But I'm also super weird about that stuff -- the ending of the Notebook actually made me laugh. Like, hard. I've heard that that's an inappropriate response to that movie and it makes me utterly heartless, so don't anyone take my opinions too seriously.
Gratulations!
Yea, I can see what you're saying from DAO. I do agree that it felt like consequences were weighed harder in that game. I remember saying that to myself when I first played it.
I've seen Notebook...
