Agree. He also expressed regret that the Starkhaven mages die, if you go that path.
I've never killed them, so I totally didn't know that! What does he say?
“Ser Thrask said you tried to assist him with the Starkhaven apostates. I’m sorry they didn’t make it.”
It was something like:
"Did you not see them as you came in?" and his tone of voice sounds really spooked and disturbed. The mages get strung up even if you don't want them too, except for Alain if you save him. Samson gets strung up too if you don't help him.
Eek. I dunno. Would it be drunken Alistair all over again?brushyourteeth wrote...

Where do you think Alistair would have stood, were he in Cullen's place dealing with Meredith/Karras/Alrik/Elthina/Feynriel/etc.? What would have been different with him in the Knight-Captain's shoes?
Hmm, good question. Trying to dredge up my memory of Alistair's feelings on the Circle. He was wary of Morrigan as an apostate, but one of the boons he can give as King is to free the Circle, right? The latter always makes me feel that he's a little bit pro-mage-freedom, which seems to me a big difference with Cullen. I just don't think Cullen would be cool with mage freedom unless you had a really good replacement system that protected everyone. But just opening the door and waving goodbye...? Just don't see that. (which is why I think seeing his reaction to a post-Circle world in DA3 would be fascinating. I mean, now every mage is an apostate... or rather, there are no apostates, because no Circles...).
Anyhoo... I suppose since I see Alistair being less wedded to the system, I could see him trying to fix things early on with Meredith by meddling. Also, he doesn't seem to have any particular reverence for chain of command... LOL I see him being a terrible templar. I imagine him getting demoted pretty quickly with Meredith, so in the end having little power with which to do much. But I have no doubt he also would have backed Hawke.
Hmm... do you think he eventually would have turned out like Samson, maybe? But just less sleazy?
... and then speaking of sleaze, do you think he'd get so fed up with his life as a Templar that he'd be partying at the Blooming Rose with the rest of the fellas? (and the er... "young ladies")

Since when does Meredith have any jurisdiction over Samson? He's not a Templar anymore!LolaLei wrote...

... something is rotten in the state of Kirkwall. Somehow I don't imagine Aveline would have been pleased to hear about this.
Of course, if Aveline were Cullen there would be tons of haters saying that she either knew about it and didn't do anything, or she was incompetent for not knowing and a complete monster either way.

I think in Samson's case, it would be because he was complicit in Thrask's plot, which is "templar business." Cullen says something about the reason Samson gets collared.

I'm not gonna lie. I turn them all over all the time, even Alain whether I'm pro-mage or pro-templar. I think I 've played that quest through all of once as a sane, reasonable person that let's people live. It's the one quest that just rubs me the wrong way. I've never understood how they can kidnap your sibling or friend or lover and then expect you not to be angry and not to show up! Doesn't Thrask even say something like, "I had hoped you wouldn't come'? Why wouldn't you show up? They kidnapped someone close to you. I guess by that point of the game I am just sick of all the backstabbing you seem to get from the people you try to help, and from the pro-templar POV, I just don't see how kidnapping someone is going to endear you to their cause. I always think of it as my "Hawke SMASH" quest and go all green on it.R2s Muse wrote...

Do you suppose he knew that Meredith was gonna kill them all? Or do you think maybe he thought she would make the blood mages Tranquil and maybe have Samson arrested after he was interrogated?

Dude.... for QUESTIONING!!!
I am absolutely positive from Cullen's sadness at Samson's death that he in no way expected Meredith to be that severe.
That woman is a positive sociopath. I really, really started to like her in the pro-Templar playthough, but that's what sociopaths do -- they get you to like them. Dis-gust-ing.

I wasn't actually aware that Samson is confirmed as dead. I thought Cullen only responds about the mages, who are strung up outside. Does he say as much?LolaLei wrote...
