During the final battle with Meredith, I know she can end up grabbing Hawke, a companion, or even Cullen before she dies.
I'm curious to know what she says if she grabs Cullen, if anyone knows? o_O
She says the same thing she says to Fenris if she grabs him. I can't recall it exactly but she basic calls him a fool for siding with the mages and thought he of all people would know better... or something like that.

In due time, wouldn't be surprised.
OP sounds very Us Vs. Them, though...
Odd, isn't it. I don't see why it should matter who likes which character.

I usually give Aveline a shield that is immune to knockdown.

Darn, I thought it was an ability that prevented it. Sparking stagger Cullen for all then!
Thread got locked pretty quick too.

Cullen is introduced in Dragon Age: Origins as some shiny-eyed recruit, he doesn't see the danger which mages pose and doesn't know what he's looking for in case of bad mages. Although he has a crush on the female mage character, it's relevant to his characterization because he's someone who doesn't see mages as seperate from mundanes.
By the time you've finally reached the Circle of Magi, everyone is dead ]except[/color] for Cullen. Not only had he survived rigorous torture, he out-lasted his peers when confronted and controlled by blood mages. Although he's hysterical afterwards, it shows that--despite being a recruit--he's devoted and strong, anyone else would've fallen. No longer the shiny-eyed recruit, Cullen understands the danger which mages pose better than anyone.
Come Dragon Age 2, Cullen is re-introduced as having been sent away from the Ferelden Circle to calm him, he's possibly still healing from the events of Dragon Age: Origins and now has a firm understanding that mages are far more dangerous than they appear, something which he shares with Meredith.
Despite this, Cullen shows sympathy and duty to the Circle of Magi and the Templar Order.
He hunts down the missing Templar recruits personally, he ponders the role of the Templar Order in the changing world and come the third act, he'll bring blood mages back to the Circle (despite the zero-tolerance policy), inform Hawke of where the complaints against Aveline originate, question Meredith during Anullement, sides with Hawke when Meredith's lyrium-induced insanity acts up and allows Hawke to leave (if pro-mage).
The hatred of Cullen seems to stem from the fact that most players are blindly pro-mage, loathing the fact that Cullen represents someone who opposes them. Least, that's the impression I get when I often see the "mages aren't like you or me" conversation brought up with improper context.
Fact is:
- Cullen probably wouldn't be introduced as someone who's rabidly anti-mage, he'd probably be sitting in a cross-roads after the events of Dragon Age 2.
- Even if Cullen was rabidly anti-mage, pro-Templar players had to stomache Anders and Merrill. Pro-Mage players didn't have to recruit Fenris.

Yeah, the final point doesn't count for my thoughts, but the rest of it does. Perhaps we should save a copy of it and just copy paste it everytime some makes one of those threads?

Yeah, I think it's easy for us to confuse fact with fiction in terms of the actual screentime he's had and the emotions/actions he's portrayed in-game.

If people didn't feel hate or love for a character, then that character could be classified sometimes as boring or just a very minor character. It makes a game more enjoyable--for me that is, if there were feelings of hate or love--(or simply liking) for a character. I don't know if I get like this for every video game I play, but, being a person who appreciates a good and involved story, seeing different characters, both ones I hate and find a strong liking for, makes me have a greater appreciation for the hard work put into the game by the developers.
When it comes to hating a specific Dragon Age character, I would say in Dragon Age II, I really despise Isabella. She's a backstabbing **** and ****, who disgusts me utterly. However, I won't deny that she is a very...colorful character and brings color to the character. Thus, I respect the writer's decision and have no problem with the way they developed her.

I don't really want to get into a discussion of character hate. But, as far as the Cullen hate, it's usually both. Folks don't like the character. Folks don't like the fans. Some folks don't like the character because of the fans. It's a strange pattern. Most hate threads either start out as or eventually evolve into fan bashing. Every once in a while there's some character discussion in between.Dunquixote wrote...
I haven't looked at the hate threads yet, so, I hope you don't mind me asking a few questions. Is it the fans or Cullen as a character people are ranting about? Are there any "intelligent" discussions or is it simply insult after insult?

It varies. Sometimes it's an open and obvious hate thread aimed at the fans, sometimes it's a thread made by someone who is genuinely curious about why people like him. However, it ALWAYS turns into a flame thread bashing and attacking the fans eventually, sometimes it happens quicker than others though.
There are usually a few replies from people giving good reasons and arguments about why they dislike him, I find those ones the most interesting because I like to hear other peoples opinions and see it from someone elses perspective. Mostly it's just people saying they hate him or dislike him because the fans won't shut up about him, or because they think he's a creepy rapist, or killed a bunch of apprentices (even though those DA:O epilogues were retconned). I guess he may have still killed those apprentices before being sent to Greenfell, but until he tells us that directly we'll never know for sure.

Lol, yeah that too.
I mean, it's not like we've completely convinced ourselves that our theories are facts, but I admit that I tend to look into his motives a lot and I sometimes wonder if maybe I'm mis-remembering things that he actually said/done.

FWIW, I ran across the text from the crazy epilogue in my files, and this still isn't really compatible with going to Greenfell, IMO. Doesn't really seem like an escaped madman would later be set free, Greenfell rehabilitation or no. Also, for the record, it does name Cullen by name.LolaLei wrote...

The young templar Cullen never quite recovered from his ordeal. After months of attempting to convince his superiors that the tower was still a danger, he finally snapped and killed three apprentices before being stopped by his fellow templars. Eventually, Cullen escaped from prison, a madman and a threat to any mage he encountered.

Once the tower was rebuilt, Knight-Commander Greagoir stepped down from his post and retired to a life of private contemplation as a brother in the Chantry. His health failed over time, and after refusing treatment, he perished in his sleep. Knight-Commander Cullen was said to be more strict and less trusting of the mages even than Greagoir was. He ruled the Circle with fear.
