I really want a drunken Qunari companion now. At first I really didn't like the sound of him, Sera or Dorian but the more I think about it the more I think they'd be kinda fun.. I am not remotely interested in Sera, but that being said, their hasn't been a companioin yet that I didn't like on some level...wait, that's not true. I didn't like Tallis, but I don't count her as a true companion b/c she's a DLC...yeah, I count Seb...it's complicated...
When I first heard about Sera I wasn't keen because she was described as a bit of a brat, but it also said she was free spirited and sounded a bit of a wild one which I thought sounded fun. I guess I'm kinda picturing an elven version of Jack but without the anger issues and a better sense of humour... I bet I'm completely wrong.
Iron Bull's description reminds me so much of the Black Whirlwind in Jade Empire, he liked drinking and killing (in that order) but he was a big dope really and quite lovable, which is kinda how I'm imagining this Qunari guy to be.

LOL, There are a multitude of reasons I don't like her, all of which you've addressed and more, but I'm not going to get into it! I'm just going to leave it at: She is the only BioWare character (yeah that includes NPCs) I truly despise and loathe.LolaLei wrote...
Tallis I have mixed feelings about. I liked the silly banter between her and Hawke, but I wasn't keen on how she seemed to be unbeatable in terms of humility, like it didn't matter what you said to her she'd still get the upper hand and make everyone else look like an idiot. Plus the Qun aspect to her personality kinda bored me and seemed very contradictory.
*Edit* And the Valley girl accent felt kinda out of place... not that it can be helped, hell knows I'm bloody awful at accents myself!

What I had actually said was t hat I felt the character was being forced on us a bit considering at that point she still had her DA web series going and then the DLC about her. He said that he bet I and a lot of other women wouldn't be saying that if the Tallis had been a male. I then pointed out that if they had done it with a male character I'd be saying the same thing.

It's like, I absolutely love Angelina Jolie but I thought that film "Salt" she starred in was crap. Doesn't mean I dislike her suddenly because I didn't like the film or character, nor does it mean I'm "threatened" by her because she's hot. I mean, seriously.
The accusation felt dangerously close to the whole "you're just threatened because your worried that your boyfriend fancies her" line that a lot of men like to use against other women. I probably would've flipped my **** if anyone had said that, LOL!

As would I. This is the one and only time I will make this comment. I am not remotely interested in playing with anyone's LARP Mary Sue/Stu, regardless of how famous they are. I already have my own in my protagonist, why would I want someone else's? If that sounds harsh or vain, I don't really care. It is how I feel....Okay, I'm done now. My apologies if I've offended anyone. Ranting over.LolaLei wrote...

I totally get that! There's a certain Dwarf x Alistair pairing that I couldn't give two sh!ts about that a lot of people rave over and I totally don't get it, again it's not my canon version of events.
It's like when people are all like "btw Cullen fans, my protagonist is gonna stab him bwahaha!" I don't care, that's your game and your protagonist, not mine. Same reason why I don't read the comics and just ask for the basic run-down of events instead, because their canons aren't my canons, so it doesn't really interest me aside from the parts that become canon lore.
Don't get me wrong, I like looking at all the custom protagonists people have made in the CC and stuff, but I don't like people forcing their characters down my throats.

I think if you're in the games industry as some sort of celebrity then you're really putting your arse out there to get burnt by essentially playing yourself/a character you've invented that looks like you, simply because everyone's gonna assume you're either 1) arrogant or 2) the company is brown nosing you because they're fans of your work OR you're mates with people making said game.
Even if that's not the case.

Ha ha, I guess that's why the writer's have such a hard time keeping things in canon because so many people play, and so many people play differently. Just look at our earlier discussion over the Ander's rivalmance! Stringing all the possibilities must be nightmarish for whoever is stuck on continuity duty for additional games!

I was chewing my fists because otherwise I would've said something really rude, but basically it's someone elses canon that seems to pop up where ever I am on the internet, and often feels (to me) like it's being forced down my throat... amongst other things that I won't go into on here, lol.
Yeah, I can see why they have to pick some sort of canon for the novels and comics. I think RPG's are definitely tricky things to do, especially when it's so character-centric like BioWare games are. One false move and you've got a riot on your hands (as the ME3 ending fiasco proved!)
Thinking on it further, I guess I can see why DG was so leery about us Cullen fans, for all he knows we could go completely ape sh!t over the smallest thing. Not that we would in here, but others might.

I find that I, myself am quite adaptable to what BioWare brings to the table in terms of their character progressions and changes. Do I hate Anders for blowing up the chantry? No. I either run away with him as a glorious mage Bonnie & Clyde or heartsick, I follow after him to keep saving him from himself. Was I heartbroken that adorable Cullen was tortured to the point of hating all mages enough to want the Right of Annullment in Origins? Yes, but that didn't make me hate the character or feel disappointed in him. It made my heart ache with pity and sorrow for him. And when he returned in DA2 and we watched him change over the course of the game back to a fair and honest man? Of course I loved it! Am I worried about what will happen to him in DAI? No. Because given time and many playthroughs I can come to understand the motivations of a character and why they behaved/acted/said what they did. To me, It's all about shifting perspectives, and that is what I love most about BioWare games. Even the villians have reason for why they do what they do. And I love both the heros and the villians.LolaLei wrote...

Agreed. I believe that whatever they do to Cullen and DA3 in general it'll make sense. Granted DA2 wasn't as in-depth as it could've been, but after several playthrough i've come to really appreciate it for what it is, and despite the fact that I wasn't able to interact with the companions as much as I'd like they were still very developed characters.
Quickly going back to Tallis a minute, I just found a really good article about the whole Mary Sue thing with MotA:
http://ladygeekgirl....m/tag/mary-sue/
I think the writer sums up exactly why people didn't warm to Tallis in the same way that they warmed to Kasumi in ME2 who's quest was very similar to MotA's.

Hell, the only reason why I play as myself in BioWare games at least once is 1) to see how badly I'd **** up in that situation, so by recreating myself as the protagonist it helps me stick to the choices I'd make, rather than picking an easier option. And 2) Because sometimes my chosen LI is really hot and I wanna romance them as myself (because I'm a perv).

Jumping in kinda blind to this convo (have a LOT of pages to catch up on) but it just seems like it's so much easier to connect with the game when you're playing with choices and decisions that you would make yourself. Same thing with their personality and attitude. One of the reasons I have such a hard time re-playing DA2, because you're always aware that you are playing Hawke, with different mood swings depending on which icon you think is cooler looking (I hate that leaf 'diplomatic' and rarely ever chose that attitude purely for that reason)
Not trying to start a whole voiced/silent protagonist debate here (I actually really like the voiced protag, and think Jennifer Hale did an exceptional job as FemShep) but I do really hope they make some drastic changes when it comes to the "personality types" you can play your character as, and it has more specific outcomes rather than just some extra lines of dialogue (which still, is a nice feature considering not many games let you have a chosen personality at all)

Yeah, it's only really once I found the type of Hawke I enjoyed playing (sarcastic male mage Hawke) that I started to really get into the game.
I treat my Hawke as a character all of his own, like I do with the companions which worked well for me as I found myself becoming very attached to him in the same way that I did with the companions. My Warden, on the other hand, I bonded with because she's essentially a character I've created myself, though I admit that I now find her lack of voice jarring because I so desperately want to see her interact with the companions and the world around her and I find it kinda irritating that she's often completely stoney faced during important scenes.

LolaLei, exactly, I do appreciate DA2 for what it is and what they were trying to do, and I find the more I replay it, the more I like it.
Nikki, I have to laugh b/c I just had this conversation with a friend about the voice acting. I wasn't sure about Jennifer Hale when I first played the ME games. I was used to Hawke, but after finishing ME, I realized that I really loved JH's work far better than Hawke. As for personality choices I'd be happy with what we have as long as the lines are delivered well. I felt that Hawke had a lot of lines that sounded insincere to the attitude they were stored under.

I believe the devs have said that they are doing away with the personality thing, so instead whatever "tone/mood" you pick at any given point will be delivered in the dialogue, but won't effect the protagonist's personality, which I think sounds better since no one is always sarcastic/diplomatic/angry 100% of the time. It also means we can play as some nutty bastard who's mood changes constantly.
