The rebel "bad" Templars will probably form a bunch of bases all over Thedas and get their lyrium through the smuggling trade. I imagine the circles getting burnt down probably by extremist rebel mages to prove a point and follow in Anders foot steps. All the good Templars will probably go to the Divine for sanctuary/guidance.

I can see this happen.

I can also see the price of lyrium skyrocketing with drawven merchants and smugglers getting rich off of the chaos.

That's when some smart arse will start selling red lyrium at discount prices or one of the "bad" Templars will stumble across it and all hell breaks loose!

I'm still not sure what the templars  who decide not to split from the Chantry would do. Since Lambert was supported by all 15 Knight-Commanders, then the official position of every Circle of templars is to support the war effort. So, in a sense the "rebel" templars would be the ones who still support the Chantry, and these would likely be apostate templars, kicked out of the Order. Where do they go? What do they do? Guard the Chantries anyway? Start farming?

Are you sure about that?  I need to grab my copy of Asunder but I remember it ending with Lambert calling the 15 K-Comms together and secretly stating that those who appear to have doubts will be replaced. So, he isn't supported by the existing 15 K-Comms. Instead, Lambert is orchestrating a situation where he will have 15 K-Comms in place who will split from the Chantry and enforce a military crackdown on mages. Minor nitpick...

Well, he already had all 15 K-C's in a room and they unanimously voted in favor of the split.  He then guessed that some had private reservations and those would be replaced. But, the official position of each Circle was to support Lambert, even if he likely used fear and intimidation in some cases, so it's a fait accompli. So, my point isn't so much that individually each K-C thinks it's a great idea, but that every Circle in Thedas has signed their name to this effort and so will follow.

"Fifteen Knight-Commanders in one room, and not a single one  had raised a voice in protest. They all knew what needed to be done. Those few that held private reservations would either remain silent or be replaced."  (p 411)

Good question where the rebel templars go, especially if they need lyrium.  :pinched:

My guess is that many will go guard Chantries (and get lyrium that way).

Ah, that could be... I wonder what the rest of the templars will do about that...

What if Cullen was one of the 15? I mean, he's probably standing in as Knight-Commander now that Meredith has shuffled off her mortal coil. :-S

Given that they're the majority of templars, that would be a pretty penny the lyrium smugglers could make. Yeah, I bet they make their own separate deal for the lyrium, with the smugglers or maybe even with the powers that be.

Oh good!  You have the line handy!

Yes, Lambert gets everyone to support his position but no doubt there has been shuffling in the ranks to make sure that Templar leadership in the Circles falls behind him.

It is an interesting mess.

Could be. Or maybe he's languishing in prison for being insubordinate. ;)  I thought of this as I was reading it, and thought, "Could Cullen be there? Naw, Cullen would have said something!"

The bit with Lambert and the 15 Knight-Commanders happens in 9:40. A lot could have happened to Kirkwall's Circle leadership between 9:37 and 9:40, and the same for Cullen.  I can think of more reasons for him being replaced, demoted, kicked out, or quiting than I can for him officially being promoted and remaining as a Knight-Commander in 9:40.

So much TBD...

Right. Given how monolithic Templar hierachy seems to be, I'd see most Circles falling in line. But inevitably, there will be some individual templars who don't follow. I just wonder what happens to those. They could flock to the Chantries, if they're allowed free will... or they could just be thrown in prison for not following orders. I sorta see a whole lotta court marshalls going around...

Thinking about it, he still turned against Meredith and either lets a mage-supporting Hawke escape or allows a bunch of apostates to stay free with Hawke so I'm not sure Lambert would want Cullen on board anyway... perhaps he's been locked up in prison for treason within the Order or because they consider him to be a potential threat/abandoner.

Unfortunately, this is my personal head canon right now, despite Cullen as Knight-Commander featuring my fic. :( No matter which side he chose, he disobeyed a direct order and mutineed. I see that being a big deal... but still with the potential for a happy ending. <3

It's something they haven't covered properly in Dragon Age before. I mean, sure some of our characters have been locked up before but never for long and certainly not in a grotty horrible setting in which we see a cut scene of them being tortured/chained up and taunted.

And, honestly, not something I think we will see. No one wants to watch that. The story will take place when he is rescued or released.
