I have a Cullen centric question for you all. I'm having trouble with this part of my fic. I have plenty for after this point but I'm stuck on something and maybe you all can help.

Ok: What kind of idea do you think Cullen might come up with to keep a mage Hawke under closer supervision - strictly his, the Order doesn't know - without resorting to arresting her? I thought maybe she could come to the Gallows every so often under the guise of "training" so that new recruits could learn basic forms from her - she does fight, shes a rogue - since the templars lost several knights here and there... But then I was worried that it was too unrealistic for Hawke and how she likes to traipse about everywhere and Cullen can't just follow her around. So I'm stumped. Any ideas?

1. He offers to pay her handsomely for the training.
2. The training strokes her ego.
3. She has a crush on him, so of course she'll come.

Both of the first two fit with Hawke's personality IMO, although perhaps slightly less a diplo!Hawke... but it still fits. Hawke is always interested in making money, and she does know she's good at what she does. She has an ego, even if you're writing/playing a nice Hawke.

My only question would be, how does getting her to come train the recruits from time to time help him keep an eye on her? He would literally have to follow her or have her followed or pay people near her to tell him what she's up to.

Hmmm the only thing I would wonder is why a templar would ask a noble like Hawke to come train. People would wonder why Cullen would go out of his way to hire someone that is not a templar, unless Hawke had a special skill which could give the Templars an edge. Aveline brought the mabari to the barracks because he's a war dog and could give the guards know-how in a fight. Templars already have Hunters, which I assume are a specialized rogue since they can pop up behind you and stab you in the back. Try thinking along those lines. :)

Hawke would go either to save herself from an outright arrest, or to save her apostate friends, etc. It depends or your Hawke. It could be a compromise/blackmail: "Come train our recruits so I can keep an eye on you and you can give them an edge, and I won't arrest you/your friends." The blackmail would make some sort of sense in Act 1 unless Hawke brought up the deal herself.

Maybe to arrange family meetings between Hawke and Bethany? That way Hawke can see her sister. If it's after Leandra's death, it would make sense so the sisters could mourne together, and Cullen could keep an eye on both of them.

Actually I am busy creating four canons right now! And carefully writing down in Word all the improtant things they do, such as save or kill Merrill's clan. That way if, say, something occurs if you DO save the clan, versus something that occurs if you DON'T, I'll know I'll have at least two different imports to cover that.

But in my heart, my canon Hawke's (I have two) are Nemanja Hawke and Eirik Hawke. The sad thing is, I can't remember all the choices they made. I just know Nemanja was a caring soul who was the rock of his family and likely did everything "right," but he was one of my firsts, so I may have done something without knowing I could get around it (like killing Merrill's clan). Eirik is a sarcastic guy who is kind of on the templar's side but also wasn't down with, ya know, outride genocide at the end of the game there lol He definitely made some more questionable calls.

I've been writing down all of my Hawke's actions, too. When I realized that I couldn't remember what decisions my earlier Hawkes made it started to really bother me. So I tried accessing the "Post-Campaign" save on my completed Hawkes and looking at the Journal. It worked! I wrote down all of the important decisions and added them to my file. Now I don't have to replay a Pro-Templar run. :D

WOW! Thanks for that suggestion! :D I will still complete these four playthroughs, but now Nemanja and Eirik will definitely be my first imports! Very cool; can't believe I never thought of that xD

Thank you for the suggestions. To answer some questions: Hawke saved Cullen's backside in my story and she has already been working with the Order from time to time so Cullen, doesn't arrest her when she uses her meager healing talents to keep him from dying all over a cavern floor. He's having a conflict of morals about it, wanting to leaver her alone since she saved him but not feeling he can because she doesn't want to be a mage and that concerns him. I really wanted the idea for how he can see her more frequently to be his. He knows he can't see her every day but his sense of duty isn't comfortable with it being months in between those times. So that's what I'm trying to resolve but as Motomotogirl pointed out: why would Cullen hire someone who was outside of the Order? It would look funny to everyone else. It's a plot point I'm struggling with. The timing is not long before she becomes Champion but Leandra is still alive. And Carver is the surviving twin. So far, Hawke and Cullen cross paths kind of frequently because of the Qunari issue but it was two months between interactions. And it was only after that he learned something that concerns him...

I just had a few thoughts though!

1. Carver and the contingent of knights he was with are captured by some nefarious bad guys and needs rescuing.

2. Elthina petitions Hawke to be a benefactor for the Order since the Chantry is having difficulty funding it because tithes have shrunk and/or disappeared as Kirkwallers lose confidence in them for their lack of any effort to do something about the Qunari. So Hawke agrees and is always up Meredith's **** to make sure her money is being properly spent. Not my favorite idea though...

3. Cullen begins to hear rumors about things being done to mages but is stonewalled when he goes to Meredith for answers so he asks Hawke to pretend to be a mage, even though she actually is, and brings her in for undercover investigation, Meredith isn't fooled but doesn't stop their plan because she needs the men routed out of her order but not even she knows who they are.

I dunno... I really want this bit ion there but I'm at a loss as to how to make it viable. Unless she becomes the new lyrium convoy captain because their supply lines keep getting interrupted by bandits or something, I'm at a loss. Maybe I should drop it altogether...

Aaagh! That's so hard to look at! Poor Anders! He looks sad and defeated. I hope we do get to learn more about the Rite of Tranquility because in DAO it seemed to be a Big Deal that required planning and preparation and the First Enchanter. Of course they could have just been making a big deal out of it when, really, the procedure itself is simple. In DA2 it seemed like Tranquil were popping up overnight and Alrik seemed to hint that he could just do it if he wanted. The brand is also another anomaly. I don't recall it being done to Tranquil in Ferelden in DAO. Or maybe it was hidden? I just thought Kirkwallers liked displaying who had been a naughty mage for all to see. Or to keep mages from impersonating Tranquil - though why any would want to is beyond me. Could also be to keep track of Tranquil mages. Perhaps, their phylacteries don't work once it's done? Maybe? I dunno. So many inconsistencies! Curse you Bioware! hehehehehe....

In DAO, there was a book in Kinloch Hold that mentions how untrained mages can overextend their powers and drain themselves down to a point where they're instantly cut off from the Fade. The magical backlash usually kills them. So, based on that, in my fic, I have Tranquility portrayed as something that can be done by templars. And part of the Rite is to use a lyrium brand or some kind of lyrium overload to "force open", for lack of a better way to say it, a mage's connection to the Fade. Their inner spiritual stitches that join them, to the Fade are temporarily overcharged and before there's a backlash or a demon coming through, the templar uses an ability - maybe a really strong Drain - to draw all of that magic out. As a result, the "pathways" for magic are basically burnt out. Or the soul is ruined, like Anders' lobotomy analogy. But that would be irreversible so I go with the burnt fuse idea instead. That's how I've canonized it in my head anyway. I'm probably way off though. =D

Edit: Love the art posts gals! :D R2, your commission looks crazy good! Can't wait to see it!

I hope we find more about the Rite of Tranquility during DA3.  I mean it would follow on nicely from Pharamond discovering how to reverse it in Asunder.

Samara, I don't think I picked that book up!  It does sound quite horrifying.

Re the Xbox1, is it really going to be around the £600 mark?  Blimey that's a lot for a console.  Better to invest in a pc, I think.  The great thing is that you are able to play quite a few new pc games with the Xbox controller (like Skyrim and Bioshock Infinite).  Plus, the 360 is still a great console.

If anyone is thinking of upgrading or buying a new pc, I found an interesting article in the Guardian which helps with choosing the right components -

www.guardian.co.uk/technology/gamesblog/2013/jan/30/build-a-gaming-pc-2013

Newegg also have some really handy videos on Youtube too.

I think it was on the first table in the library that you come to...? Not sure... but I recall reading about it being possible for a mage to draw too much energy from the Fade and it overloads them or something. It didn't sound good... Alright folks, I'm turning into a pumpkin. Must get some sleep! Goodnight.

Even though I'm a hardcore consoler, I admit having a good gaming PC would benefit me. The only problem I have is money, even though building a gaming PC is cheaper than buying one. Thanks for linking that article, it brought some insight to what I should do. =]

BTW I took a nap this afternoon and I had a Cullen dream. He was refusing to submit to my command simply because I was SHORT. Yes, even in my dreams I remain 5ft 3". In response I tackled and pinned Cullen to the ground. He seemed convinced at that point. ...Then we ate chicken soup.

Talking about Tranquil Anders. I have made friends with a Japanese fanartist on Tumblr. She has a very distinkt anime style. http://emanonix.tumblr.com

There's a story that goes with the first. Anders doesn't know why he is crying. He says: Maybe it's for the same reason that Fenris is crying? I thought that was sweet. (You know, because tranquils don't have feelings)

(Ps I also love her, because whenever I write a snip of fic, she will draw a picture to go with it. Isn't that AMAZING!  I also write snippets for her at times, especially the smutty ones she draws. *hehe*)

I'm thinking its part of a Templars task and role to oversee the Mages. That means that killing a Mage who fails the Harrowing or making one who is weak into a Tranquil is their job. We did know Cullen was part of that, because that is where we met him.

The world of Thedas is so different from ours, it's hard to understand sometimes that this is the solution they have for this problem. What else can they do? If you train as a Templar this will be part of your training and you will be influenced and come to think of it as the 'right thing to do'. It's just the way things are and have been for hundreds of years.

So while these things can be debated by Mages and Templars and everyone else, during a normal workday this is routine. Not performing ones duty means that you loose your job. A job you have trained for and been 'indoctrinated' into since you where a teenager.

Yea I figured the portability would be an important deciding factor for you. I hope you can find one at a good price that lets you enjoy it! I got a laptop for around $650 that let me run Origins, though it just recently broke after 3 years of frequent use.

I really would recommend looking at refurbished products. Most of the time they are brand new, or pretty close, for a much more reasonable price. And they come w/ good warranties on the off chance something happens.

ThanksNikki! I'll look into that. I don't suppose you know of good resellers? We have Fry's electronics here in Cali but it's hit and miss what you'll find.

I found my desktop at Best Buy, found it online and they shipped it to the store nearest me for pick up. If you have someone that knows how to build computers, you can buy parts from Tiger Direct and have them put it together for you (make sure you have someone that really knows what they're doing if you go this route) I think Tiger Direct might also sell whole laptops though if you want to check that website out. Then there's always Amazon, but make sure you don't have to pay for shipping wherever you end up buying it from. When you spend that amount of money, they usually offer free shipping.

Samara, does Hawke have to go to the Gallows?  Maybe Cullen could just start dropping in unannounced to check up on her, instead of leaving it to her to come "check in" with him at assigned times. He's the Knight-Captain, so no one is probably monitoring his day to day activities, so perhaps he doesn't initially think he needs an ironclad reason to stop in to talk to a professional colleague. Particularly one who knows so much about the city and the Qunari, etc. But, of course, he's not the sharpest sword in the scabbard, so folks  could start to wonder if there's something romantic there, instead of guess the real reason, that she's a mage. That could make it wonderfully awkward all around that "people are starting to talk." Even Leandra, maybe.

Anyhoo, just an idea.

Today is my Thursday too, and I've been wondering the same thing. Is something going on, or is it just time zone-ness?

is Hawke a noble at this point? Because he could use a PR-type excuse to keep tabs on her. It wouldn't hurt for him to work under the guise of 'keeping up appearances' with the nobles to gain Templar support. It would be a logical thing for Cullen to do, since Meredith has pretty much become a recluse. The Templars already have a dodgy reputation and since Kirkwall is the main seat of Templar power in the East, I would imagine that improving relations with the nobility would be in the order's best interests. It has a sort of political motivation to it.

No one is certain. The official EA twitter said that June 6th there would be an E3 preview. They later used the exact same sentence, but said the preview would be June 10th at 1pm PDT, which is the EA Press Conference at E3, the day before the official show starts on June 11.

To me, it seems that the EA twitter folks screwed up, however, there is a gametrailers show on Spike TV today that could *maybe* have some DA3 E3 info. It takes place the night of June 6th, 1am EDT.

SO, tl;dr: There might maybe, possibly be an E3 preview on the evening of Thursday, June 6th on Spike TV. My guess is probably not.

edit: More accurate: Tonight at 1am EDT:
GameTrailers TV With Geoff Keighley
"E3 2013 Kick-off Special"
The debut of some of the hottest game trailers, before the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

My guess: No DA3. The devs told us watch Monday's press conf, so my money's on that for the DA3 reveal.

Thanks R2! No spike tv here so I have to rely on news from you folks. God, I'm getting so impatient I have to keep myself of the Internet :]

Edit: Thanks for the update. I guess I need to restrain myself and patiently wait untill Mon conference. Maybe they will spill something tomorrow via twitter, though I guess they will try to be as tight lipped as possible since the actual reveal is so close.

I've been of the mind that they were always planning to show us a decent amount of footage, both CGI and gameplay, as they have waited so long to show us anything at all. Can't go off of previous marketing techniques that they used, as they seem to have adopted a completely new method w/ this "show not tell" mantra.

I really hope they give us a big meaty chunk of stuff to analyze to death (cause you totally know we're gonna) On the plus side, I think I read that they are even planning to show us even more after the inital reveal at E3! So it sounds like we will have plenty to talk about for the next month at the very least.
