Ha! The writer that I think might have done Cullen's script/story (if he's a companion/LI), didn't like Anders because he annoyed her, so she killed him. I guess we can safely assume that Cullen won't be an irritating sod, motivated solely by the Templars plight if he's a companion lol!

Unless she's vehemently pro-templar...

Nah she romanced him lol.

I totally didn't romance Anders. Fenris was more my style.  And I was pro-mage. Just not pro-Anders. :)

LOL Thanks for setting the record straight. :D

Were your ears burning over our Cullen VO session discussion?? Care to... comment? (*subliminal*please*please*please*subliminal*)

I lurk in all the character forums. :) Unfortunately, when it comes to commenting, I can't say anything either way. Sorry!

I might question how pro-mage one could be if one was against Anders... but I suppose anyone who'll still fight the templars is useful enough in the battle, yes?

The reason my Hawke killed Anders in the end is that he put her sister, and every other mage in Kirkwall, in danger. My rogue  took responsibility for Anders, and ended him right there. That's how I role-played it, anyhow.

Might I actually ask a question that's hopefully not revealing anything unrevealable? We are terribly curious around here about the VO process, being a character thread and all. It must be amazing seeing an actor bring your words to life. Do you, the writer, get to ... I dunno, direct or prompt at all, the actor to get the characterization right, or is there a "director" who does that sort of thing?

We have a person who directs the actors that come in. Mostly the writers are there to clarify any comments we wrote in our notes, or provide pronounciation, or lore facts. Stuff like that. But our people who direct the actors interact with them the most.

] One more quick question, if I may.  How much time does the voice recording part take for a major companion? I always imagine someone like Alistair, who talks for like half the game must be weeks and weeks, whereas smaller parts, like say, DA2!Cullen must be much shorter. I heard that such scheduling might have played a role in, for example, Greg Ellis no longer voicing Anders since he was so busy.

I'm not sure what went on with the Anders VO, I was interning at the time so I wasn't as involved. I know major characters will have multiple sessions, while minor characters can usually be done in one.

Come on , she didn't say anything that reveals he's in the game or not, did she?
Maybe it's all a big surprise with a lot of teasing, hmm?
Cully is too adorable to not to be a companion!{smilie}

A pretty face isn't enough. Writing makes the character. I realize that devs have opinions just like everyone else, but most are professional enough to keep whatever biases they hold off the forums. A character like Cullen takes a lot of subtlety to do well. Without it, it might be better if he wasn't in the game at all.

Don't let me dampen your spirits, though! News is news, right?

Are you saying I'm being biased/unprofessional? I don't get this post.

I don't see what her opinions on Anders would have to do with whether Cullen's character would be written well or not (if she even wrote that script for Cullen, there's no proof, it was just me speculating and trying to make conversation flow in here.)

Oh, that isn't my opinion on Anders. That's my character's opinion. If I played as myself I would have probably painted my face half blue and mooned the templars since my personal beliefs are very western and very liberal. Freedom for all! And so forth.

Thanks for dropping in and giving us some of your time, Tonia! This is history-making. Immagine inviata
Don't mind some of the posters here. Things have a tendancy to get kind of negative lately. I blame the President.

So since you're dropping in, can we infer that you're a Cullen fan yourself, or at least someone who finds his character interesting? Do you have a favorite Cullen scene or fan art?  Immagine inviata

Thanks for all your hard work on The Next Thing - you're making something that we know we're going to love so we'll always be big fans of yours for that!

My first playthrough on Origins was the female Amell. I thought Cullen was ridiculously cute when my character flirted with him. There's some amazing fanart out there of Cullen, I really like Aimo's work when it comes to him.

It is ridiculously gorgeous, I can tell you that much. If you search Frostbite 2, you'll see some great environment shots.

I hadn't realised that the team had been working on it for 2 years lol.

Holy  smokes, two years?
Is it really coming out at the end of 2013, I went you the blog that you guys posted up here and didn't see anything, unless I'm blind. lol

Yeah Mark Darrah said in his post. There should be a link to it on one of the previous pages in here.

Wow, that long? Doesn't feel like it at all. Guess that's a good indication!

Haha, unfortunately, no. Mark pretty much summed up everything in his blog that can be talked about. But really, I can't wait for when more is announced, it's all pretty exciting stuff.

What's insane is I read this friend's response on here, before I read it on Twitter. This friend is a hardcore Cullen fan, so I naturally went there when I saw her sketch. :)

OMG, Tonia, your ears must have been burning again!! You always tend to show up when we talk about you...

LOL Would love to see some sketches of  young Cullen. Fun to imagine what he used to be like, idealistic young sod.

BTW, did you see our Cullen forum banner, lovingly crafted by littlenikki a few pages back?

I did see that, it was pretty awesome. Nice photoshop work!

So Tonia, I know David Gaider has said in the past that there isn't an official backstory on Cullen, other than the obvious stuff, Broken circle story, he's Fereldan, simple stuff from his .chr file. But if you start writing a character, Cullen or any other minor character in the game, as a writer, do you ever find yourself sorta auto-filling the background on them? How do you manage things like that when there's multiple writers working on the same storylines?

So much documentation. Before we start writing the actual dialogue, we write up the plan first, and pitch it to the other writers and various leads. That way, everyone has a good idea about the character and what is going on. Plus, we're all in the same office, so if one of us has to write someone else's character, we just go and kick the owner's chair until they tell us what we need to know.

Don't want to get you in trouble or anything but will we be getting another Mabari this time round? I just love Dog (I always name them Dog)

I can't answer that one. :) Dog is a good name. I usually name my mabari Rufus. I have no idea why.
