I'm hoping that he didn't visit a prostitute. Maybe he shagged a barmaid after a boozy night in one of the taverns? Or maybe he slept with one or two of the female Templars and they just used each other to relieve sexual frustration once or twice whilst he was still in the Circle Tower?

Been reading, just haven't had time to post. HAD to jump in and add my vote for more stuttering! It's way too cute. I would think that by now, Cullen would have SOME kind of experience. And, remember how Wynne was talking about the mage's making all kinds of wine and stuff? Maybe they got the Templar's drunk at some point. I really hope we get to find out!

ohhh man - a Chantry sister? Heehee indeed! ;)
There was always the Spoiled Princess. Never saw many girls there but that doesn't mean there weren't any.
Of course if Cullen was a virgin in DA:O I'm betting he's still a virgin now. The way those desire demons basically mind-raped him would probably be enough to put him off sex for awhile, poor thing.

So he had reach and she had flexibility? Bwahaha. Image IPB

So, I imagine, at a minimum, the obligatory awkward fumble at some point in his youth. Perhaps even something that was so distasteful (drunk or at the brothel) or forbidden (blocking out thoughts of Amell/Surana with another mage or, hee hee, a sister), that he doesn't want to think or talk about it. It also could be something that gave him the, "That was it?!?" kind of reaction about sex. Then he could be set up nicely for our PC to rock his world and show him how it should be done. Image IPB

Kinloch Hold was Cullen's first posting, right? Unlike Kirkwall's Gallows, Ferelden's Circle is kind of out in the middle of nowhere. Off-duty templars could cross the lake to the Lake Calenhad docks, but they could not exactly head into Denerim for a night at the Pearl. So Cullen may have a hard time reconciling his ideas about what a templar should do on his off-duty hours with what Keran and Wilmod get up to. You'll see Thrask in the Blooming Rose at some point (and Emeric?), so it doesn't seem to be limited to recruits sowing wild oats.

Good point, although the once or twice we see Emeric or Thrask discreetly climb the stairs in the Rose contrasts greatly with Wilmod and Keran's carousing ("Wilmod's been here a lot. You sure he has time to be a Templar?" haha)

I kind of like the idea that he womanized for a year or two and then made some kind of personal vow of celebacy. He obviously respects women A LOT and doesn't feel comfortable taking his thoughts there now, regardless. I'd like a virgin Cullen too. Or a Cullen who'd had a pretty sloppy first experience. Okay, I'd take Cullen just about any which way. Image IPB

That's what Seb done wasn't it? Shagged around a lot and then vowed Celebacy?

Yeah, though he did that as Prince of Starkhaven, so of course he was a total player.

If that's Cullen's situation, let's hope he's easier to talk out of it. Image IPB

That or our protagonist would have to take on a job as an apostitute!

... I wonder, if Cullen did frequent the Blooming Rose, did he request to roleplay "The naughty Mage and the big bad Templar" ?

Oh man. Somehow I think that would hit a little too close to home for Cullen to find it very sexy, but once he loosens up I bet he'd totally play "The inquisitive Arishok and the timid Viddithari"   Image IPB

It was pretty easy, except that it seemed to take FOREVER for my profile to update with the new character portrait.

Templars aren't sworn to celibacy, though. They can even marry, although I'm not sure what happens when there are children involved.

I vaguely remember DG saying that the templar order had some kind of a prohibition against fraternization, so that would kind of rule out Cullen having an encounter with another templar. Not that many templars would take that seriously, but Cullen would.

So, let's see a show of hands... figuratively speaking. Five choices, and if you don't see your own headcanon, pick the closest.

1) Cullen is a virgin. "With one thing and another... you know. I mean, I like girls... young ladies... but... Can we talk about something else, please?"

2) Cullen had a fling with a barmaid/village girl/childhood friend's sister, but he had to go back to work. "There was a girl once but... it didn't work out. She didn't understand that a templar has to go where he's told - do what he's told - and that was the end of it."

3) Cullen sowed his wild oats a while ago and is living a life of atonement now as a result of it. "Before I became a templar? You don't want to hear about that. No, really, you don't. I can't speak of the things I did without blushing... Please don't make me talk about it."

4) Cullen had a single, humiliating experience while drunk and has sworn never to speak of it again.

5) Cullen lost his innocence to a prostitute and the memory shames him to this day.

I'm going with number 1. I kinda like the idea that he really has no idea what he's doing.

Well I wasn't saying that Templars take a vow of celibacy - just that Cullen may have made a personal one.

Really any of those options work for me, though we're leaving out the option that he may have actually had a really good sexual experience but still felt guilty about it afterward. I can kind of see that being the case too.

Yeah, I think I'd personally lean toward something like a combination of this, 4 or 5. I don't imagine him being Sebastian, for lack of a better description, and being the reformed rake.  With his hangups, I'd see it more like one or maybe two bad experiences, whatever they may be. The neighbor's daughter that one time and he feels bad, drunk or prostitute and he feels bad. It just wasn't that great, so he feels bad. Obviously emphasis on the feeling bad  part.

Or, he could be a virgin. That would also fit and be interesting the more think about it. I suppose there are ways to do it so it's different from Alistair. Like, he still feels like he shouldn't have sex, no matter how he feels about you. Alistair was cool with it, so long as it was with someone he loved and respected and all that stuff. Cullen could potentially be an even harder nut to crack.

Hmm... challenge accepted! :wizard:

Sorry, I misunderstood about the celibacy thing.

The only problem I have with Cullen having had a good experience is that this is Cullen we're talking about. Good things don't really happen to him, poor thing. That's one of the reasons I'm hoping that he's romanceable in the next thing. I'd like to see something in his life not suck. Or not like that, anyway.

But the choices above don't preclude him having a nice time of it (especially not #2). They just didn't end as well as they could have done, which makes sense, or he wouldn't be single now. He doesn't seem to be the kind of guy who walks out on a relationship unless there is a really compelling reason why he must.

So, food for thought... and hear me out! I once had an idea that he had a "regular" at the Blooming Rose... or maybe somewhere else, like just an enterprising business woman working out of her house. Not someone tawdry (like the lewd girls at the Rose who make him blush) and not someone who he was in love with, but some steady, almost maternal woman who was a stable, comforting presence in his life. He was paying her to sleep with him... yeah, but she was almost courtesan-ish in how she sorta counseled him and nurtured him. So, sort of like a Firefly 'Verse companion, and what he really paid for was companionship, not necessarily sex. Someone to drive away the loneliness from isolation in Kirkwall (this was even before we had that big group think about how ostracized he might be by his fellow templars).

Still not sure what I think about it... but throwing it out there. It's a way in which he would still know what he's doing but still be uncomfortable around blowsy and lewd prostitutes and completely unfamiliar with true courtship and love. (so, yes, a paradox... ;) )

That's definitely a possibility, although I don't know that he would ever admit it to anyone in DA3 so we'd probably never find out if he did lol.

You know, maybe this is TMI but I'm someone that waited till I was married to have sex and, despite what people may think, we're not all alike. Image IPB So Cullen and Alistair can both be virgins and it totally doesn't mean that their romances have to be incredibly similar. Alistair was pretty timid and nervous about his first time. Maybe once Cullen's fully locked-in and in love with you he's like really, really eager? Like pin you up against the wall or carry you off to the bed eager? Maybe once he knows it's *right* he loses all his hangups and is just really into it. I know I was - muahahaha Image IPB

I'm trying to imagine how that initial conversation establishing their "agreement" would go.

.... I think I'd need some more help believing it, which isn't to say it doesn't fit Cullen - just that my knowledge of him is admittedly pretty limited. Like Lola said, he could be doing anything and we'd never know because he'd probably never tell us!

I have a question for you guys:

Is Cullen someone you could rivalmance?

(of course they're not doing those in DAIII but I still think it's an interesting question) - Could Cullen be with someone who was anti-Chantry, radically pro-mage or pro-blood magic, or generally just a jerk? Would you be interested in romancing him that way if he was?
