Re-read the Litany of Adralla part. All it does is dispel the invisibility magic Cole was using. He fades away of his own accord after he realizes what he is, after the big fist fight with Lambert. I used to think Lambert was messing with them, but I now I think he just telling it like it is. Cole is a "poor, stupid spirit" trying "so hard to pretend you were one of us, pretend you were real, that you forgot what you really were."

I still don't know how they'd introduce Cole as a companion... if he is one. It seems as though he'd be a real tricky one to do.

You know... reading back through Justice's dialogue, he makes it sound like spirits don't have emotions, but demons do. Of course, he has his own biases since he also admits he doesn't really know what demons are. But... maybe again, demon!Cole was originally a spirit and became so touched and saddened by what happened to Cole that he developed his own emotions, for lack of a better word. Maybe that's how he start on his road to the dark side?  

Heck, maybe he was a spirit of compassion or something originallly.

yeah, this baffles me. I mean, we hear that demons need humans to experience our world, but then we see desire demons and whatnot pop into our world all the time where we presumably fight them in their native form, right? Maybe there is such a thing as a shapeshifting demon, pretending to be human.

Well, Cole is pretty emo as it is.

DG has also said definitively that if Anders is dead, he's dead. I doubt we'll see him again except as an optional side quest, if at all.

i kinda sorta doubt they will realease any kind of companion/ characters info in game at this "early " stage but hey if they did i def wouldnt complain

Coming to this conversation late... still really sick... but have to say I disagree with you all Cole is definitely not a demon (in my opinion; do I have evidence, ummmmm, *looks sideways*). Also, the chapter where Lambert confronts him and Rhys, and Cole disappears; this is from Rhys' point of view... Rhys in that moment is immediately no longer able to see Cole. This does not strictly mean that Cole made himself invisible OR lost his corporeal form. Only that Rhys suddenly couldn't see him.

I think Cole is far, far more complicated than a mere spirit or demon, or a possessed person.

This sounds familiar, but I can't find it. All I ran across was what DG said about demon possession in his Thedas UK interview, which name checks Asunder. He implies that Cole is a demon but that Rhys just doesn't know it.

True... hence my use of the word "implies."

I do wish I remembered where that thread is, tho, because I wouldn't be surprised if Cole is yet some new, "special snowflake" kind of demony thing. I personally  still go with 'demon,' in the sense that he's some denizen of the Fade,  now a fish out of water.
