Aha!
"There was a Cole," he whispered. "You forgot him in that cell, and I heard his cries when no one else would. I went to him, and held his hand in the darkness until it was over. When the templars found him, they erased everything to hide their shame... and I was helpless to act." Sorrow, and perhaps even regret, crossed the young man's face, but only for a moment. "I'm not helpless any longer."
Hm, sorrow. Maybe that's what he is the spirit/demon of sorrow?
I wonder how he ended up turning into Cole then? If his body was found?

@Lola that's what I'm thinking, that the demon or spirit was traumatized, but my question is whether a demon can be traumatized. My theory sort of hinges on it lol.

More importantly, how did a spirit take on the form of a human and presumably become fully actualised, rather than... ghostly looking.

Despair demon maybe?
@R2 What do you think Lambert meant by that line?

Shapeshifting maybe? I mean they can do it in the Fade presumably the more powerful they are they can probably do it in the "real" world.LolaLei wrote...

I imagine they become corporeal like a demin does when they cross the Fade.

I still don't know how they'd introduce Cole as a companion... if he is one. It seems as though he'd be a real tricky one to do.
How do you mean?

You know... reading back through Justice's dialogue, he makes it sound like spirits don't have emotions, but demons do. Of course, he has his own biases since he also admits he doesn't really know what demons are. But... maybe again, demon!Cole was originally a spirit and became so touched and saddened by what happened to Cole that he developed his own emotions, for lack of a better word. Maybe that's how he start on his road to the dark side?Danny Boy 7 wrote...

Heck, maybe he was a spirit of compassion or something originallly.

yeah, this baffles me. I mean, we hear that demons need humans to experience our world, but then we see desire demons and whatnot pop into our world all the time where we presumably fight them in their native form, right? Maybe there is such a thing as a shapeshifting demon, pretending to be human.Danny Boy 7 wrote...

DG has also said definitively that if Anders is dead, he's dead. I doubt we'll see him again except as an optional side quest, if at all.LolaLei wrote...

I think Cole is far, far more complicated than a mere spirit or demon, or a possessed person.

This sounds familiar, but I can't find it. All I ran across was what DG said about demon possession in his Thedas UK interview, which name checks Asunder. He implies that Cole is a demon but that Rhys just doesn't know it.LolaLei wrote...

LOL. MG, now that you've read Asunder, do you still wanna romance Cole now that you've seen what his personality is like etc?

I do wish I remembered where that thread is, tho, because I wouldn't be surprised if Cole is yet some new, "special snowflake" kind of demony thing. I personally still go with 'demon,' in the sense that he's some denizen of the Fade, now a fish out of water.

Yes!!!He's so sweet and adorable. I just wanna make a strong manly PC to take care of him and give him kisses and snuggle him at night xDDD

As a Public Service Announcement, I'll just post up a reminder of what the writers had to say about hugging Cole...
Tonia Laird wrote...
Cole is quite stabby... I'm not sure hugging the guy is the best idea in Thedas...

There were many a time in Asunder where Rhys was hugging Cole or Cole was crying into his shoulder.
I don't think Rhys necessarily makes the best example, when it comes to wise and considered actions. [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/wink.png[/smilie]
Does make we wonder what Cole would be like as a companion. I'd feel less creeped out if the victimized child persona were replaced with his self-aware 'demon' one.
