Well, that's a start at least. It's a shame that those Cullen threads keep turning nasty. Some of them have some legitimate comments and points that are worthy of discussion.

The unfortunate thing, however, is that many (if not most) base their dislike of the character on whether or not they think Cullen is "good" or "bad." They do not base their interest or lack of interest on the WRITING of Cullen's character... whether he is well-written or not.
No, they are simply unable to appreciate a well-written character, and instead take personal offense at something a character does. It could be the nature of an RPG; less intelligent (oh yes I went there *snickers*) players cannot divorce themselves from their player character. Cullen said he would have killed the mage Warden if necessary, so they take personal offense.
It's like talking to freshmen, and not the smart freshmen, either. *rolls eyes*

I wonder how many people realize that Cullen and PTSD? They seem to think Cullen should be able to pick himself right back up, but back then there were no actual treatments other than being sent on a vacation; but then you're thrown right back into the mess.
Exactly. Had he shown up in DA2 being completely fine and dandy then it would be a sign of crap writing. There's a good reason why the poor guy is messed up.
I'm pretty sure they'd fair equally as badly, if not worse if they too were tortured... let alone tortured by fecking demons LOL!

They likely know. Just...
1. They do not really understand what PTSD means and how it affects various individuals.
2. AND/OR They lack empathy on a basic human level.
3. AND/OR They are 12.

(Obviously) I think discussing Cullen's character is an awesome thing... dissecting the character, guessing at his psychology, wondering what he'll do next, etc. I'm even fine with people discussing why they dislike the character.

I don't know why people get so offended when he said he would've struck the Warden down if he/she had become an abomination. I mean, ****, if someone you knew (friend or not) suddenly flipped out and transformed into a flesh eating, soul destroying demon ANYONE would try and kill it!

Yeah and that's my whole point. Cullen is SUCH a good example of a well-written character. In real life, would you like being around this person? (Personally, I do think I would be friends with him. I am friends with people who have wildly different political beliefs than I do, and Cullen isn't even a radical. Plus he's a genuinely nice guy.) Maybe not. But that doesn't mean he isn't well-written.
Also, running out shouting that he's evil and comparing him to Hitler doesn't make me even want to engage with you on the topic. You're an idiot. I'd rather talk politics with my cat.

Reading all of those Cullen threads reminds me of the countless times I ventured in threads trying to defend Kaidan, but it's pointless, if someone wants to hate a character than you can't change their minds, no matter how hard you try and how many good points you make.

I could genuinely respect and even admire someone who pointed out, "Look, Cullen is a poorly written character because as you can see in this scene, he is not consistent with how he was in this scene," etc.
But just saying Cullen/Kaiden/insert character is evil and a mage-hating jerk and therefore you do not like him and hope you get the chance to kill him in the next game... why am I even reading your post again??? *lol*

Exactly, like Rendon Howe, he was a complete jerk and I loved to hate him. I also love to hate Lady Isolde and her husband, but thats because they're so well written that their characters are believable enough to make me feel something towards them. So in that case, as characters I actually love them because they're so well written.

Eeesh, tell me about it! Kaidan got so real hate flung at him, for no reason at all.
