Ok, picture the scene:
The game opens with a cut scene through the eyes of someone who has just had seven shades of sh!t kicked out of them. You see them
(from their POV) fall to the ground as several people stand around kicking and spitting on said person. His/her vision starts to blur as he/she bleeds out. Everything slowly begins to fade as the attackers finally cease and walk away as you hear the muffled sounds of laugher and/or talking as he/she slips into unconciousness
*fade to black.* It's made clear that said person is in a bad way and is close to death but you're led to believe that it's probably just some random important person you'll have to save later on.
(This entire scene plays out from a first person perspective so you never see who's been attacked.)Finally the game begins like usual as you're introduced to the new protagonist and the epilogue/origin intro begins, with a different background origin based on your class, each narrated by your character to which he/she gives you a little information about themselves and the area he/she lives in. You then play through your characters short origin epilogue and continue to play the game like normal, doing quests, meeting new companions... shagging Cullen etc

. Then either midway through the game or near the very end your character gets seperated from the group and ends up getting the crap kicked out of him/her in some massively dramatic scenario, eventually triggering the cutscene from the beginning but this time not only do you get it from a first person perspective but from a 3rd person POV too, enabling you to see the enemy approaching and witness the beating they give your character that leads him/her to be left for dead, switching between both perspectives to add to the poignancy
*fade to black.* By then it'll occured to us that it was actually our character we saw getting beaten in the opening credits and everything up until that point was your protagonist re-living his/her "final days" in the form of one big flashback. If done correctly everyone should be thinking "****? Did I **** something up? Is it game over??" Then suddenly from your characters point of view his/her eyes open slowly, everything looks blurry and the light distorts everything for a moment, as his/her eyes adjust you can see your LI
(in our case Cullen) looking down on you, with a worried, frantic expression and calls for help because you're panicking and thrashing around (
you hear your characters breath quicken etc) as a healer Mage comes in and casts some spell/makes you drink something to sedate you
(your characters eyes close again as you see the worried expressions of all your companions beside you, still in first person POV.) When his/her eyes finally open again you realise you're in an unfamiliar room in a tavern, or at Anders new base of operation in his clinic
*que Anders cameo* with your LI sitting at your bedside as he/she tells you how they found you near death etc. After that you carry on with the game in "real time", find out why you were almost killed, do a few more quests, fight bad guys and eventually do the final boss battle... and then shag Cullen again LOL.
