But there's nothing saying that Cullen could not have shaved his mustache. and grew his hair out..into a slight ponytail.

It's been a few years.

But they like to keep characters "unique" appearance. At a base level they always keep the core design of what makes a character or past companion recognisable. So to change his hairstyle and/or facial hair completely would be counter productive from an "iconic appearance" stand point. Plus, if they really feel that he's as generic as others claim then they'll want to keep him looking as recognisable as possible.

Agree. Looking through fanart of Cullen,  you know there are just those very few things he has to have. That tight curly maybe-strawberry blond hair, that shadowy, stubbly goatee, and those stern looking eyebrows over amber eyes. LOL  Of course, throw in a sword of mercy, and it's obvious. But I hope they keep the others.

Precisely. I mean, if you look at the fanart each intepretation of Cullen is different, but they ALL include his trademark features:

A full head of tight blondish/redish cropped hair
His stubbly goatee
The dark circles around his eyes
The stern/worried eyebrows over amber eyes
A strong jawline
And a furrowed brow.

So whatever they come up with in-game I'd hope that his core trademark features would remain in tact.

Yeah, that's about it,. Ironically, it was the frowny expression that fit the most with maybe!Cullen. LOL

What I want to know is... who said he was generic looking????????

Pfft, in the overall generic-ness that many npcs suffer in da universe, i would say that he is very unique looking for non-companion...:pinched:

The thing is, all the characters look generic in the sense that all blonde clean cut men have a similar look lol. The same could be said about Alistair.

Funny you say that cause I honestly see similarities all over the place. Admittedly, companions have more unique look than other npcs (especially in da2). Still, on my first pt of dao I thought that similarity between Cailan and Alistair was due to the limitations of cc.

Edit: Still, my first thought seeing this pic was "Is it Cullen?!?!?!?":o:happy::o

I just wonder whether the difference in his appearance could be due to the art style used in those concept pieces. I guess I really want it to be him cause it seems to be a nice companions assemble. Just  don't want him to be missing.

Actually, I change my vote. I think that may indeed be maybe!Cullen in this pic. There's just something so familiar abt him. Something in the eyes. Looking closer at the hair, there does seem to be a lil bit of a crimp in there

Even the hand gesture. The body language really does strike me as Cullen-y. The restrained concern. And his mustache/goatee really is more stubble than actual growth. So. yeah.

I think the art is good in that it seems to show the personalities of these companions more so than exact physical appearance.

I now think it is indeed Cullen, but until I know for sure--doubt tears at my soul.

One thing I am getting from watching this panel at Gaymer X is Jessica and David's desire to reach out to fans who might not have had their voices heard in the past. Jessica gives her email even: jmerizan@bioware.com. I really think this is wonderful... I may at some point gather my thoughts concerning women, sexuality, representation, etc. and shoot her off an email. Although the funny thing about DA (and ME as well) is that it's almost so progressive a game that I have almost nothing to complain about on that front!

Though perhaps just letting them know that we appreciate certain things is also good.

Well, making a check list of Culleny things, this guy has a few.

x  Short, curly hair (you know, THAT DA curly hair... there's only one)
   blond hair
?? amber eyes
x  frowny eyebrows,
x? stubbly goatee
    long straight nose

I mean you can't tell colors, and the shadows make it hard to tell how extensive his stubble might be. But, what else would make this guy "Cullen" to you?  Apparently the artists were told to make DA2 Cullen "clean cut" which translated to smokin hot.

Yeah, I must admit, BW does a great job w/this kinda thing. BW games give me options that I simply do not have in....Hmm, I dare say any other game.

There are other games I really enjoy, but they aren't BW. They don't give me the same thing.

For me, it's the curly short hair, the stubble, the warrior (not rogue or mage) outfit, and the posture (the act of calmly reaching out his hand, as opposed to Cassandra's violent response, etc. as someone already pointed out).

Simply giving this character Cullen's hairstyle (the short curly hair... come on, there was only ONE option for curly hair in the CC, and only ONE major NPC had it) is enough of a red flag. As I said before, either...

1. It's Cullen
2. It's a mistake (artist was unfamiliar with the game and was given free reign on this character)

One of the two.

Yeah, those definitely crimps I see at the top of his head. I wish I could circle them, but..alas.

Long-ish face. Prominent square jaw. Nice chin. But the hair crimp is what really seals it for me. And the eyes. The area around the eyes. So Cullen-y. The hand gesture..he's always doing his hand like that.

I'm started to get excited..*tinytwirl*

Oh, Maker, I hope he comes out alright in the actual game. Plz! DA Team. Plz, don't make Cullen look like he just lost a fight w/the ugly stick. I beg you! Take care.

So, since it has been decided...he's not wearing Templar armor. I see no Templar symbols on it. Do you guys? Do you think that's...telling?

Yeah they are really listening to the fans too. The fact that they brought races back, changed the elves to make them look like a modded elf in DA:O, and even saying that they're looking back at Baldur's Gate really tells me that they're listening to us and show some care for us. And because they're listening to use the game seems to be freakin' amazing so far. I'm really impressed and happy with the Dragon Age team.

... Now, to just get them to listen to the Cullen fans.

Oh, but he won't know me! I keep forgetting that part. It's like that movie 50 First Dates.

The bolded. Definitely. That was the feeling I got. It was a very sweet feeling. And I admit I was surprised.

Not to say they should go along w/everything we want. Just the idea that they're trying to "show some care for us".

OK expanding the list. What else is quintessentially Cullen? What makes him so hot? LOL

   blond hair

x  frowny eyebrows,

x   long, oval face

tbh, i can't find any identifying info on any of the armor. i mean even just the style. who is that guy in the back. Mr. OMG Hands? What kinda armor is that? Have we seen that before? I was trying to figure out factions. like is it grey warden armor, but it looks nothing like any GW armor I've seen.

I think it's generic warrior armor.

R2, another thing that makes him Cullen in my eyes (I should say, reminds me of Cullen... obviously I have no idea if this guy is or isn't) is his posture and attitude. As someone else pointed out, everyone else is freaking out (except aloof elf guy), but Maybe!Cullen is sort of calmly stepping in to diffuse the situation. How often did he do that in game?
