If you are mostly siding with the mages, you'll get a quest in Act 3 to protect a family from being slaughtered by templars because they offered a meal to an escaped Circle mage. And I've got vague memories of templar Carver telling Hawke that the penalty for harboring an apostate is death. But see above about my memory.

I've got Nathaniel every time. I did get a mini quest once, where I went to Sundermount and a group of aggressive Templars were trying to take Feynriel back to the Gallows... so I helped the Elves kill them LOL! Never got it again though... which was odd.

To get the templars on Sundermount, you have to 1) Be in Act 2, 2) Have sent Feynriel to the dalish, and most importantly 3) not have *any* other active quests that would take you to Sundermount. Considering that most of the time, the first thing most people do is make the rounds and talk to our companions and get their companion quests, that's really easy to miss.

The escaped Circle mage thing is part of A Noble Agenda. It's Meredith's "death squad".  The only way you would know that the templars are there to kill the family for harboring an apostate is to sit there and ignore the red circles until the entire dialogue plays out. Having "ambient dialogue" subtitles turned on is an absolute must, because you're never going to hear it over the combat music otherwise. Most of the time, we just rush in and kill the templars. Approaching too close aborts the conversation between the templar and the mother and the templar addresses Hawke instead.
