New question for you all:

What sort of scenario would you like our protagonist to meet Cullen under? (I don't mean in what sort of role Templar/hired hand/drunk/etc), rather, what sort of intro? (Think along the lines of the way in which we've been introduced to companions in the past, for example, Zevran attacking us and then joining our party, Varric stopping a pick pocket from stealing Hawke's coin etc.)

I think I'd like to see him introduced incognito, for example, some NPC is like "I need you to meet with my associate tonight by the City gates" and you presume it's just a regular quest, so you head up there but get ambushed by a group of thugs, to which the "associate" helps you out, but you don't realise who it is until he drags you and your companions into a back room in some tavern, where the light is finally bright enough to discover that it's Cullen, who then goes on to explain why he's here and what his reasons are etc. I always find companion introductions better when you have no warning that you're about to gain a new party member, especially when it's a companion who was an NPC from one of the previous games.

Also, at PAX it was said that we can expect "some returning favourites as well as some new faces" - I'm presuming that would also include companions, but do you suppose they mean "old favourites" as in past companions that could become companions in DA3? Or do you think they mean old favourite NPC's becoming companions like Cassandra and Cullen etc? (After all, both Merrill and Isabela where NPC's from Dragon Age: Origins originally.)

I'd be somewhat inclined toward favorite NPCs as well. For all that I adore most of the companions, I'd rather have a chance to get to know some of the great NPCs better. I know Oghren has been used as an example of a good reuse of companions... and in my case, I suppose that's true since I never got a chance to  know him in DA:O. He was always the last I recruited, and I barely ever even got his approval up before the end. Velanna's another that I wouldn't mind another crack at, for the same reasons. Nate I could see... just since you never got to romance him and I know many who would like to. But, otherwise, I'd prefer some of the interesting NPCs (Cullen, Cassandra). Or interesting characters from other media, like Galyan (berelinde's ears perk up ! :D ).

Hmm, you remind me of how much I liked Zev's intro. I like that turnabout kind of idea. It reminds me of how in DA:O I had no idea who would or wouldn't become a companion, and I liked how the game would lead me on a bit. Like, how we got Daveth and then lost him, or that bandit who confronts you when you go to Lothering, and you can ask him to join, but he doesn't.

With someone like Cullen, I think your idea of us not knowing it's him for as long as possible is probably a good one... if only for the deafening fangirl squee to be heard 'round the world when he's finally revealed (and the equivalent groan from the haters). So I would expect them to do the bait and switch thing with him. Like, either he's in a fight and hooded, maybe even fighting against templars (!) as an additional misdirection, and you then meet him after. Or, something like Fenris's intro, where you do some quest for someone and find out later it's him.

Heh heh, and then watch... you get this kind of intro from him, and then in the ULTIMATE bait and switch, he turns down  your offer of becoming a companion... :o:pinched::crying:

To which I say... Hells yes!!!  That remains my favorite part of the templar arms...

I wonder what the significance of the red sash is supposed to be? I'd presume it doesn't just keep his skirt up lol.

R2: Omg, having him turn up whilst fighting Templars would be awesome, because you'd never expect him to be fighting his own people (well, we'd expect it lol, but no one else would.)

You haven't heard? Red is the new brown.

One of the complaints about DA:O was that everything was brown. In DA2, they "corrected" this non-problem by making everything red. I say non-problem because let's face it. A lot of the world *is* brown, especially before synthetic dyes.

Everything in Kirkwall is grey and sandy brown lol... Well, except the clothing. I wonder if Orlais will be as colourful as it was in MotA or if it'll look washed out like in Dawn of the Seeker.

Again, I suspect I'm being cynical, but I imagined it more along the lines of how Alistair or Zevran appeared in DA2 - not necessarily as companions but a sizable cameo?

Although I love the idea of Cullen appearing and turning down the request to be a companion. :pinched: IMAGINE THE BACKLASH

LOL it would be funny, but bloody annoying as well. When I played DA2 I thought we were recruiting him when we first met him but we didn't. Actually, I kinda like Cullen's intro in DA2 because the first thing you see is him seemingly attacking one of his own men and you think "wow Cullen's a total douche, beating up one of his own men for no reason!" Which was clever because we expected him to be either mental or power hungry depending on his epilogue, but then you find out why he's beating on his brother in arms and all becomes clear.

Unfortunately, this is also what I expect for major players like Cullen and Cassandra, that they'd be NPCs. I'm hopeful, but also think our chances of having Cullen as a companion are realistically small.

LOL No kidding about the backlash. It would be kinda funny... but only in retrospect after I finished crying my eyes out.

LOL But, weren't the DA:O templar sashes purple, presumably to match their skirts? :innocent:Image IPB

Anyhoo, I would love to hear a reason for them as well, like something steeped in lore for what they represent. In DA2 there's something called the Templar Ceremonial Cumberbund that apparently Templars receive upon taking their vows. Of course, "cumberbund" sounds like a sash to me, but their description makes it sound more like a belt.

When a templar takes his vows and enters the service of Andraste,he is presented with a suit of ceremonial armor to be worn when in the presence of the grand cleric. Every piece of the armor is covered in the iconography of blessed Andraste.

The cummerbund is wide, made of interlocking steel plates inlaid with gold, and adorned with two hundred and eight embossed stars along the edging: one for each day Andraste sung to the Maker to deliver her people. The center plate depicts, in bas relief, the burning Sword of Mercy. Beside it is a shield, representing the disciple Havard. On the other side is ring split in half, which symbolizes Maferath. The buckle is formed like a sun, representing the Maker. On the steel inner face of each plate, a line of the Chant of Light is written.

The last is an interesting touch. Concealed artistic flair or an overt cheat sheet at mass?

I hope it's colorful like in MotA. That was something I really liked about it.

Hehheh, yeah, I agree. I've been developing such a scene in my brain recently. Once he pics a side in the Mage-Templar War, I think inevitably he'll have to go up against templars one way or another. Ah, the drama for our poor, inconveniently moral knight!
