... LOL he's such a plank, I really hope he gets over that in DA3 as a LI/companion, it'll drive me bat sh!t crazy if he keeps going on about not trusting them all the time in the same way that Anders went on about the Mages plight etc.
Btw, has anyone else ever noticed that when Cullen speaks of brothels and the "young ladies" in the Bloomin Rose, his professional "grown up" authoritative voice suddenly slips and he sounds really young and clueless again. I think maybe, if he's a companion/LI in DA3 his "professional" deeper sounding voice will probably subside as you become friendly/romantically attached to him, especially since he probably won't even be on duty by that point anyway.

It sucks doesn't it! I thought we were recruiting him the first time I played DA2 lol, I was disappointed.

That reminds me of something else I wanted to ask, you know when we are first introduced to Cullen and he's kicking the crap out of Wilmod and before he turns into an abomination he says "You have struck me the last time, you pathetic human. To me!" - Do you suppose Cullen's been knocking him about during his time within the Templar Order (long before all the trouble with Templars being possessed happened.)
Yes. Definitely, unrepentantly yes. Wilmod also says something along the lines of "don't hit me, ser," but I don't have the exact line handy.
Cullen has very raw, fresh PTSD wounds at this point in his timeline. PTSD will cause overreactive fear responses, overreactive anger responses, or both.
My explanation for Wilmod's lines is this: Cullen knows the recruits have not seen anything like the attack in Ferelden. Some recruits like Wilmod are friends with mages and don't take the templar teachings seriously. Cullen becomes frightened when he sees Wilmod casually blow off templar teachings, and that fright manifests in a manner that is similar to a parent being **REALLY FRIGHTENED** when their child does something dangerous -- the kind of fright that turns into an angry parental spanking. So, Cullen sees Wilmod doing something "dangerous" like talking to a mage, and Cullen completely flips out because PTSD makes him unable to correctly manage his fears and anger.
My headcanon is that the recruits see Cullen as a nutcase during his first year in Kirkwall but Cullen eventually mellows out.

So I just found this picture, and it gave me another question for you guys:
What do you think is going through his mind in the picture? This is during the scene where Meredith loses her sh!t and wants to use the rite of annulment.
"I knew I should have posted my resume at the Chantry for a job transfer."
"Another annulment? Not this sh*t again."
"This is going to be a massive PR mess that I do not want to handle..."
"I cannot believe I put my trust in this woman."

These are awesome. It's a toss for me between the first two as to which is my favorite! LMAO Realistically, I bet his real response is a combo of "Not again." and the last. "No one ever listens. Not until it's far too late."vieralynn wrote...

Yeah, that one. I've always felt that one just shows how much you as a player can influence him during the game. I mean, he says that you shouldn't trust a mage in response to Hawke saying that Alain is basically guilty by association with blood mages since he was "in swaddling clothes." Anti-mage sentiment seems to beget anti-mage sentiment in him. LOL Of course, the only time he actually gets mad at *you* is if you say you don't care one way or the other.LolaLei wrote...
*Sigh* I found this video that I had forgotten about in DA2. It seems that despite his fond memories of our female Mage Warden, he still believes that you should never trust a Mage... and yet he's quick enough to follow orders from Hawke who is either A) a Mage orhas Mage companions:
... LOL he's such a plank, I really hope he gets over that in DA3 as a LI/companion, it'll drive me bat sh!t crazy if he keeps going on about not trusting them all the time in the same way that Anders went on about the Mages plight etc.
I was rereading the Thedas UK interview with DG about Cullen's obliviousness in the face of magic being performed right in front of him. Reading between the lines, it seems he kinda acknowledge that some of these inconsistencies are just... um, writing flaws.
DG: Well, we think about it too. When we cut that plot I was like "Oh. All right, so...I guess nobody notices..." So I put a couple comments into Meredith's dialogue, she sort of comments "We knew who you were," and in a few other places. I think we should've put something into Cullen's dialogue. [laughter]
TUK: Poor Cullen. So oblivious.
DG: Jennifer wrote that plot, and afterwards, I forget what it was, someone said "You know, wouldn't Cullen happen to burst onto the scene and you're casting spells, wouldn't he say 'So you're a mage...'" It was too late for us to do anything about it and we decided that Cullen is just very oblivious.

Vieralynn: I hadn't thought of it like that. Still sucks to think of him as violent. Wilmod's line seemed like it could have meant that Cullen gave him a beating regularly or that the scene between him and Cullen had been going on for quite a while prior to Hawke showing up (so when he refers to being struck for the last time by him, it was in reference to Cullen slapping him about whilst trying to extract information of his dealings with the mages.)
You know, I've always thought it was the latter... that he had just been whaling on him for a while during that confrontation. I suppose I could see Cullen cuffing a recruit during training who was acting out, given a certain macho physicality that I could see coming with that kind of a job. But, I would like to think that he wouldn't be cruel and physically punish an underperformer, even with his PTSD.

I don't know. He seems more the type to fall inward when confronted by stress rather than lashing out. His DA:O epilogue notwithstanding, his basic nature seems to be introspective and not particularly violent. He doesn't want to kill the Warden, male or female.R2s Muse wrote...

I don't know if you can call Cullen out on his violence if you play other kinds of Hawkes, but diplo Hawke definitely can. He says that Wilmod had to believe that the danger was real, that by remaining silent, he really would be attacked. And Wilmod did believe it, and Cullen found out a lot more than he thought he would.
That said, Cullen's "So help me, Wilmod" bit, where he threatens him at swordpoint, seems kinda... obvious to me. I mean, yes, it is violence, but it seems forced. Cullen seems to have gone to the same acting school as Anders.
Edit: @ladyshaman: To me, that expression says "Nice! I've been wanting to do that for the last three years!"

That's a good point, berelinde. Again, underscoring that he's not by nature that violent. So, by saying "you've hit me for the last time," demon!Wilmod is basically saying, "WTF, I'm done with this. Come get some, human."berelinde wrote...

Popping in to say hello! I've been super busy. I don't think Cullen would have been abusive to the recruits at all. Like R2 said, maybe a cuffing, but that sort of thing happens in any type of military setting, IMO.
I think he looks lost here. Like "what do I do now?"
OMG, I love this expression. To me he kind looks like he's cringing, like "You've got a be f*cking kidding me! The strangest sh!t happens to me!"

I was reading about parenting tropes after seeing Brave and ran across "Knight Templar Parent" which is essentially the "overprotective, you touch my kid, I kill your whole family"-type parent. I laughed at the name, and then wondered what sort of parent Cullen would be. Would he just be the protective "Good Parent" or, given his skillset, the vengefully overprotective parent like this trope? Would being a parent ever compromise his ironclad morality?

I think he'd be a bit like "how the hell am I supposed to bring up a kid when I'm never around" but once he got used to it I think he'd be a protective parent (in a good way), but even more inclined to be like "MUST PROTECT MY FAMILY, DIE BLOOD MAGES!!!" lol.
