Oh I have been on the thread before I did this really long thing on PTSD lol! But thanks anyway! : D

Now this has just been my experience (as a professional lurker lol) but the people that hate Cullen are not anywhere near in number as the people that like him. It seems like the people who don’t like him are much more vocal or um noisy (sorry other guys). But when looking all around the web, not just BSN there are tons of folks who seem really excited about him being a companion. Now I also know that Bioware really does listen to its fans for example, making Tali and Garrus romance options. Now that was a different team for a different series so it might not work the same here.

Actually on that note are there any examples of that happening in the dragon age universe?

Hello Cullen thread! I have been lurking for a while and decided to resurface to throw in my two cents about whether or not Cullen would be a companion. Also it is long again sorry… go make some popcorn or something. : D

I truly do think he will be a major character and potentially in this companion role for quite a few reasons. Things like the leak, Greg Ellis and the hastily gotten rid of tweet, big fan base (ect, ect see other thread members for more). Now my major reason might be weird but hear me out. Having Cullen as a character would be brilliant marketing/good business practice. If you are creating a product you typically want that product to reflect or include an aspect of something your consumer desires. While I personally believe that video games are more than just merchandise (they truly are an art form) they are made to be bought and sold. Bioware (as much as they like teasing their fans) really do value us for reasons like sales (probably more EA than bioware here lol) and even value how much we love these amazing games they create. Now as I understand it, Cullen has a monumentally sized fan base. Not including a character that many people desperately want is bad business practice, pure and simple and at the end of the day Bioware and EA are still companies that have to look at the bottom line. Now the issue with this concept is that diehard fans aren’t going to chose whether or not to purchase the game because one character isn’t an LI/Companion. Especially if you consider the fact that if they are this obsessed with a character then obviously they are serious fans lol. However, Bioware has been trying to keep people excited about DAI and they can’t release all of their best information at once and do that. Many people also hated Dragon age two (I really liked it but that doesn’t really pertain to this monolog lol) and even though bioware talks about how proud they were of it (and in many, many ways they should be), I’d bet money that their sales people are really going to be saying to them “You have to include features that keep your core base happy and also bring in new consumers” So there are fans (like a plethora of fans) that really want Cullen and even if that group doesn’t get him they would still buy the game. However, if the game doesn’t hold up to snuff they could accidentally alienate a huge group of people who otherwise would have been more willing to let flaws slide. Now I know that is depressing but that is usually how people look at things. If you are given something you were really hoping for your more inclined to be accepting of outlying issues.

My other line of reasoning in the not alienating fans category is this. People have asked very frequently if he would be a companion and all bioware folks say is “Time will tell” sort of things. What possible good would it do them to lead this enormous group of fans on and then pull the rug out from under them? Why not just say “No sorry, we didn’t think he was a good fit for the story” instead of antagonize this clearly loyal faction? They already explained with mistress mama Morgan that she wouldn’t be a companion but would play a clear role. So why not with Cullen? Now you might say “Because he wasn’t included in the article” but you know Bioware has the exact same information regarding the leaks and tweets about Cullen that we do and from looking at the information he really seems like he would be a companion.
But on the other hand releasing information about Cullen right now could potentially be bad business practice because of the fans that get on BSN to just complain about things (including but not limited to Cullen)They might not buy the game if they hear about different things they don’t like because their still in court about whether or not they will get the game. So releasing information about cool features and what the game will actually be right now will rope them into the point where it won’t matter if a companion is someone they don’t really like, they will still purchase it. Also they may want to release who the companions will be in close succession. While it would be so awesome if they did just say “Yeah he is”, or “No he isn’t” it might not be scaled for whatever their marketing plan is. Now potentially I am over analyzing the bananas out of this but I stand by it! Lol

OR! OR! Cullen is the major villain behind the red templars!!! You heard it here first! mwhahahahahaha

While I think what you said could be cool and hopeful , I dont beileve that ppl will buy or not buy a game based  "soley" of a character, also the Cullen fan base its kind of a minority compared to everything else .

Sure every character  has his or her fans but to the same degree they also have alot of haters, so them by  marketing Cullen I think there would be an outrage in the bsn forums since  from what i've seen alot of ppl dislike the character for one reason or another...

Also  they do market "special" features  that customers desiers but most of these features  for some ppl are more important  then an NPC, these *major* features were presented recently  such as the returning races and an additional  "new " race the Qunari, also tactical combat and isometric vew,  these are the main features that people have hoped for since the whole DA2 thing that was lacking.

Now ofc some of the returning characters play a "big" role too into a customers desire such as Varric Cassandra and Morrigan, and others but looking through the threads of the DAI forums almost everytime  I see a Cullen thread it usually turns nasty witch alot of the times worries me that the devs may think that it would be a bad move to make him a companion because of so much hate, now granted the devs have been awesome and actually did listen to the fans and did quite a bit of things to please them , however sometimes this listening to the fans bit since we are a minority I fear that they are going to listen to the haters since they are more of a majority IMO and not include him as a companion..

The only character I remember them bringing back and making a romance was Anders...idk if the romance was due to popular demand though.

Yes there is actually. Anders was added as companion LI in DA2.

And stuff about game play and things like that. I know there's more, but I can't think of it at the moment.

Well I consider the fact that Varric, Morrigan, and Leliana are back examples of BW listening to the fans. However, video game companies still can't seem to accept that their core base isn't all straight male teenagers. So look at how popular Alistair is among the female fanbase... we've heard narry a word on his returning, though. Yet the ever popular Morrigan returns, as does everyone's favorite "bro," Varric.

Now I'm not blaming the writers, whom I admire (like seriously), but I'm just looking at the returning cast and making judgments from that alone.

Ahhh so it's not to say they will be a companion per say. Probably an NPC who gives a quest or something then. Could be interesting!

Ok So maybe I didn’t do a good job explaining what I meant. I meant to make the same point you said in your top sentence. Cullen fans would still buy the game even if they didn’t have him as a companion/LI because if they are so invested in a character then they are obviously big fans. But not just letting the Cullen fans down easy and saying “You need to fan over other people” before they get way to excited seems like an unwise move.
When discussing Dragon age and its huge fan base Cullen as an Companion/LI is truly in the minority of something fans want when compared to features of game play that people sought (like tactical view, playable races and what have you) but he is not a minority in regards to character fandom…if that makes sense. What I mean is when looking at Cullens fanbase compared to many other characters in the series it is rather large. You also mentioned that he has a lot of haters and this is totally true. My thing is though most of them do. I mean look at Anders or Leliana. We already know she is going to show back up again. I have also seen a lot of hate for Cassandra which is weird to me because she didn’t really show up a bunch in the second game. I guess the movie. But they still included her, even with that group that really didn’t like her. So I really think Bioware listens to like groups more than the hate ones. Also if they are worried about the haters they could still let everyone who is wondering know and just say “No he isn’t a companion, relax.”
Now there may be a ton of hate threads, but they aren’t anywhere near as long as this one and a lot of the same people that are “haters” go in there and complain. But simply look at the size of this thread compared to those. Also look at how many people go on this thread! It is pretty impressive when you think about how he is just an NPC. Bioware has really smart people working for it. They should have the forward thinking capacity to say “Yeah a lot of those hate threads pop up, but look at the size of the other one!” lol and the good news is writers and other workers definitely know about this thread so it isn’t some mystical treasure hidden in the back of the BSN cave Posted Image

ok from left to right here who do we think is in this pic? I don't know if this was discussed already but yeah...

Cass
Uhm I don't know
Cullen
Inquy
Elf guy...does he have a name yet? Whatevez I dub thee Orlando Bloom
Viv
Leliana
Varric

so that's...7 out of 9 companions. But I really don't think Leliana will be one...that and I don't fussy her that much

FYI, DG has said explicitly about this pic that "many" are not companions. So it's not a slam dunk.

edit:
Also, for reference,  "Uhm I don't know" is who most of us here have been referring to as "Flaily Hands," and "Elf guy" has been "Chill" or "Chill McSmugson" and sometimes "maybe!Dorian." "Viv" is not Vivienne, as per DG, but looks more like the one who most folks call "Scribe Girl" from the leaked survey. And, "Cullen" typically has be "maybe!Cullen," since we're not quite sure.

Anyhoo, just so we're all on the same page, since we've discussed this one A LOT! And when everyone uses different words/names for each one, discussion gets difficult.

So how will you guys be using the Keep? Have you thought about your "canon" playthroughs? I think it's going to be important to have a single canon playthrough that is really special to you, b/c they might not be able to do multiple canons at the Keep.

For me, I'm not going to replay the games; I think I'm going to insert/upload old imports and tweak them. So they'll look like this:

DA:O
Dalish male archer, Theron Mahariel
Romanced Zevran
Crowned Harrowmont
Anora in jail, Alistair on the throne
Loghain dead
Lied to Morrigan, didn't kill Flemeth
Alistair did the DR
Made the ashes public (because he could care less, not Andrastian)

DLC
Waved good-bye to Morrigan in the mirror
Saved the Keep, not the city
So Nathaniel et al are safe

DA2
Male rogue Eirik Hawke
Sarcastic personality
Romanced (friendship) Fenris
Pro-Circle, but saved the Circle and spared Anders
Bye-bye Sebastian, sorry you hate me now
Sent Feynriel to the Circle, but ultimately let him go
Bethany in the Circle; they're not very close
Didn't kill Merrill's tribe; rivals with Merrill
Besties with Isabela, but killed Castillon for Fenris' sake
(is that everything?)

DAI:
Male archer elf
Romances Cullen :wub::innocent:
Other stuff lol

Okay, I am so late, but I want to join in!

DA:O
Human female mage; arcane warrior.
Romanced Alistair
Crowned Bhelen
Destroyed the Anvel of the Void
Convinced Zathrian to help the werewolves
Saved the mages at the Circle
Saved both Connor and Isold
Anora made Queen
Alistair unhardened and still with the wardens
Loghain dead as a doornail
Killed Flemeth
Alistair did the ritual
Completed all companion quests.
Showed Brother Genitivi the Ashes; I guess that means they're public? I don't remember telling anyone else about them.

DA:A
Saved  Amaranthine; Nathaniel alive

DAII
Male Sarcastic Mage; Force Mage and Spirit Healer
Romanced Anders (Friendship)
Carver is a Warden (Friendship)
Was all about compromise until he was forced to pick; saved mages in general, though.
Sides with the mages at the end and didn't kill Anders.
Feynriel went to the Dalish first, then to Tervinter.
Friendship'd Merrill; she didn't destroy the mirror and her clan had to be killed (the mirror is so gonna bite me in the arse)
Friendship'd Isabella; she returned and he dueled the Arishok.

DAI
I have no cluuuuuue yet~

This is true, for a NPC guy he sure has the biggest thread in the forum and that gives me hope^_^

Idk I suppose i was saying that based on most hate threads on other things like if a hate thread pop up alot on something the devs would say that they have "fixed" it and that is no longer included or that they have changed something with it like  for a more recent example  the thing with the no health regen bit, there were several  "hate" threads about that and then later on today Mark stated that it wont be like that with all dificulties (witch its fine for me cuz i dont wanna die alot lol) but yea im just useing this as an example

But to the same degree you are right there has been numerous hate threads about characters  and despide those threads they still got included  witch is hopefull, idk i suppose im just down on myself sometimes when i dont really see any mention of Cullen anywhere  within the new info they are realising but I suppose i would still like to think that they will say something about him next year perhaps and hopefully  it will be a BIG good news (wishful thinking)

Yeah, given all that squickiness with romancing a qunari, I wonder if they would  make him a qunari-only romance or something... I'm honestly still surprised that the PC can be a qunari and have romances. I just never expected qunari and sex to be in the same sentence in DA:I.

LOL Although, we should keep in mind that that was FAR from the case at the point where they were deciding the companions which was over a year ago.

Honestly, I don't think BW would put in a character because the fans love or hate him. He'll have to work for the story. But, as David Gaider himself has said, and I quote:

I assure you that if we did include Cullen as a follower, it wouldn't be solely to "pander" to his fans. Not that I would overly mind pandering to them. They're not a large group, but there's hardly a nicer and more polite group one could choose to pander to.

Speak for yourself; I'm all about tappin dat :wizard: ....No, I know what you mean LOL

Well, to me this confirms that qunari people are not biologically incapable of arousal. It's just the Qun culture that forbids romantic connections.

Did they confirm the romance part? I mean, I don't doubt that qunari will have romance options, it's just weird considering what they've said about them in the past and their views on relationships/romance, etc.

...I mean, I doubt they'd make a character THAT different based on race but I'd hate for me to go in playing a Qunari and not get to romance anyone in the offchance that the devs were like, "No."
