I recall an interview with DA fans about Cullen, but it was old... Like, around or even before DA2 came out. Hmm...

Anyhoo, yeah, MLaw said we'd most likely hear about the rest of the companions next year. DG has also said that, yes, they have known who the companions are for a while.

In the interview, when he mentioned Cullen's history, he was speaking about having been disappointed (to use a lighter word) in the Circle in Ferelden and then again in Kirkwall. He was saying something about Cullen's storyarch worth for the next Dragon Age (not in these exact words, obviously).

But even if  (and that's a big personal if for me) the interview had been THAT old- traces of it should be locatable.

Are you getting it confused with the one DG done where he spoke about what Cullen's story arc represented?

Hmm, that's sorta what it sounds like to me. If you check out my blog here, The Case for Cullen In DA3, it summarizes everything we've been able to scrounge up about Cullen being in the game, through Jan 2013 ( I'm about to update it). It includes links to two DG interviews where he talks about Cullen, in particular, these comments sound a lot like the Thedas UK one. (and if it really is a Greg Ellis convo, I hope you find it!!  squee!!)

Oh good, let us know when you update it. I need some reassurance about Cullen being a companion.

Edit for top:

Image IPB

"Oh, Maker. I'm so tired of being on this emotional roller-coaster! Just tell me, am I a companion or not?!"

:D

I go up and down with the waiting time. Depending on how bored I feel and if I'm going thru a period where a game isn't entertaining me enough, feels like it's taking a while, but if you can try and not think about it too much, time seems to fly.

However, was just thinking.. some people feel spoiled by BioWare games.. I remember when Skyrim first came out, I was distracted for literally months. Past few days been playing the vanilla game, and I can only get by for an hour.. maybe because I've played it to death already. Mostly though, I just feel bored. From the lack of interaction.

I try not to compare RPGs to BioWare games, gotta try and appreciate a game for what it is, what it has. Sometimes hard not to. Then that got me to thinking, if Inquisition ends up being as great as it's shaping up to be, that's gonna be a whole new standard of gamings.

Some keep comparing it to other games, saying the other games are better, but perhaps it'll set a new standard, and the other games will be the one that need to look to -them- to make themselves better for a change.

There it is! This is the only interview I've seen with Greg Ellis about his work... but it doesn't even mention Dragon Age. It's too old.

Lol, did you see DG's reply to the thread that wanted the option for the Inquisitor to be an Amell again?

DG: "The Amell link was an easter egg for those who recognized it, nothing more. There was nothing significant about it-- and, no, there is no such link in DAI. Nor would one really make sense, sorry."

Hmm... so what does that  mean about the Cadash last name...?  Just another easter egg??

And, honestly, thank the Maker the Amells aren't special snowflakes. But then, didn't he already tell us last year that the new protagonist wouldn't be an Amell?

So you guys might find this interesting. upsettingshorts and David Gaider have had a little back and forth about the importance of revealing the romance options in advance.

I see both points of view. Personally, I'm torn. Do I want to know about Cullen? A part of me does, if only to rip the bandaid off now and get over it. Back before ME3 came out, I stalked the forums for any leak about Joker, and if he was a possible love interest. Well, I found the spoilers I wanted and, honestly, it did help to know that Joker was off the table. Once I got the game and guide, I did immediately flip the character section to double-check, though.

(There were other issues that compounded that, though, like no other MLI for that character. Because Kaiden was dead for her. I ended up going for Traynor because I wanted to see how that played out, but I was disappointed. I haven't picked up the game since I beat it.)

That said, what if Cullen was announced at a romance interest? That just opens up a whole new kettle of probable-awful. Then we tie ourselves into knots thinking about how it could be, or how it'll end, or how his character is different. Will he memtion my Amell Warden? Will he compare he to my Inquisitor? Oh, I bet he's still shy! I bet he runs away! I bet--

And I can see how the writers want to avoid a whole year of that kind of build up, because there is no way they could live up to the hype. Because they don't spend as long as we do thinking about the romances, with such laser-focus. Honestly, what is a romance in these games? Five or less conversations with a few ambient mentions? We'd let ourselves down.

So, I don't blame them. But a part of me still wants to know. And there's nothing wrong with that.

(Again with the word vomit. Sorry if this makes no sense. My mind just gushes content and my fingers fight to keep up.)

I totally understand. The romances are the only spoiler I really want to know, so I also read the romance section from the DA2 game guide (that someone had kindly typed out on the BSN) before I plowed in. I think it is a "safe" kind of a spoiler, for those who want it, because it tells me that I won't spend 80 hours to find myself getting dumped during the story climax. Or find out 2/3 of the way in that somehow I accidently turned off my romance. So... huh, am I saying I need the romance spoilers because they're buggier than the rest of the game?  Or maybe it's because those types of bugs (or unforeseen bad outcomes) are more annoying than bugs like not being able to find/save Feynriel's dream-girlfriend?  I know I found myself skimming over the story details and proper nouns in the guide, looking only for showstoppers, things like "Fenris leaves" (which I actually thought meant leaves Kirkwall or actually quits your party, so I was pleasantly surprised when he was still a party member after he dumped me! ).

edit: LOL meanie!

I agree. The romances tend to be the most... finicky part of the game. Which also makes them really fun to play around with. And really frustrating if you don't quite understand why it happened that way.

(If you only knew my eternal frustration at believing Sebastian was the asexual romance I always wanted... only for Hawke to pull out the most suggestive lines in all of Thedas. RAWRLKSDFJLSIEFJLESKJ NO WHY)

I merey suggest that the writers have the right idea with releasing this kind of information. Let's not unleash the beast so soon, lest it eat us all.

Half-heartedly...

It almost feels like Bioware is saying, "We listen to our fans. We want to give them what they want. Really. We really do."

*Looks over at Cullen fans*

"Just ...not... You guys."

Hey, so long as Cullen isn't suddenly attracted to sexbots demons, and turns into a creepy perv, I'll be happy.

I didn't see that as being towards Cullen fans specifically... just romance fans in general, which for some reason DG doesn't really understand.

I'm also nuts about the romances. My first playthrough of DA2, I had the wiki for Fenris romance and approval pages open and consulted them constantly. Made sure I took him on all the right quests so his friendship would go up, and left him home during stuff like Act of Mercy (but for some reason I can never forget to not take him to the Gallows... urgh).

Same with ME3. What if I hadn't read before hand that I have to buy the bottle of whiskey and give it to Kaiden in the hospital? I'd have missed my chance to romance him. How stupid is that? I didn't even realize you could buy stuff from those terminals until about halfway through the game lol

I'm actually all right with not knowing who the LIs are at this point. In fact, there is a sick, strange part of me that doesn't want to know and just wants to go into Inquisition blind and see who takes my flirt bait. Kinda like the good old days of KOTOR when I knew nothing about BioWare or their romance and just pleasantly stumbled upon it. Same goes for my first Origins playthrough. I went in blind and imagine my surprise when not just one male but two(!) flirted back!

Of course, now with Cullen possibly being on the table as a companion, I don't want to go in blind. I want to know if I can have him, and if I can't? Well, then chances are I won't look into the romanceable characters bios, knowing their names would be spoiler enough for me.

i missed the bottle of whiskey on my first Kaiden romance too, but I was still able to romance him. I was a fem/Shep with no prior romance in ME2 and a 'comic book choice Kaiden romance'  for ME1 (since I play on PS3). Do different factors play into the whiskey? Because if that is the only trigger for a certain playthrough, I'd be pissed off not knowing about it. Like you, I learned about the whiskey and the ability to purchase it halfway through the game.

I played ME3 first without having played ME 1&2, and I had a BroShep. Every website I read said you HAVE to buy the bottle of whiskey to trigger the romance. So I did lol

Ahh I just remembered this awkward moment in ME3 when I had already agreed to the romance with Kaiden (such a sweet scene), then I saw Steve hanging out at the bar. I'm all, oh cool, my buddy Steve! And he's going out again like he said he would, aww, I'm so proud of you, buddy! *goes to talk to Steve* Steve: Hey, how's it going! *immediately hits on me* My only responses: *smarmy comment about only wanting to dance with the ladies* OR *Hell yeah, let's get it on!*

Well I didn't wanna be a homophobe, so I selected the flirt line LOL and thankfully Steve was like, Nah, you're with Kaiden.

But seriously, I was like WTF. It was an Anders moment all over again.

LOL same here.

If he's not a companion or LI, one I'll be surprised. But if he's not, I hope he still plays a good part as an NPC or agent or something along thoses lines to keep me happy lol

I still can't wait for this game, with or without Cullen...but I would prefer him in it lol

LOL, that's how I feel about that Diana Allers scene, except it came off as really skeevy to me. Yet, the Travers one did not. I just let her shower and be on her way. Good old oblivious Shep! I felt ME3 had a lot of unintentional leading on of the crew. I honestly thought I was just being nice and not flirting with anyone at all. Then suddenly they show up in my room. At least with Anders, he doesn't show up at your bedroom door until you make it very clear that you want him there in adult consenting ways!
