Edit: As for the male/female ratio, I don't much care. Three likable, well-developed female characters would please me far more than five characters who were included only increase the estrogen content. And I'd really hate to see them scrap well-developed male characters (like Cullen) just to fill some quota.
Oh wow, I have way, way, way too much admiration and respect for the writers to imagine that they'd ever create shallow characters just to fill a quota.
But when told that there needs to be equal representation, a good writer, given time, would be able to come up with enough fully developed and well-written characters. The problem, of course, is that I don't imagine anyone's yet said that having just three women is a problem (if there are, in fact, just three women). And...

The thing that peeves me isn't the lack of ladies really, it's the fact that the roles would probably never be reversed. You wouldn't have a game where three out of nine party members were male, what crazy person would ever play that??![]()
This pretty much explains why. We don't yet live in a world that acknowledges inequality between the sexes. Certainly the world of gaming doesn't.
ag99 wrote...
But yea maybe for us we might be ok with 3 females, but I can kind of understand the guys side as well cause they might not have that many women to choose from if one of them isnt romanceable...
Um, well, unless plans change, there will only be 2 males and 2 females to romance regardless.
Chanda wrote...
Let's see, there were only three females in DA:O: Morrigan, Leliana, and Wynne. Then there were only three females in DA2: Merrill, Aveline and Isabela. Four if you count Bethany, who was there only for the first act, IF you were a rogue or warrior. So I really don't think three females for DAI will be a problem.
Yeah, true, but DA:I is its own entity, and I'm not sure how much we can rely on how things were done in previous games.

Btw, does anyone have that image of Ash's notes from PAX, the ones stating that a character from Asunder will be in the game?
I think the name of her blog is Lady Insanity....
Multi-quote power!!!

Wasn't there talk of going with the 2/2/2 romance model? I was plenty happy with having 2 bi LIs per gender, but I recall something somewhere about changes... My brain is turning to mush. Time to go home.

Also, have we seen GW dude in any gameplay vids? I forget. If not, it's possible that they made *him* a rogue to balance the classes. There's nothing that says Grey Wardens have to be warriors, and it isn't unknown for the devs to change things around between concept art and final game.
Yeah, he was in (I think) the first one wielding a sword (or was it two?). Def. a warrior, I'd say. Still, as I said, I don't think that's really problematic. In DA2 they went with rogues over warriors, as opposed to DAO, so that could definitely happen, but that's pretty much a coin toss at this point.
Yeah, we've seen a pretty strong hint of him in the GI videos, and he had a sword and shield, like in the customization blog concept art.

But again... I go back to my original point. We're all making arguments about specific numbers and ratios based upon no data. We have three companions confirmed. That's it. Any of the characters we've seen, we don't even know if they're in the game, if they're a follower or just NPC, or in many cases, their exact class. Speculation is fine... but seems premature to worry about those details yet.

So far... everyone seems cool, and I like what I'm seeing!

A fine point, Dr. Thread Mom! *holds up finger* Alas, "fact" and "reason" do not often go hand in hand with "panic" "fear" and "wild speculation"

LOL yeah... I know. And, I mean, of course! It's the Cullen thread. But, it seems folks are getting a little caught up in the numbers game. I mean, two games already does not a pattern make (and this is coming from an astronomer who would just as soon call each set of companions "Population I" and "Population II" ! LOL ).berelinde wrote...

I wonder how off some of her details will end up being once all is said and done. It's always interesting how when in a situation like this... where your adrenaline is jacked up and you're all excited ... you can either mishear or misinterpret so easily.

*By "in" I don't mean the officially confirmed characters (Varric, Cass, Viv) but those that might be considered "in" right now but haven't been confirmed. i.e. Sera and GW, who were seen in the video.

I think the main deal is that we're a year away from release. That's long enough to even scrap characters who are "in" and swap them out for different characters.

Yeah, it's one thing if Mike Laidlaw says it. Another if someone tries to repeat what he said. The telephone game is always amusing.meanieweenie wrote...

Prisoner: Johnny and the Mothers are playing "Stompin' at the Savoy" in Vermont tonight.
Johnny Dangerously: Vermin's going to kill my brother at the Savoy theater tonight.
Prisoner: I didn't say that.
Johnny Dangerously: No, but I know this grapevine.

Sorry, can't help it. And I really mean that. I'm kind of a numbers person. I count and compare, and that gives my world a kind of order, if that makes any sense. Seriously, if I'm doing a repetetive task, I'll sit there and do fractions about how far along I've come, reducing them to the lowest common denominator as I go. Once, I figured out the size of a Dungeons and Dragons gold piece based on the stated price of a room at an inn, the current cost of a hotel room, and the price and density of gold. When that was done, I went on to calculate the size of silver and copper pieces. My dungeon master was highly annoyed.R2s Muse wrote...

Hearing, memory, passing through the brain and getting twisted around (or not passing through the brain at all...).
Given the passion involved in the speculation, I kind of wonder why it isn't better to just get the news out and be done with it. People will rant, but they'll get it out of their systems and be done with it.
