... If/when we get to see the first mutated red Templar, I'm kinda hoping Cullen will be around to witness it too. So if he isn't a companion/LI then I hope that it'll happen during his introduction quest (if he's an important npc, or Red Fist leader), or during his cameo/whatever. I wanna see/hear his reaction to it.

We all know if he's a Companion he'll be in our groups 24/7 anyways lol

LOL, that would be awesome! Actually, the
red Templars remind me of the indoctrinated Cerberus soldiers from ME3
.
They were in full armour with helmets on so they seemed normal, and
were coherent, but then Shepard pulled off one of their helmets and they
were half husked up with glowing blue eyes and
blackish/blueish/purplish mottled skin. Creepy!

I could imagine
maybe getting a good look at a red Templar who's been huffing red lyrium
and seeing how their skin is starting to go all weird, like Corypheus. I
mean, extreme lyrium usage mutates the user, like those Tervinter
magisters, so I bet red lyrium would speed up the process!

This was my exact thought when I first learned of the red Templars. And if, say, the tevinter magisters are behind the chaos, they could be secretly supplying or pushing the red lyrium to templars whose morals are shaky to begin with.

As for the creepy factor- DA has definitely given me a few "well, better turn on some lights now!" moments. The first for me was in Orzommar when we hear Hespith:

First day they come, and catch everyone.
Second day they beat us, and eat some for meat.
Third day, the men are gnawed on again.
Fourth day we wait, and fear for our fate.
Fifth day they return, and it's another girl's turn.
Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams.
Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew.
Eighth day we hated, as she's violated.
Ninth day she does feast as she's become the beast.

That was... ugggh.... so creepy.  As was the first time I played DA2 when we see (SPOILER!) Hawke's zombie mom.  I was so, so sad, but soooo creeped out at the same time.  >.<

Also, thank you very, very much for digging for those pics! I'm even more excited about our forts than I already was.

Look at it this way: I'd rather use a character that was both hated and loved than one which nobody cared about either way. [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/wink.png[/smilie]

And this is something that gives me hope to have him in game!

Oh,
they'll definitely have him in game. They, at the very least, are
supposedly going to give him closure.   And while when I first read the
quote my hopes increased, DG most likely only meant that Cullen was in
the game, period... not necessarily as a companion.  It would be great
to have him as a companion- he certainly deserves it.

Did no one else, when hearing that poem, think...wait a minute...did I just hear that darkspawn rape women too? This s**t just got messed up!

Just going back to that possible leak with the Red Fist faction that our Inquisitor will supposedly seek advice from, if Cullen really is the leader, I wonder how he ended up forming his own little group?

I wonder if the Red Fists are made up of just Divine loyal ex-Templars? Or if it's a mixture of all sorts of people?

I know it doesn't explain how he got his group, but if it is Cullen in this picture then me thinking that those people running over the hill are Templars would make sense. I'm thinking maybe those are loyal ones from Kirkwall maybe? The ones that stood back with him when Meredith ordered Hawke dead. I mean no other Templar fought with her, just the statues, heh.

You know, a lot of the men in the ranks had major respect for him too. I remember hearing people in the game talk about it...just not sure where.

It would have been easy for him to take control of the Templars left in Kirkwall of the fall of Meredith.

@R2, Agreed, but does that (him staying with the chantry) mean he would be a seeker? And... didn't they leave the chantry too, come to think about it? So Cass, Leli and Cullen are freelancing by the start of the game. Yet we see lots of seekers around. Hmm, I'm confused (haven't read Asunder)...

According to DG,  you can think of the Seekers as the internal affairs division of the templars. Seekers are chosen from the elite of the templars and senior Seekers ultimately outrank any templar; so they're essentially the same thing. I think all you probably need to know from Asunder is the tip top head of the Seekers (and therefore the templars), the Lord Seeker, breaks the agreement  that said the Seekers and templars worked for the Chantry. So the "official" seekers and templars are technically doing their own thing, "dealing with the mage threat as [they] see fit." (Asunder, epilogue)

What that means for folks who still are loyal to the Chantry is anyone's guess. All we know is that World of Thedas makes a point of saying some still support the Chantry.
"9:40: Following the conflict at the White Spire, Lord Seeker Lambert cancels the Nevarran Accord, severing ties between the Seekers and the Chantry. Allegiances between Seekers and Templars are split. Some still support the Divine."
(DA: WoT, p.158)
I would presume a Divine-loyal faction would include individuals like Cass and Leliana, since we see them serving the Divine following the breaking of the Accord in DA2.

Now, after the split, who gets the rights to the Templar trademark and logo...? Maybe they all use it, for their own purposes? I could almost see someone like Cullen saying, "F*ck Lambert. F*ck the Seekers and their politics. I am a templar and I serve the Chantry."  Maybe adding in a "That's not what the Order stands for" for good measure. :P And that's that as far as he's concerned, including still wearing the uniform.

Maybe those things are red-lyrium golems? Templars who have volunteered to become infused with red lyrium the way dwarves were infused with lyrium alloys?

Holy cow... I both love and hate this idea... It def gives off creepy Hespith vibes for me... and so I won't re-quote that poem because it STILL gives me the heeby jeebies. :shudder:

Those big spikey red bad guys, the devs called it a "Behemoth" during the demo. I think it's definitely a demon, since it was one of the bad guys shown coming out of the veil in the trailer, and there was an outline of it under demons on that poster behind some old dude that got put on Twitter.

... I prefer the idea of it being a golem though, sounds more painful, LOL!

I'm not sure how hung up we should get about terminology. The demo video wasn't really intended to give in-depth details about the enemies, exactly. I'm not saying you're wrong! I just wouldn't be surprised if everything isn't as straightforward as it looks.

And the golem thing was pure speculation on my part. They look golem-like, but that means nothing... but if it was a golem, I wouldn't expect the devs to tell us. The Anvil of the Void was a big decision in the Orzammar plotline, and I'd imagine that making golems using unconventional materials would be a big deal.

And I kinda like the idea that it isn't just the demons misbehaving, that the humans are making some mischief on their own. But as I said, 100% wild speculation.

I think the Behemoth was a templar mutated by red lyrium. They call it a "Behemoth" for the same reason they call templar rogues (not to be confused with rogue templars) "hunters."

Or... they were using artistic license since it's big and calling it 'Behemoth' sounds fancy. Of note, it had no name above its health bar in the demo. So there's also a chance that's just a placeholder name.

Agree with you all that's it's probably more likely it's a demon, like the Profane we run into in the Deep Roads. But I also like the sinister feel of there being a master plan to their creation. If they're officially aligned with the Red Templar faction, then that would also follow  instead of them being a random demon possession.

So it could be the same thing that happened to Orsino, a demon possessed a Templar and he/she transformed into a monster due to the red lyrium.

If so, I just knew that when Hawke turned and walked out of the Gallows, leaving the statue of Meredith with the Templars, it was going to come back to bite everyone in the butt at some point!

Also, doesn't it speak to the mentality of some of the Templars that they took a look at what happened to Meredith and thought, "Oh yeah, I'm gonna want to get me some of that?!"

Cullen, you want to take care of the facepalm?

Oooo interesting! Bartrand says that the location of the thaig where they find the lyrium idol is worth a fortune on it's own. You can bet your arse he sold it's location to people, perhaps even Meredith, who most likely wrote it down somewhere.

My guess is there's gonna be red lyrium being used like mad in DA3. Prepare for some crazed red lyrium addled Templars!

Lola, folks are going to start to think you've been a Bioware insider this whole time if you keep guessing right... ;)

It certainly makes me wonder how much (or little) the Templars actually know about what happened to Meredith/red lyrium. Sounds like everything may have been hushed up. Which makes me wonder if Cullen has also been on the run, or if his warnings/reports were ignored for the rebelled Templars to be huffing the stuff like idiots.

Yeah, again, hard to say who knows what. I still maintain that no one asked Cullen the right questions or the official story would know a lot more. But, I'm still curious as to how much Cassandra knew about Meredith's red lyrium issue. I guess she knew about the idol already, so she must know... something.

You raise a good point of how much the truth is known or being covered up.

Then again, we are talking about being a Templar in Kirkwall after all. Seeing your boss go crazy and turn into a scary looking statue? It's not too far out of the normal for those guys.

I like to imagine that most of the Templars that Hawke encountered knew they were a Mage before the Qunari crisis, but were simply too jaded to care.

Well the Kirkwall Templars sided with Cullen, so chances are they are either still with him, or got "silenced". They probably won't be huffing red lyrium after seeing that. The rest of Thedas' Templars that rebelled are likely unaware that Meredith turned into a super nutjob, bounced around the Gallows and then turned into a husk, LOL.

I bet they've probably told them that Meredith was betrayed and murdered by Hawke with the aid of Cullen or something.

Yeah, I always headcanon that most of the Kirkwall templars who saw what happened must have died. The ones who rush in at the end, in principle, might not have been in the courtyard when Cullen confronted Meredith.

I also support the notion of a coverup. Meredith did not give the templars a good name.

Yeah, after the death glare that Mage Hawke shoots them, it's possible they believed Hawke turned her into a statue somehow and that's why they backed off.

Plus, unless you saw it happening, would any really believe that Meredith started jumping around the Gallows bringing statues to life? Had Meredith been a mage, then people would've probably believed it, but a Templar? Never. If those who stood by Cullen's decision to turn on Meredith really did get silenced/killed for insubordination then that really only leaves Cullen's word against the big guys (Lambert etc), since Hawke has disappeared and everyone else probably went to ground.

I'm guessing that there was some sort of cover up if the rebelled Templars are using/crafting red lyrium without a care in the world. As to how/why Cullen is still alive and kicking (which he clearly is, since we know GE has been in the studio recording Cullen's dialogue) is hopefully something he'll explain when our Inquisitor finally meets him.
