In the interest of fostering more speculation, here's a short, anonymously-written drabble exploring the founding of Red Templars. It's not mine, but by someone who does read the the thread (so be kind).

======

Dust specks slowly drift around the room, lighted by the sun streaming in through the windows. There is an echo in the large hall as Cassandra is interrogating the red Templar prisoner. Varric keeps giving the Inquisitor glances to see if he gives away any reactions to the incredible story that is being unraveled. But the Inquisitor seems unconcerned, instead considering a knife he is holding.

‘BULL****!’
Varric is startled by the sudden noise as Cassandra shouts and slams her fist on the table. He should have been expecting that from her. The Inquisitor doesn’t show any reaction at all.

‘But, I’m telling you! It’s… It’s all true. We first gathered the lyrium from the petrified corps of Night Commander Meredith.’ The prisoner is sweating, clearly under lyrium withdrawal. Funnily enough he was becoming more coherent as time passed. This was the second day of interrogation and he did seem a bit less crazy. A bit more smelly and shaky but a bit more sane. Varric wrinkles his nose at the stench that reaches him. Sweat, vomit, ****** and something not recognizable.

‘I was there! I was at Kirkwall after the Chantry was destroyed by the terrorist. You Templars still had a large supply of lyrium.’ Cassandra snorts disbelieving.

Varric shakes his head, this is getting nowhere. ‘What the Seeker means is; when did this happen and why?’ Cassandra flashes Varric an angry look for butting in. But Varric gets an encouraging nod from the Inquisitor so he proceeds.

‘How did you get hold of the lyrium in the first place? Who is your leader?’

‘The supply run down and these Chantry loyal Templars with that Carter in the lead grabbed what was left of the stash and then left Kirkwall. That happened right after the Seekers had been there.’ He is stumbling over the words now, trying to speak as fast as possible. Relieved that someone else than Cassandra is doing the probing now.

‘It was terrible, the withdrawal, the pain, the nightmares. You can’t possibly understand…’ The Red Templar starts to sob, clearly in agony just by the memory. Cassandra raises her eyebrows at Varric in a slightly surprised, complimentary expression.

‘That Bastard Cullen! He was supposed to lead us. He was supposed to help us, but he sent us all to our doom.’ The prisoner continues. Cassandra turns to the Inquisitor and fills in him on the rumor they'd all heard about Cullen.

‘We got reports while we were in Kirkwall that Knight Captain Cullen had step by step reduced his personal use of lyrium during the whole time he was stationed in Kirkwall. He managed to stop taking it completely after the Chantry incident and was clean by the time I met him.’

Varric nods. ‘I remember those dark circles under his eyes. He always looked like he hadn’t slept for a long , long time.’

‘Yes, yes! That was it, see’ The prisoner squeals, squirming on the edge of his chair.

‘We begged him for lyrium and he told us that we had Meredith to thank for all that happened. That maybe she should provide some as compensation.’

The prisoner gets a faraway look in his eyes. ‘We used to gather round her. There was a calling, a singing…’

Cassandra leans into the prisoner and with a low voice growls ‘So Cullen suggested you should harvest the petrified lyrium corpse of Knight Commander Meredith?’

The prisoner nods, tears running down his cheeks. ‘But the Knight Captain never used any, see. Only the rest of
us. He always stayed in full control.’

The Inquisitor looks up from the knife he has seemed so captivated by. ‘Cullen is the leader of the Red Templars?’

‘Yes’ the prisoner whispers as he slumps back into the chair, seemingly letting go of everything.

===
I don't personally subscribe to dastardly!Cullen, but there could be some fun conspiracy theories along these lines with "What Happened Next" after Hawke et al. left. I also love the notion that statue!Meredith would sing to people. Heh heh.

Yeah, after the death glare that Mage Hawke shoots them, it's possible they believed Hawke turned her into a statue somehow and that's why they backed off.

I reckon that regardless of whether Hawke was a mage/warrior/rogue, or who he/she sided with, the rumours going around the rebelled Templars will probably be that Hawke purposely planned to usurp Meredith (to either free the mages, or to put her out of the picture so that he/she could take control of Kirkwall), with the aid of Cullen who aided Hawke so that he could become Knight Commander, or something.

The fact that both Hawke and Cullen are Ferelden would probably be used against them, too.

Gawd, that would be a twist, wouldn't it! LOL! Man, I'd murder knife him myself if he really was the leader of the red Templars!

Going back to the red templars again, they kept talking about "him" (the big bad) and how we should join "him" etc. I wonder how they ended up working for the main antagonist? Maybe the red lyrium's singing made them susceptible to suggestion, or something? ... Either that or Lambert/who is now leading the rebel Templars is one of the big bad's agents?

I imagine that Meredith herself fostered many of the rumours about Hawke in order to limit their power within the city, since she seems intent to prevent Hawke becoming Viscount (as many other nobles want) or threatens to throw Mage Hawe in the Gallows the moment they no longer serve any purpose.

Perhaps the Mage Hawke in the Destiny Trailer is simply an in-universe rumour that they killed the Arishok using Blood Magic, the same thing they tried to do to the "heroic" Meredith who died trying to stop them overthrowing the Templars?

@R2, Agreed, but does that (him staying with the chantry) mean he would be a seeker? And... didn't they leave the chantry too, come to think about it? So Cass, Leli and Cullen are freelancing by the start of the game. Yet we see lots of seekers around. Hmm, I'm confused (haven't read Asunder)...

According to DG,  you can think of the Seekers as the internal affairs division of the templars. Seekers are chosen from the elite of the templars and senior Seekers ultimately outrank any templar; so they're essentially the same thing. I think all you probably need to know from Asunder is the tip top head of the Seekers (and therefore the templars), the Lord Seeker, breaks the agreement  that said the Seekers and templars worked for the Chantry. So the "official" seekers and templars are technically doing their own thing, "dealing with the mage threat as [they] see fit." (Asunder, epilogue)

What that means for folks who still are loyal to the Chantry is anyone's guess. All we know is that World of Thedas makes a point of saying some still support the Chantry.
"9:40: Following the conflict at the White Spire, Lord Seeker Lambert cancels the Nevarran Accord, severing ties between the Seekers and the Chantry. Allegiances between Seekers and Templars are split. Some still support the Divine."
(DA: WoT, p.158)
I would presume a Divine-loyal faction would include individuals like Cass and Leliana, since we see them serving the Divine following the breaking of the Accord in DA2.

Now, after the split, who gets the rights to the Templar trademark and logo...? Maybe they all use it, for their own purposes? I could almost see someone like Cullen saying, "F*ck Lambert. F*ck the Seekers and their politics. I am a templar and I serve the Chantry."  Maybe adding in a "That's not what the Order stands for" for good measure. :P And that's that as far as he's concerned, including still wearing the uniform.

Ah, I needed someone to walk me through that. Thanks. Posted Image All this actually makes me realize how curious I am about this game! Posted Image It's going to be so hard for it to live up to my expectations at this point, but I can't help myself.

Can I just ask you, you had a story in mind 2012 that was set in the same universe as Trust and... another one that I really liked. What happened to it..?

Interesting theory. I could understand the templars getting desperate as their lyrium ran dry and doing anything to get their fix, I really don't think it needs to be more complicated than that. Junkies do insane things when push comes to shove, and if they realized the statue was lyrium of some sort I think they would use it.

As for Cullen's involvement, I wonder what his motive would be..? Perhaps a demon did break him in Kinloch Hold and has been with him ever since (or he made some sort of trade back then)? That's really the only thing I could think of, but I must admit I'm starting to long for a villain that has their own agenda.

Could just be their pusher, so to speak. Desperate templars have started ingesting Meredith's corpse, but they run dry even of that eventually. So, now even more frantic with the world turning hazy from the red lyrium they are suddenly approached by someone who can hook them up. All they need to do is help him/her out with a few, small things.

Maybe they took a sample from Meredith to try and find out what happened, and it all went down hill from there? Personally, I think the rebel Templars probably got it from some dodgy Dwarven merchant looking to make a quick buck. What was that Dwarf's name who had the Qunari black powder? I bet it was probably him, or someone like him.

My pleasure (and glad I wasn't sounding annoying... my inner benevolent pedagogue gets out of hand sometimes!).

I'm also excited for what this means. SOOO many questions about what's going on with the Order, even without the red templars.

On my story that continues Trust... it's coming!  I've been in a writing rut the last couple of months, but I've  completed the first, I dunno, 50,000 words or so, up through and including the Trust scene so far! I wanted to get a bit further before I started posting it. But... here's the cover, as a teaser! :D

Javaris Tintop. I wouldn't put it past that slippery son-of-a-nug to attempt to sell red lyrium, even knowing the risks.

Why is everyone assuming that Cullen is with the red templars? After what he saw what happen to Meridith at the end of da2 do you guys really think that Cullen would resume to red lyrium?
