Laidlaw: I would almost say it’s a classic fantasy temptation. From there, there’s an enormously slippery slope which leads to cogs and large goggles. That’s cool. That’s a neat thing to do and it’s one way to take a franchise. But in our case, any time I’m asked that, I tend to say to myself, “What’s Minrathous like? What’s the capital of the Tevinter Empire like?” I’m kind of curious to find out.

I don’t think I need to go to a different time to see something different. I’ve never been to Antiva. I don’t know what Rivain is like. I’ve never been to the homeland of the Qunari. There’s so much still left out there. There are so many other cool issues we can explore. I don’t necessarily see the future or the past to be places that we need to go digging just yet. There’s so much more stuff that I’d like to explore."

I've been suspecting for a very, very long time that we'd stay in mostly Orlais and perhaps parts of Ferelden.

There's another possibility, that the "I" in ML's statement is meant to represent the player (who obviously has never been to all those places). But I'm not sure.

Also I think he just dissed steampunk lol

Not to derail the conversation, but I finally finished Asunder! *throws confetti* Hot d*mn, I am so super pumped for DA:I now! Cole is friggen awesome...whatever the hell he is lol. I really hope he gets to be a companion in the next game, they seem to have set him up nicely with that last bit in the epilogue.

<3 Cole is super awesome ^_^ Welcome to the club!

Yeah, there have  been suggestions of that... so I guess I'm staying with that picture: Orlais and Ferelden. Still hoping for a bit of a Free Marches (*cough*Starkhaven*cough*).

And, I totally didn't catch the steampunk ref! Derp. I was thinking cogs as in big machinery of the lore/world/game.

Interesting follow up to the Caroline Livingstone twitter request for VO actor suggestions. The tweet was traveling around tumblr, and resulted in this exchange.

Dwarva (Staarbux on BSN): I thought the voice acting had all been done by now?
genevrael (Cori May, BW editor): Not at all. Nowhere near. So please do offer suggestions.

So, how about all of you?? Would you dress Cullen back in a skirt? Or are you ready to give him some pants? :D

Same :D I really dislike DA heavy armor; it's clunky and ridiculous. I've been spoiled by other games that have nicer looking heavy armor ^^

I like this part from the rockpapershotgun article:

RPS: You’ve mentioned that romances are going to break outside the box of traditional “BioWare romances.” They’ve been described as more “event-based.” What does that mean? Do you reach this point in the game/romance and this thing happens, next point, this thing happens?

Laidlaw: No, no, I wouldn’t say so. It’s just attempting to get away from the idea of, “Oh, +10, and here’s a gift, +5.” Getting away from that kind of raw, mechanical, insert happiness event kind of stuff. So event-based is more just a general approach.

RPS: So when you talk to them, things happen. You advance standing with people through interactions, conversations, and whatnot?

Laidlaw: Yeah.

RPS: Sounds sensible! Thank you for your time.

Yay! More normal interactions for romance.

I saw that, too, and it makes me wonder how a romance really will play out. The gift-giving was an Origins thing, while the "event kind of stuff" was more DA2. So how will a romance be initiated, and how will it progress? I'm super eager to find out :D

I'm hoping that doesn't mean we'll have to have our LI with us at all times. Because there were definitely a few times in DA2 that I was glad I could leave the LI back at base (especially when friend-mancing Merrill and destroying the Evil Tomes).

I just made a Twitter account so I could tell the lady that's looking for voice actors to make sure she had Greg Ellis for Cullen. How sad am I? lol

Oooh, I love it! Not him suffering, but the whole doubting and anger. It would be interesting to see how he would deal with not being in the Order anymore. Would he be just like "Screw, all of you! Mages and Templars alike." or would he be hateful toward any of them? Toward the Mages for Ferelden (but I do think he is over that mostly) or the Templars for Kirkwall (I could see him being bitter, that the order had betrayed him. It was all he knew, it's like pulling the rug out from under his feet) Or he is just staying loyal to his views of the templar order, without the corruption, the one that protects the Mages from the people and the people from Mages.

Many different ways for him to go. Looking forward to finding it out Image IPB

Wouldn't a (ex) Templar be interested in the events? Image IPB

I wonder what Varric reasons are for being there, I really am. He just always had such a neutral stance on everything, other than the "Hanged Man", I just don't see why he would involve himself, unless it's about Hawke maybe?

Thanks.. Image IPB I think he's pretty much over what happened in Ferelden too, but on the other hand Kirkwall mages probably didn't get that many stars in his book either. Image IPB I think he would look at all the chaos going on on both sides, take a deep breath, and then work his ass off to try and fix it (get it back to where it was). Your third option sounds the most like him, but on the other hand people change.

Yeah, that's an awesome thing about him; he already has lots of fans, yet the writers could take him almost anywhere.

As for that article, I agree. A templar would be very vested. I also think a templar is a good thing to have on the team when it comes to gameplay, mages being the best anti-mage solution I find a bit silly. Oh, and it doesn't seem like they know why Varric is there either. Image IPB "Well, he's.. clearly very passionate.."

HUH! Finally reading through that article in full. Am I reading this right?? Is Mike Laidlaw confirming here that we won't see Tevinter, Rivain, or the Qunari homeland in DAI? They've always given vague answers about staying "to the south."

For what it's worth, I don't think the new game factors in when talking about where we've been so far. Sure, he's seen it, but the series hasn't been there yet. He's just pulling locations out of his ass to show that there's no need to do time skips. Oh, and thanks for the kind words!

LolaLei wrote...

Tbh, it kinda seems like Varric is only a companion again because he was one of the few things about DA2 that a vast number of people actually liked (damn haters). Plus, I guess because DAI looks and feels so different, I guess they wanted someone familiar along for the ride with who the player already knows well and can relate to.

This is what I think as well. And, really, I don't mind. The man had some time over when Hawke left, decided to save the world..? We've all been there. Image IPB

Agree 100% here. As much as I loved using Mana Clash and just owning Mages with it, I would have loved it more for Alistair to be my "Mage Destroyer", make Templars more fearsome in that way, give them Mana Clash. Make Mages more resistant to magic so you need a melee person to go in there and whoop their behind. RAWR! ^_^
