You know what I found interesting in a recent playthrough of DA2... when you go to confront Bartrand at the mansion, the servant dwarf that you run into right before the final fight mentions that Bartrand was forcing the other guards to actually eat the red lyrium and it made them crazy.

Oh wow, nice catch. Yeah, it might be worth re-watching those scenes at Bartrand's house. Did just holding it make Bartrand crazy, or was he eating it as well?meanieweenie wrote...
Good eye, R2. I'm anxious to see more of the red Templar artwork now. So maybe this does have to do with how they're mutated or maybe even controlled in some way.

You know, I was thinking something like that, too, that it's similar to the profane. That could be!Sifr1449 wrote...
You don't suppose they could possessed by the same kind of creature or demon responsible for creating Profanes? A horde of Templars taking Red Lyrium out of the Primeval Thaig, bump into Rock Wraiths as they leave, calamity and much Red Lyrium weirdness naturally ensues... cue BrundelFly?

I don't think Bartrand was eating it as well but it doesn't specifically say he wasn't. I think he was just feeding it to the guards and slicing pieces off of the other servants. From what I recall, Bartrand was trying to get everyone else to hear the lyrium singing as he was.R2s Muse wrote...

is the red lyrium have the same effect for humans as it does for dwarfs tho? Cause for example in act 3 when u do Varrics mission in the haunted house he claim that the red lyrium makes him hear music or singing but Hawke and all the other humans didn't hear it
From what we've seen, contrary to other forms of lyrium which Dwarves are more resistant to than Humans, it seems that with Red Lyrium, Humans might be more resistant (at least initially) to it's effects.
Hawke briefly handled it before throwing it to Bartrand and suffered no ill-effects, while Bartrand had it only for a few seconds before being compelled to lock them into the Thaig.
Hawke and the others doesn't hear any singing, while Varric does, acting strangely and on edge simply by being in proximity to the shard.
Despite having access to the Idol and later wearing it as a great big honking sword on her back, Meredith remained functional (albeit increasingly ruthless) for at least three years before she finally succumbed to madness.
Since DA:I is implied to be picking up three years after the events of Gallows... any Templars who've come into contact on a regular basis, are more than likely to have gone nuts.

RED LYRIUM
A more potent form of lyrium, red in color, was recently discovered in the Deep Roads. Its strength is such that possessors may be imbued with magiclike power, regardless of whether or not they are a mage. Contact comes at a cost, however, as the greater power presents greater dangers. Red lyrium’s potency is such that it corrupts all minds eventually, even normally resistant dwarves.
Red lyrium was first found during an expedition into a long uninhabited thaig in 9:31 Dragon. The infamous Champion of Kirkwall, known as Hawke, led the expedition into the Deep Roads near Kirkwall, and discovered giant veins of the mineral pushing through cavern walls from some unknown source. An idol carved from the red lyrium was brought to the surface.
The discovery played an important role in the templar-mage crisis in Kirkwall six years later. Templar Knight-Commander Meredith Stannard, already hostile towards mage activity in the city state, used red lyrium to gain the strength to take on a mage rebellion following a rogue mage’s destruction of the local chantry. It appeared as through the power of the lyrium corrupted Stannard’s mind. She was killed in an ensuing battle with Hawke.

Hmm, interesting idea about dwarves being particularly susceptible to red lyrium. That WOULD be a twist! The World of Thedas entry made it sound, to me anyway, that dwarves would be as susceptible or less than any other race... but of course it doesn't actually say that.Sifr1449 wrote...

On Bartrand betraying them after just a few seconds, I also wonder if that's like the effects of the One Ring. Where it tried to corrupt both Hawke and Bartrand, but Bartrand's more, um, entrepreneurial nature succumbed faster.

Methinks its not common knowledge around Thedas of Meredith's transformation into a statue/husk.

I like the idea it's a corrupting influence on base desires.
Bartrand came on the expedition hoping to get rich and was only in it to satisfy his own greed, while Hawke came on the expedition to acquire wealth to protect and care for their family, making their motives more selfless, meaning it had less of an effect on them.

That's probably not far off the mark. I mean, Bartrand was mad on making money, so he locked his brother 'n' Hawke in that room so that he could take the treasures for himself and was generally a selfish man. Meredith was already a bit drunk on power and very paranoid about the whole mage issue, so when she got the idol she became even worse. It seems to amplify their corruption.

I've been thinking about how Inquisition will start. For some reason, since Bioware said they were going to work Exalted March into the game, I keep thinking that it starts with the end of Kirkwall. People are trying to leave the city after all of the unrest, they know something big is coming. Leliana, Cassandra and Varric are all already there. Varric runs after Cassandra and tells her he wants to go with her, for whatever reason, and she begrudgingly accepts. There are still Alienage elves, humans, dwarves, and even Qunari left in the area. Our character could spring from one of those, fleeing from Kirkwall to avoid the March. Varric and Cassandra run into our character, a la Aveline and Wesley, and somehow trust is gained, and they continue on to Val Royeaux together. And then somewhere in there the Fade veil rips, demons come pouring out, and the Inquisition is born.
...Just speculating.

Hard to say. I mean, they probably wouldn't want to make it too similar to the start of DA2.
The devs said that our character witnesses how the veil rips open, and (I think) it was Mike Laidlaw said something like in some instances it we actually play a part in it. Which makes me think that we will get some sort of playable prologue. I wonder if we'll actually get to choose whether or not we played a part in the veil getting torn open. Kinda like in the mage origin in DA:O where you can either help Jowan try to escape the circle, or tell the First Enchanter about it.

LOL Speaking of red lyrium, just noticed a kinda cool thing in the red lyrium demon's outfit. We've seen elsewhere that he seems to be some kind of mutated templar, with the templar breastplate just visible on his chest.

This one makes me realize, as I wondered why a demon would need a skirt to cover his nether regions, that he may be wearing a tattered templar skirt. Huh!
Maybe it wants to be people?

Also, I realize now that "skirt" would be a better description than "loincloth." My brain needs more coffee.
Even as mutated horrors, mages must wear skirts. Theirs is truly a sad lot.

I'm convinced the main reason why mages become abominations is due to the lack of choice when it comes to their wardrobe. Ugly hats, bath robes...it's a curse all in its own.

Altho, I thought MLaw (or was it Darrah?) said that we wouldn't know the extent of our involvement in the breach, which suggests against something playable that (at least fully) explains our role in the veil rip.LolaLei wrote...

Intriguing... I wonder if that means we'll be suffering some sort of amnesia at the start? Kinda like in KOTOR where we didn't realise that we were originally a bad guy.

Do you have the original link to the dev that said it?
