To be fair, Alistair is one heck of a special snowflake too, what with the dragon blood, being the heir/king of Ferelden, and the comics he was just heavily featured in.

The only thing that really bothered me out of any of the companions we've had so far was Tallis, but that's just because it was like she was supposed to be smarter, tougher, stealthier, more seductive, cuter etc than all the other companions, and literally could do no wrong to the point that not even npcs that would (in theory) have something insulting to say to her, simply didn't. Felt a bit like a fanfic written for Felicia Day's own personal character.

Hahaha! I remember thinking exactly that the first time I played the human noble origin.

(I also remember thinking, "Dang he's cute! I wonder if I can romance him?" Sadly, no.)

Theres a Ser Gilmore Mod where he lives and you can romance him. Its even voiced but some of the dialogue is cringe worthy. :pinched:

I hope we can switch and change them in game, it would be cool to be able to change our hair whenever we wanted, just like we do in real life.

Speaking of the CC, one of the devs asked how long people spend making their characters in games with a character creator.

Hm, could be it's revelant because she might die (either as an option by our hand, or in general), or just revelant because it's Morrigan and he's working on her stuff right now.

Could also be the "Morrigan's life" part... the kid crying over her death is too much for me, tho... If they go there... hmm... <_<

Lets just say there are alternate things that can happen regarding Morrigan...

What would be interesting to me is, what if she has the wardens or Alistair's kid. And she dies. Would she ask Inq to search for said father? Or would she plea for you to take care of the kid for her? Maybe she doesn't want the baby daddy to raise the kid. Specially if the father is a King.

I wonder if Cullen is a party memember, how he'd react to you helping with either scenario.

Maybe, she knows of Flemeth's ritual to enter another body...

If the kid is the wardens, I wonder if there would be a cameo or something. All of this could lead to most of us crying our eyes out lol

But, if she doesn't have a child, I wonder if the warden would make an appearance, if you had a male warden that had a romance with her.

Still, the child thing. I would like to know if you would end up with a quest where you got to find Alistair/warden in the deep roads or something like that. But if Alistair/Warden was made king, would they want their bastard child. Hmmmm so interesting the possibilities that could occur with such a scenerio.

And Cullen, if he's trying to protect mages from the crazy red Templars, I could see him becoming very protective of this child

I do wonder how they'll deal with the child. I sorta feel like, as far as closure is concerned, that ship has sailed for me. I really felt like that's what Witch Hunt was supposed to be. I went into it brimming with questions and concerns about my husband's bastard child, looking for closure, and came away with... nothing. Now that DA:I rolls around . . . I'm not my Warden anymore, so tying up the OGB storyline doesn't have nearly the emotional resonance  it might have had. I do look forward to seeing what Morrigan's master plan was... but I don't think it would ever be the same as the missed opportunity that was Witch Hunt, IMO. *sigh*

Not gonna lie, despite DG's insistance to the contrary, I do feel like DAI is seemingly pandering to certain fan groups just because DA2 and ME3 caused such a controversy.

Pity they don't seem to be pandering to us, lol.

LOL I guess pandering is fine... so long as they're pandering to you! :o:lol::lol:

Yeah, hard to say. Morrigan has always been the DA poster child, so I suppose it's unsurprising that we're seeing her again. Aaaaand, she's the hotty lady that AAA videogames need on their covers. Makes all kinds of  cents sense.

Alistair is a special snowflake *outside* the game, though. In canon, his role is limited by player import saves... which means they really can't do much with him at all in any kind of official capacity. And unlike Morrigan and Leliana, he wasn't supplied with plot armor, so if he died slaying the Archdemon, he stays dead. Which makes it hard for him to have any kind of meaningful impact on the game world.

I'm hoping that the only reason M & L are there is to give them a way to write them out of the story without invoking all kinds of crazy fan rage. I wonder what would happen if players found out that M & L dumped the Warden as soon as they got what they wanted out of the arrangement. Alistair will dump a Warden who isn't a human noble if he's made king, so it isn't as if they have a history of holding protagonist relationships sacred. It won't happen, I know, but it is something to think about.

Anyway, this is starting to sound like sour grapes, and that isn't what I was aiming for. :pinched:

Has there been any word about Cullen while I've been out of town? I don't expect them to have announced anybody else... but you never know.

That's true, I hadn't thought of that. I'm guessing that Cassandra is going to be another one that'll be a special snowflake, given her background history already.

I really can't fathom why Morrigan is specifically so important to the story? I mean, if it's something to do with Flemeth, then why can't Flemeth fill that role herself? And obviously it's not to do with the OGB because that's just an option. Did she maybe discover something whilst knocking about in the Fade that could be of use to the Inquisitor? I've no idea.

I really agree with this, to the point where they are not even mentioning DA2 in marketing. It's like they are on their hands and knees begging the DA:O extreme fanboys to come back to them. It's sickening!!!

The Morrigan thing does seem a bit suspect, not that I mind her being a big part of it either way. I dunno, I kinda feel like that since The Witcher 3 is also coming out at the same time, and is being heavily compared to DAI that they're really pushing the boat out and trying to please a lot of people.

It's just a shame that the Cullen fandom isn't as big as the other fandoms. If it was then maybe we would've got Cullen back in DA2 or something.

Same. She's starting to smell a little like Tallis.  "Why is this character in the game?"  "Um, was this game created just to star this character?"  "I don't like this character... why does she keep showing up?!?!"

Seriously, WTF does Morrigan have to do with Orlais and the mage v. templar war?  What does Morrigan have to do with anything other than her own personal gain? Which was fine for her as a character (I liked that about her; made her unique.) But I just don't see how she even belongs in this game.

And to be honest, same goes for Alistair, Zevran, Leliana, Wynne, Shale, and Oghren. Their game is OVER! I honestly don't want to see them again.

I don't even really want to see my sweetheart Fenris  (lol) again unless it's a minor cameo with Hawke at his side. I don't want him integral to the plot or anything.

As a character, she's OK, but as far as I'm concerned her story ended two games ago. In my games, she's the one my Warden's lover had to screw to keep both of them alive. And I'm supposed to look forward to her return... why? In terms of emotional investment, I'm just not feeling it. It's rather like going to an awards banquet in honor of your husband's ex.

They keep turning the male protagonists' lovers into these godlike mythic figures that will impact the world for generations to come... and they never give the players of female protagonists a reason to care about them. While the male LIs I do care about are relegated to insignificant cameos that reek of fanservice.

Perspective is so beautiful, I love hearing when others feel the complete opposite of what I feel! =D

I've always felt that it's almost as if male gamers have little to get hyped over. I tend to focus a lot more on the female characters cause I tend to relate to and look up to them more easily. So when I see Morrigan returning (especially after having a beautiful scene such as this in DAO), I get psyched.

Sure it's good for the guys who romanced her, I guess. But I feel like I'm even luckier. I got to shag Alistair -and- be Morrigan's BFF. And now she's back. She's unromanceable, so there's not much to yay for when it comes to romance factor. But me who never romanced her, who simply loved her as a character and not much more, I get to enjoy even more Morrigan goodness with no losses compared to DAO.

And there's other really cool women too. The awesome Leliana also returns in the franchise, not to mention the strong Cassandra is now a companion after having her own film!

I do not at all mean to belittle your perspective, I merely shared mine. Cause I think it is interesting how two persons can see the same thing and react so differently. I hope you agree and don't feel like I'm trying to tell you my perception is better than yours cause that was not my intent =)

LolaLei wrote...

My theory, and please recognise I don't let the outside world suffer my fanfiction for a reason, is that Morrigan is a self-sacrificing, noble hero who carries the weight of the world's greatest problems on her shoulders. Without asking for anybody to recognise her actions or look for thanks. Flemeth has taught her something, and Morrigan is acting based on that knowledge. Whether she is properly rebelling against Flemeth or if Flemeth wanted her to dance to this tune all along and just played her strings, I don't know. That would decide whether Flemeth is opposed to Morrigan or not, I suppose.

If they are opposed, then certainly both witches need to be around to play their respective hands. Seeing as Morrigan seemingly travels dimensions to reach what she needs, it's not odd that she would somehow be related or have an interest in the Veil being torn. Perhaps she supports this, perhaps she opposes it, and perhaps she is ambivalent but needs to be around to see that nothing goes wrong in the big clash.

She mentions a war in The Fires Above trailer, which I believe may be a war she has watched or even taken part of without any of us knowing. And now as the Fade spills into the mortal world, her fight also intertwines with Thedas.

So why did I make Morrigan a power ranger in my head? This line from Witch Hunt, when asked by the Warden if what she wants is to be set free; "What I want is... is unimportant now." It's a line that seemingly, to me, stresses that she is doing something out of a sense of duty and obligation. Something terrible, difficult, yet something she cannot leave to live her life as she pleases. Why else the sadness in her voice?

But... yeah. I'll spare you further ramblings of my fanfiction. :?

Yeah, as much as it annoys me, that's true, and I can't really blame the marketing time. I just grit my teeth every time I see "From the makers of Dragon Age: Origins....!"  Dude, why are you referencing a four year old game?! That honestly has not really stood the test of time. (I'm talking vanilla, non-modded version here.)

And yes about Cullen. Can you imagine if female fans were taken seriously by marketing teams? The DA team couldn't even understand why we were annoyed that no one pointed out that the DA:I protag could be female as well as male. Yes, um, that's kind of important! Sure, us hardcore fans know that, but what about other female fans out there? I was not always a DA fan. Maybe if they had marketed to me, I would have come into the fold sooner and not stumbled into it by chance!

Can't possibly imagine the writers bringing back a male character to please the female fans. Varric is only back because he was everyone's favorite bro.

It's fine to love Morrigan, and it's 100% true that BW creates amazing female characters. But no way is Morrigan back (and being heavily advertised as being back) for you or me. It's for the straight male players.

You know, one good thing to take away from all of this... is if Cullen is in the game, you know it will be because he's considered significant and interesting, and not because he's being shoved in there to please us. So I feel kind of confident now that his character will be true and not just fan bait :)
