From what I've read, Gaider and Cori May both seem like they like Cullen. And the fact he's now got a last name, there's not many non-companions I can think of who's last name we actually know. Except for the dwarves, obviously.

The last name is curious to me. I don't know if it was just Gaider joking/trollin', but what it makes me wonder is if Cullen is no longer part of the Order, thus he hasn't got a rank or title like "Knight Captain" or "Knight Commander", so he's started using his Surname when introducing himself because bowling up the Inquisitor and saying "Nice to meet you, I'm Cullen!" Wouldn't be respectable enough (in his mind) when meeting with someone as important as our protagonist.

That's just my theory, though.

I thought they actually said something like they would like to explore Cullen further? Ah well, we'll see. So far Cullen has been both 2h (DA:O) and s&s (DA:2), so I guess that won't stop him from fitting in somewhere. When it comes to the crowds opinions: most people seem to think he is 'boring', but that is an easy thing to call if you have not had a chance to get to know him, imo...

I can't see how he can be considered as boring when he's not have enough screen time to even know what he's really like as a person, let alone what secrets his past holds... as if his torture and killing Meredith wasn't gnarly enough!

Exactly! That is why I think it will just depend on the opinion of the devs (and maybe whether or not they want to do something with the exceptional support for a 'minor' npc) whether or not we will see him as a companion. If the devs want him in, there is always a possibility. The Seeker/Templar card could switch both ways, as we have discussed a few pages back, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

If there's anything that worries me into thinking Cullen might not be a companion, that's actually a post of Jennifer Hepler's on the Kickstarter for Ambrov X. I quote;

"And the reality is that on a large game, things change – followers get cut, or downgraded to non-romanceable, or gender-swapped. And in a party-based RPG, it has to be gameplay that guides such decisions – whether a follower is the much-needed mage or rogue is often more important than how well-written they are, or how much their personal arc might get under your skin."

I just can't help but feel that this part of her longer post came from somewhere. Seeing as she wrote Cullen previously, it wouldn't be surprising if she would be reprising the role of writing him. Cullen was in the original leak where those polled got to rate how interesting they found various characters, and he is most likely of the class that seems to have the most contenders... add this all together and it's hard to not get a little pessimistic to me.

But I still hold hope! =)

You were one of those invited for the actual dinner? I'm so jealous~ =) Sounds like it was a lot of fun from what I read. Well, aside from the technical issues.

I only got there for the after party, myself.

I sat next to Evil Chris. Epiiiic! :kissing:
If you are at Gamex on the Friday maybe we can meet up?

So Lola what happened at that event that was so bad? :?

You sat next to Huggable Chris? I am so jelly =D

And sure, I'm all up for meeting up! I'll be there all days.

But I do pick up that they are baffled by Cullen's popularity. Being baffled about other people's fascination with one's own character is troubling (for that character). I mean if I ever got my act together and edited and published one of my stories, and suddenly people became obsessed with this minor character who appears in three chapters for five paragraphs, I wouldn't suddenly feel inspired to write a whole novel about that guy.

Turn that frown upside down, didn't David state in an interview a while ago that there is a lot that could be explored through/with Cullen's character? I'm wary to say exactly what he said, or even that he said it, but I remember reading something like that and remembering the old interview where David had said the interest in Cullen was baffling to him.

And when I think about why there would be such a contrast... that'd either be,
1) A different developer talking and giving their own thoughts; my memory's just off
2) Proof that the writers have gotten inspired and changed their minds about Cullen after reviewing old material/forum posts
3) PR speech to ensure no fans are disappointed this early

Hmmm, well Hepler could always be talking about Velanna in DA2. She was supposed to fulfil the role Anders filled. And didn't she write Anders in DA2?

I recall seeing an article somewhere in which Hepler mentioned that we'd definitely find out what happened to Cullen after the events of DA2. So I guess they had plans for him ever since they finished DA2... but what they may be is anyone's guess.

I suppose she could have been referring to Velanna, yeah. Makes sense since she was indeed gender-swapped as well. Wasn't dropped as an LI however.

She indeed wrote Anders. Also Bethany, Leandra, Elthina, Cullen, and Sebastian according to the DA wiki.

I wonder who Hepler wrote for DAI? I know she's left BioWare now to work as a lead writer at some other upcoming indie developer on a game loosely based around Star Trek or something.

It didn't get anywhere near funded though. Pity, it looked cool.

Personally, I wouldn't rule out Cullen. (Even if he's not a companion, (which he IS!)) To have a recording session for his character, he'll need lines! Preferably love interesty lines!

Oh, gawd. So does that mean the game won't get made then? I'm guessing Hepler won't be able to pick up where she left off and return to BioWare?

Sebastian was half-romanceable (I'll put it mildy... ), so maybe she referred to him as the 'downsized' companion? Or perhaps Varric, as I recall having read somewhere that he was supposed to be romanceable, but that was dropped.

Ambrov X is looking into alternative ways of getting revenue at the moment. The official story goes that they never expected the Kickstarter to fund the full game, but they were hoping for the best to be able to make a game as good as they possibly could. I'm sceptical to that story, but I'm hoping it will come out one way or the other even so. It seemed fantastic.

Hepler didn't leave BioWare to work on Ambrov X though. She left for other reasons and just happened to be contacted about Ambrov X later.

Lol, I figured there was more to her leaving than that. I don't like to pry though... not that they'd tell us anyway, since it's none of our business.

"...OH CRAP WHAT IF NATE'S NOT ON THERE?!"

I think what he means is that all the other Warden's we've seen (like Alistair, our Warden, Anders, Nathaniel etc) all had different fate options, since we had the option to kill all of them/or (like Duncan) they died no matter what. However, Stroud was only introduced in DA2 and we only met him briefly, thus we had no option to control the fate of his life.

So basically, it doesn't mean that they're suggesting that the other's lives are on the line, but that the only one who is definitely 100% alive (because we had no option to kill him) is Stroud.

Mine met Stroud once, when Alistair popped up with him doing "Wardeny things" during the Qunari invasion. Seems nice enough, lol.

Wouldn't mind it if Stroud turned out to be Warden McBeardface. Always thought he looked Ferelden though. He could have been a Marcher, but if he's Stroud...Is he Orlesian? I forget...

Warden de la Beardfacé?

It's possible. Maybe he grew his 'tache out?

Duh, I was having a brainfart when thinking about Stroud, sorry XD I somehow thought that he would show up instead of Nathaniel... (Thanks for a wiki if one gets confused...) Ah well, let's just say that Strouds two seconds of screentime did not make a huge impression?

But to me, Stroud does not appear to be the same guy as McBeardface. He strikes me as either Fereldan or Anders, not at all Orlesian like Stroud is.

I agree. (I think it's the beard!) But in the concept art, he is/was about to be hanged by the looks of it, maybe he's been a prisoner for some time, didn't have chance for decent Orlesian grooming?

True, but he is still having his beard in the tavern scene, so I guess he likes his beard enough and does not care if it is not perfectly groomed.

Something totally different: started up another DA:O game as a mage and just landed into Lothering. A comment of ser Bryant made me think about our favorite templar. It was something along the lines of 'Of course I know you are a mage. I would be a very bad templar if I didn't', as my character never mentioned it herself. I mean, there is a lot of complaining that Cullen would be very blind to not see that Hawke is a mage.... but now I am really convinced that he ignores it on purpose. Bryant doesn't give a damn either, so why couldn't Cullen do the same, for whatever reason he has? Now I'll imagine the 'mages are not people like you and me'-line to come along with a big wink or something else to show that he actually knows what is going on, but will not act upon it.
