I'm thinking he's definately military. The city guards are the cops, there to arrest people for stealing your crap and stopping fights. The Templars have more of a "divine mission", if you will. They'll stop a crime if they see it, but thier main purpose is more of a world wide keep the peace with the mages and all.

Edit for typing in the dark and bad spelling! lol

Heh, interesting to think of the mages as the "enemies of the state" in this case then, she says provocatively yet all the while nodding in agreement. :)

And, gah, I also hate typing in the dark! It's amazingly hard, even as a touch-typer!

Well, I recall Cullen (or someone) mentioning during DA2 that the Templars also serve as an army, so maybe they are kinda like soldiers? I always thought of the City Guard to be the equivalent of a police force.

Unless the Templars are kinda like the equivalent of Mulder & Skully, dealing with magic and "other worldly" incidences lol. Let's not forget the blind Templar who was investigating paranormal events in the Alienage, I guess they do more than just fight abominations and watch over mages.

Yes, Cullen himself notes that the templars are the largest army in the city and so would defend it against the Qunari. But, I think that's also not strictly their role, right? In Kirkwall, they've sort of overstepped their bounds.

I think the City Guard are definitely more like the police. But, I'm still a bit torn as to where the templars really fall. Maybe they're like the FBI (going with  your M&S analogy) with merely broader law enforcement jurisdiction. But then, their hierarchies and such do seem much more militaristic.

So here's a question.

What do you think the cause of Cullen's dark pinkish/red circles around his eyes are?

I can't actually recall if he had them in DA:O since it was always so dark when we saw him. At first I thought maybe it was down to lack of sleep, but then I noticed Samson had them too. Thrask on the other hand didn't but he is clearly older than Cullen so maybe it's not a typical side effect to taking lyrium? In which case, does that mean perhaps the lyrium is starting to negatively effect him, like the old Templar from DA:O? Or could it be due to lyrium abuse or lyrium withdrawal? Or perhaps it's simply due to stress?

Honestly, I first thought they were a *wink wink* and a *nudge nudge* at the Twilight/Cullen vampires also having dark circles, but you're right - Samson did have them too, so hmm... that does sound like lyrium addiction. However I don't remember Sers Alrik or Thrask having the dark circles, so maybe Samson just had them because he was a lowlife.

Regardless, we can all agree that Cullen makes those dark circles look good. Image IPB

I should go.

So I just have to say that I love this. Also that we have Tim Horton's in Michigan and stop there every year on my birthday during our annual pilgrimmage to Ann Arbor for a Wolverine's game. Does that make me a good Canadian? Image IPB

I support the theory that the dark circles are due to lyrium intake, and the side effect is being visited in their dreams by demons and such. But the reason they get them is because Templars aren't naturally magic user, which would explain why mages don't get the dark circles.

Oh, and meanie, Steve Irwin is Australian. I'm a New Zealander. Mistaking one for the other is like mixing an American up with a Canadian. But I agree, R.I.P Mr. Irwin. May you continue wrestling with crocodiles in Heaven :-(

See... this is what happens when I hit the crack pipe on week nights. My mistake. For some reason I read 'Australia' rather than New Zealand. You're right - completely different animal! Image IPB

Yeah, none of the other templars have them, tho. I still think it 's just unique to him and reflects his past suffering in Ferelden. It doesn't  mean that you don't also get them from being in lyrium withdrawal, but I think it's a little early for him for that, recalling how old Greagoir was.

So, just to try and draw some people back in, what song can you see Cullen singing? Either to the DA3 protagonist or randomly.

I'm actually really hoping they have him sing at some point, like maybe catch him humming a song and when we ask him what song it is, he'd not know and kinda suggest that it was something his mother used to sing to him as a young child/baby before she died/abandoned him or whatever. Or maybe have him sing as part of a quest to draw away attention to the protagonist/other companions whilst they infiltrate/steal something (kinda like the mini rescue quest in DA:O.) That being said, it would be hilarious if they made it so Cullen is a terrible singer and he'll tell us embarrassing stories about all the times he had to mime during Chantry services lol.

If he was to sing it would probably be some Chantry/Andrastian song, or maybe a crude ditty he'd heard during his time as a Templar sung loudly and badly whilst drunk lol.

OMG OMG OMG!!! So, I found some tweets from a little while back (March/April/May time) from one of the DA devs Alain Baxter during their sprint review days. These tweets are more detailed than Mark Darrah's and I seriously think they're heading in the right direction with DA3:

Scripting, bug fixing, better pathfinding. Thought: Have followers pathfind to bugs and step on them. Dev achievement? #SprintReviewDay

Floor vibrating, whispers in the dark, creeping doors and haunting dreams changing landscapes. Audio rules! #SprintReviewDay

Different landscapes and terrain. Potential: players actions changing ecosystems.#SprintReviewDay

Mud bubbles, beams and slow downs. Wicked animations, creature prototypes and everyone's favourite, rag doll. #SprintReviewDay

Eyes, tinting, crafting, weather effects. "my god! It's full on eyes" #SprintReviewDay

Concepts again wow me. The hardest part is knowing not all will make the game... #SprintReviewDay

Dialogue with facial expressions. NPCs can be understood with or without words.#SprintDayReview

First time I've been excited by concepted chairs, tables & furnaces.#SprintDayReview

Making building blocks fun and creative, then combining them to make more then the sum is awesome. Well done combat team! #SprintDayReview

Projectiles, bounce bounce, Wham! Boxes falling over. VFX & Combat for the win! #SprintDayReview

Environments, castles, puzzles and activities. Great presentations and using gameplay to prove accomplishments. #SprintDayReview

Best line "... make audio cleaner was our past goal... but let's bring back the dirt." Also, best use of starwipes ever! #SprintDayReview

Story, narrative overviews & green lit pitches. In my mind I'm beginning to hear their voices... #SprintDayReview

Concept of a *****, image of follower ***** and a shot of *****. Awesome stuff. Someday we'll show this stuff. #SprintDayReview

Nude meshes, inventory and loot tables. The image used for the meshes may take years of therapy to recover from. #SprintDayReview

Landscapes, puzzles, skyboxes. Best line: " ... these oranges are too shiny, they need to be dirty Ferelden oranges" #SprintDayReview

Options, comics, past history & what your friends are doing. #SprintDayReview

Story ongoing... rewrite, pitch, rewrite, pitch, and occasionally a green light. #SprintDayReview

English, French, and many more. Pig-Latin still not cut. #SprintDayReview

Large grotesque creature running... So much giggling... Can't un-see.#SprintDayReview

Establishing shots, emotional faces, copy/paste and the "This is awesome!" plan... #SprintDayReview

Falling rocks, smoke plums, prefabs and the best for last, pumpkins! #SprintDayReview

Audio Biomes, exertion palettes & material footsteps. VO with a southern twang...#SprintDayReview

Creatures, dwarves & elves. Where'd all the humans go? #SprintDayReview

Concept Art. Wow. Oooooh! Awesome! Would I wear gold pantaloons? #SprintDayReview

Merchants in fear, multi-selected editing, follower 'Buzz', skipping 'double tap' & another 'KAAAWWW!!' #SprintDayReview

Adaram: Sounds like awesome fun!
Alain Baxter:
It is. Seeing gameplay in raw work is magic.

Active & Passive abilities, head targeting, follower abilities, creature pods and was that a flying nug?!?! #SprintDayReview

Elven ruins, rock formations, sea monkeys and oh my! Sundermount! #SprintDayReview

Footfalls, ambients and one epic "KAAAAAWWW!!!" #SprintDayReview

Story = epical! Lips are sealed. #SprintDayReview

Rogue abilities & German localization. Both are tricky. #SprintDayReview

Branching + resizing + code compare + synching + hand controlled puzzles = 'sitting' #SprintDayReview

Choices & comic books read by alternate histories... #SprintDayReview

Exploration, puzzles and bandits that do more then die. #SprintDayReview

Stained glass snowboards... #SprintReviewDay

(I'm wonder if Alain's stained glass window snowboards are related to David Gaider's recent tweet and picture):

Now you're getting me all excited about DA3! So are they going to change the enviroment according to our actions? That's pretty badass(Mildly reminds me of the Fable universe). Though I hope they give us a neutral option instead ending up polarizing our characters to get the end we want...

I'm not sure how much of that is just concept, but the fact they are even considering it is a good sign. Sounds like they have already decided on who the companions will be and are already developing levels etc. I really like that they appear to be looking into the possibility of dynamic weather conditions as well.

The bit I really liked the sound of was "haunting dreams changing landscapes" - that sounds to me like the Fade, so perhaps they're going to make it look more interesting and wild, changing depending on the person/people trapped inside? Oooo so maybe if Cullen travels into the Fade with our protagonist then his version of the Fade would be twisted and scary!

I honestly hope we don't have to go to the fade again.  The fade part in the Mages circle back in DAO really made the fade seem rather annoying to me.  Out of all the parts of DAO, entering the Fade was the least enjoyable for me.  Everytime I replay DAO I always do the Circle first just to get it out of the way.  I didn't really like how you couldn't deal with the sloth demon without even having to be forced into the Fade in the first place.  It seemed like they were about to let you do that but no matter what happens you get forced into the fade anyways.  Though I hope they change it up to make it seem more like the DA world unlike what they did in DAO, I like what they did with the Fade in DA2 to be honest Image IPB

I don't mind the Fade, but I do feel like they haven't taken full advantage of it's environment. I mean, it's literally a place you go when you dream, full of spirits and demons where anything can happen, so I'd like to see it have some crazy, wild looking landscapes that shift and change depending on the protagonist/companions. Sometimes it could look trippy and other times it could be dark and scary etc. the possibilities are endless with a concept like that.

I think in DAO it was all those Islands that messed me up, I didn't like having to jump from one to another over and over to get what I want.  Perhaps I'm in the minority of players who don't like the Fade all that much.  I like what they did with the Fade in DA2 though, made it seem more realistic to the outside world of the fade since most demons try to simulate the outside world since they want to be there?  It would make things interesting if the Fade also changed with the PCs decisions.

Makes me think that that is something Alistair would say...

And I really liked the KAWWWWW! thing. Some type of bird of course or....maybe a Griffon :o

Oh and I also liked the part about merchants in fear. Seems like people around you are finally going to react to things that happen around them like a battle. Unlike DA2 where they just stood there like nothing was happening.

DA2 only sold barely half of what Origins sold and while I understand how you feel, for $60 some of us want more depth to the dunegons.

The Fade was a 15 minute jaunt in DA2. If they had least let us save our companions again from their nightmares it would have added some depth to it.

People complained about Origins Fade and they moaned about Awakenings Fade and we ended up with what we got in DA2 because of that.   DA2's Fade was so uninspired.  They could have gotten all the character/dog conversations and use those resources where we could have saved our companions.
