Indeed, but since I think that's been asked before, let me try a different one:

If you happened to actually meet Cullen in battle in The Last Straw, instead of just having him talk before Meredith attacks everyone, would you kill him?

If my Hawke was forced to kill him, then yes. She's pro-mage (blood mages aren't included, she and I hate them with a passion) all the way, and would do anything (aside from killing innocents) to save mages from being slaughtered. Her ultimate goal is to protect the circle mages. If he got in the way of her goal, she'd put him down hard. She wouldn't particularly enjoy it, but she'd do it without hesitation.
Though if I had the option to try and reason with him and get him to step down, I'd pick it in a heartbeat. I'd rather fight with my words than with a sword.

Ooh, that's a good question. So you're basically saying, if he hadn't had his change of heart during the Last Straw and instead had been one of the templars you have to fight (as a pro-mage Hawke), would you kill him? The simple answer is yes, since he'd be red and you'd have to.

Actually, it's just "if you ran into him earlier." He may or may not have had a change of heart later on at the change-of-heart place.

Yes, I see. Like I said earlier, if he had been amongst those templars breaking through the gate... Yup, dead if I couldn't get him to see reason (that is, if my Hawke wanted him to see reason).

Now, my canon Hawkes all talked to him A LOT, so they knew that he'd had serious doubts about serving Meredith vs. serving the Order. I imagine my Hawkes would have monologued him, perhaps triggering a change of heart earlier, but I could also see it going down differently.

It reminds me of the fact that I think it's kind of a shame that Meredith went wacko at the end. Crazy!Meredith is much easier for a good character to kill without (as much) remorse. But, what if she was sane-but-on-a-mission!Meredith? What if she could be reasoned with? What if Cullen was the one encouraging Hawke to do that, in the end, finding his absolute duty to the Order nudged him onto sane!Meredith's side? Wow, that would have been an intense ending, probably filled with dead!Meredith, dead!Cullen and grieving!Hawke.

Based on his attitude and character growth alone I became a fan. He's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but he has the potential to become something great...

I agree. He's changed so much from DAO to DAII, and he has the potential to change even more. It's impressive for an NPC, especially one with so small a role in both games.
I'm really interested in his story arc and the direction it's heading. Right now, I'm not sure whether he'll be pro-mage, pro-templar, or somewhere in between during DAI. I guess we'll find out once we start playing, though I hate waiting.

... and hopefully not a red templar/douche bag

If this happens... man, I don't even want to think about it. :crying: Maker, please don't make him red templar.

... Something tells me Cullen is better than that, though. It's just a feeling I have.

If he is, we need to all continue to use the term "red templar/douche bag"! LOL :P

Insert request to not bash other companions you happen not to like here, as I presume the Cullen fans ask of the rest of us.

I honestly don't think that Meredith has ever been seen in the games. It may have been intense, though.
Speaking of which, I keep debating on whether or not it's best for the story for Carver to be a templar or a Grey Warden.

I make Carver a Warden. I couldn't be sure that he wouldn't end up with the rebel Templars, plus I wanted him and Merrill to get together, which probably wouldn't happen at all if I made him a Templar (not that we'll see it in DAI even if they do, lol).

You'll have different reasons for your decision though... or at least, in regards to the last part, anyway.

Yeah, it's hard to say how much the idol affected her over the years. I do like the pro-templar side where you can talk to Mer during the 'find the three escaped mages' quest, and she tells the story about her sister. I wish we had seen more of her humanity like that. And moments of self-doubt, such as during her ravings during the final battle. Or, if we could have cross-examined her "we must be judge, jury and executioner" comment to Cullen when the three mages surrender.

Speaking of which, I keep debating on whether or not it's best for the story for Carver to be a templar or a Grey Warden.

I think I've only done one playthrough of each, so I'm not savvy on the differences. For purely selfish reasons, I prefer seeing Cullen stand up to Meredith all by himself at the end. :P I don't know if Carver shows the same bitterness at being a GW that Bethany does in the DLCs.

This is off-topic, I admit, but... why?

Actually, no. He rather enjoys it.

Ah, that's cool. I guess he shows numerous doubts as a templar, so perhaps the writers intended Beth for the Circle and Carver for the Wardens (as their happiest place)?

Why do I want Carver and Merrill to get together? Because Carver likes her, and if you don't flirt with Merrill she shows some interest towards him too, more so in the DLCs though. I just found it very sweet. Gotta look after my Hawke's little brother.

Maybe I'm a bit odd, but when it came to Hawke's siblings (either Carver or Bethany, depending on the class I was playing) I couldn't bring myself to romance the companions that they fancied (even though one sibling is always dead). I guess it's just the way I was brought up, your family/friends come before men/women when it comes to dating someone you both like, plus I also have a younger brother and sister so Carver and Bethany reminded me of them.

This seems probable, as Carver is wearing Grey Warden armor in Varric's original story.

I don't even like Carver that much, but I do like the mage story otherwise, so...

I don't notice any such interest myself, and am quite certain that they wouldn't be healthy for each other at all--he has much too big of a chip on his shoulder about magic, for starters. Neither, probably, would Bethany and Sebastian, although I doubt Sebastian would be good for much of anyone at this point. Really, I think that only someone like Hawke could do well handling any of the LIs in DA2, they're all sort of out there.

Carver blatantly likes the fact that the Warden's are all super-secretive and he's apart of something that Hawke knows nothing about and can't take all the glory for (even though his cousin is the Warden that defeated the 5th Blight, LOL!)

Can't help who you like!

According to David Gaider (after seeing fanart of the Merrill/Carver pairing) the cancelled Exalted March DLC was supposed to see Carver/Merrill Bethany/Sebastian actually get together (if your Hawke didn't romance Merrill/Seb). DG said that they were really gutted that they couldn't do it.

Now I'm intrigued about the other pairing he mentioned that makes him even sadder...

It would do, you romanced her so it feels alien to you, especially when you're emotionally invested. It's like when I think about female Amell and Cullen getting together, makes me cringe. My Amell belongs to Alistair, dammit!

It's not even that, it's that Carver skeeves me the hell out. He fundamentally does not seem to be a good person, especially when it comes to magic.

Wait, sorry, saying what I'd said before would be hypocritical.

honestly Beth/Seb makes me cringe as well. Everybody's got their own headcanon.
