As far as I know this is never mentioned ingame. Personally, I think Cullen was sent away in order to recover from his trauma at the Ferelden circle, as the 'went on a mage killing spree' ending was retconned. I guess Kirkwall was considered to be 'stable', and therefore a good choice for someone who has been through a lot. Greagoir seems to be a person who cares a lot for his men.Kirrahe1 wrote...
Hello again Cullen thread, hope you are all scoring mad amounts of candy.
So I have a question for you guys that may have already been discussed. I was reading around the BSN thread a while ago and someone made a comment about how Greagoir sent Cullen away to Kirkwall look out for him. His/her statement was that he did it because Cullen’s views were to extreme and didn’t fit in with the tower and therefore he wouldn’t be able to advance in the ranks. I guess I can see that as possible scenario but I always figured he shipped Cullen off because he was too much to handle with everything else also going on. So did I miss something and it talks about it in the game? If it doesn’t what was the impression you guys got from Cullen being in Kirkwall? Was Greagoir looking out for him or was Cullen to much trouble to deal with?

Ah, missed that part in Witch Hunt than. Personally I doubt that no one wanted have him: it is not like he was that fuming mad at mages. Very, very wary and suspicious, yes, but not like 'it's a mage, kill it with fire, now!'LolaLei wrote...
In the Witch Hunt DLC he was sent to Greenfell to recover in a Chantry there (unsure if that was retconned since the timeline for DA2 is a bit messed up). But presumably Greagoir sent Cullen to Greenfell first to level out, and then I guess he decided that it would be unwise to let Cullen return to work at the Ferelden circle due to the constant reminder of his torture, so he sent him to Kirkwall. Hell, maybe Meredith was the only one who wanted him due to his (at that stage) extreme views?
Plenty of Fereldan people went to Kirkwall/Free Marches during the blight, so perhaps that is why it was a logical choice? Away from home, so he won't be constantly reminded of the happenings at the Fereldan circle, yet still not all alone in a strange country?

It depends on how hard he was on the mages in the Ferelden Circle that led Greagoir to send him to Greenfell. I mean, obviously he didn't go on a murderous rampage, but he might have freaked out and injured a few or had a bit of a mental breakdown scared them/whatever (hopefully that'll get answered in DAI) .

All we really know is from Cullen's DA2 codex.
After Cullen returned to his duties, it became clear that he would go to any lengths to enforce the Chantry's rule. His zeal troubled Knight-Commander Greagoir, who feared it unwise to let Cullen watch over the men and women he deemed responsible for his torment.
Greagoir sent Cullen to serve under Knight-commander Meredith in Kirkwall, hoping time away would calm him, and Meredith found Cullen's view of mages similar to her own.
Whether Greagoir primarily was looking out for Cullen or for the Kinloch Hold mages, whether he was getting rid of a problem or supporting a subordinate, is anyone's guess, but the codex does suggest that he was "hoping [to] calm him." Like Lola mentioned, Cullen was supposedly sent to the Greenfell Chantry to "level out," presumably before he was sent to Kirkwall. One can extrapolate that Greagoir did that in order to help Cullen instead of the presumed alternative, imprisonment, dishonorable discharge, or worse, but it's not really explained.
My guess is that Greagoir was trying to help Cullen, but who knows if Greagoir would know that Meredith would capitalize on Cullen's, erm, new world view.

He was not, but whoever is running Kinloch Hold did agree to sunder the Nevarran Accord. Would definitely like to find out what happened to Greagoir.LolaLei wrote...
Reading that codex entry, I would love for Cullen and Greagoir to meet again. Especially if Greagoir sided with the rebelled mages (I can't recall if he was mentioned in the Asunder novel, it's been a long time since I read it).

He probably died. 10 years is a long time when your Greagoir's age, and I can't imagine the whole lyrium business does much to improve one's life expectancy.

That would also mean he's more than likely out of his mind and wouldn't even recognize Cullen, but alive nonetheless.
Makes me wonder who would have taken over. Hadley would be the most likely candidate, being the Knight Captain. He was pretty amicable too.

"Once the tower was rebuilt, Knight-Commander Greagoir stepped down from his post and retired to a life of private contemplation as a brother in the Chantry. His health failed over time, and after refusing treatment, he perished in his sleep. Knight-Commander Cullen was said to be more strict and less trusting of the mages even than Greagoir was. He ruled the Circle with fear."
The real question is: would this all have happened within ten years?

How ironic. DG has a new tumblr post, "On Speculative Slight of Fancy," where he speculates on writing Bethany's continuing adventures. The ironic part is that he mentions that, indeed, he always pictured Carver more as a Grey Warden, as we were discussing yesterday.
See now I always prefer to let Carver join the Templars and Bethany join the Grey Wardens, (though I have to say, I do think she makes a better Circle Mage), and that's purely because they are more miserable in those situations I feel. Betany finds peace in the Circle and Carver achieves in the Grey Wardens. Too happy for me! Much more interesting to make them suffer.
Shame that blog post sort of ruins my hopes for Bethany/Carver DLC though.

One of the DA:O epilogues talks about Greagoir retiring. Of course... it seems slightly retconned since Cullen probably would never succeed him at this point, but I could see the other points remaining, about Greagoir retiring to a life of quiet contemplation and then dying.

He was pretty old, so I guess he might have retired? That being said, the First Enchanter was still going strong in Asunder, so who knows?

OMGosh that Shale comic would have devastated me lol As I imagine Fenris would no more mention Hawke than Isabela did.
Bethany, Seb, and Nathaniel... well, I like two of those characters :innocent: I must have killed you to see that. He really likes Seb/Beth, doesn't he? I can't imagine a duller pairing.

Yeah, hard to say. Looking again, it says Greagoir retired "once the tower was rebuilt." How long would that really take? Probably less than a decade. Of course, he could choose to retire whenever. But, agree, Irving always looked older than Greagoir to me (and DA ages are always SPOT ON that way!LolaLei wrote...

To see what?? I don't know what you're talking about... I didn't see anything about a certain person going to a certain Free Marches citystate, nor any mention of a certain person possibly ahem "adventuring" with a prince or an angsty hot Grey Warden. Nope. Nothing like that...motomotogirl wrote...

I will agree with him that Beth was a bit of an unpainted canvas. I just hope she paints it with someone else.
