Correct me if I'm wrong, I know the keeper has taken the demon within her to protect Merril, but if the keeper wasn't strong enough she wouldn't have told Merril to stay away from the mirror, if the keeper wouldn't have taken the demon in her, dont you think it would have possesed Merril instead?

Hmm never looked at it that way, thats a good point
I've had a diffrent impression of Marethari, I thought she wanted to protect Merril from demons, or any dangers in that area, and when I took Merril, Marethari (to me) seemend like she didnt really wanted to give her up

I think Marethari's heavily mixed up. She loves Merrill, sort of, but loves what she sees as the only true version of Merrill, namely the one who doesn't go around fiddling with Eluvians, and wants her back at any costs. I... don't know if she'd want to kill Merrill outright, although "attack a varterral" seems a bit suspicious, but I do think she might well succumb to pride in some other way.Hmm never looked at it that way, thats a good point

Hmm, I never thought of that. It seems logical, seeing as how Marethari is the Keeper. It just seems to me that it would be more... what's the word?... "profitable" to possess her.Xilizhra wrote...

Besides, Merrill never seemed prideful to me. I don't think a pride demon could manipulate her like it did Keeper Marethari. Merrill's just too sweet and kind to be prideful.

Maybe our protag will age throughout the game. Not like Hawke did, but maybe we'll actually have a day and time thingy somewhere and we'll see the effects of time and so on on our main character and his/her companions. Now that would be interesting.

Well she certainly had confidence that she was always in control of the situation, and that's a form of pride.
My various Hawke's reacted differently to Merrill. Some supported her, some consoled her, some argued with her. The Hawke who's romancing her supports her, but I've not completed that romance and probably never will; just played DA2 too many times at this point >.<

I don't think the two perspectives are mutually exclusive. Marethari and a Hawke who is rivalling Merrill have a great deal in common (and considering how strongly Merrill feels toward them both, that kind of puts her in a very special position). Both are prideful in that they believe they know Merrill's business better than herself, and Merrill is the better person in understanding their feelings without cutting them out of her life.ag99 wrote...

This also happens to be why I think rivalmancing Merrill is a great give-and-take. Both of them are kind of idiots in their own way, but they complete each other into a stronger whole.

Friendmancing, I believe with a tremendous fervor, is far, far healthier for Merrill. They can harmonize into the strongest whole of all. This also happens to be why I think rivalmancing Merrill is a great give-and-take. Well, that form of pride isn't necessarily a bad thing. Having confidence is a good thing, as long as you don't over estimate your abilities.

But might she have? We'll never know because Marethari made that sacrifice for her

I know how you feel. I can't rivalmance my OTP LI, Fenris. I just can't. It seems too damaging for him. Friendmance is the healthier, more loving option. (imo)

I rival Fenris primarily because I don't actually think I can friend him, at least not fully. I get 20 rivalry just by talking to him after his recruitment and 15 more after the Gallows conversation, and that's just for starters. There just aren't enough slavers to fight to gain enough friendship points.I know how you feel. I can't rivalmance my OTP LI, Fenris. I just can't. It seems too damaging for him. I can't rival any of them, even if I'm not all that keen on the character(s). The way I see it, your companions accompany you on dangerous tasks, put themselves in danger just working with you, and help protect you in battle. Sure, they all have their reasons for following you, but they become like your family and even if you don't always see eye to eye with them you grow attached to them (or at least, I do).
To me, if they're willing to stand by my protagonist then the least my protagonist can do is protect them and help them out when they need it.

Yes you have to do some serious meta-gaming to get friendship with Fenris

Eeesh, tell me about it! I had to meta-game to buggery to get all of them in friendship. I even managed it with Carver, although it wasn't quite at 100%.

The only ones I rival are Isabela and Fenris, and the only time I ever get in the way of any of their goals is in killing Castillon, because of the whole slavery operation. I also don't argue with or insult them, if that helps.LolaLei wrote...

Ambience and atmosphere, maybe? Mood lighting during the sexy time scenes?

I guess it is mostly the ambience, overall and during certain quests perhaps? I also think it might have something to do with the mood of characters, although that should have been set in stone by now... *shrug* me and my logic are usually far far off
