Pretty freaking cool, if you ask me!

[Plus, the plot idea he chose to do includes a flash of Cullen!]

This is kinda cool. DG has been writing about the nuts and bolts of writing a game. I've only just caught up on Part 3, but he's doing it as an interactive exercise with the fans, asking for feedback for a short plot he will write as a result so folks can see his process.

hmm this sounds interesing
"Upon reaching the stairs, an encounter fires— if the player is dressed
as a templar, it’s with Cullen. If dressed as a mage, it’s with Orsino.
The player has the option to bluff, to plead with Cullen/Orsino to let
them see Bethany (both will reluctantly agree, so long as the player
leaves immediately afterwards), to lie about something urgent happening
elsewhere (giving them limited time with Bethany), or to spectacularly
fail— which results in Cullen/Orsino calling the templars, and the
player being forced to run out (as in Step 3). Provided the player gets
to proceed, go to Step 5."

LOL In my response I actually pointed to something similar as a possible problem, that instead of sneaking in my character likely would have just gone to talk to Cullen directly. Of course, *cough* I left out the obligatory flirting part.motomotogirl wrote...

He responded once to a msg I sent him, I forget what. I said something silly/snarky, he said something silly back. Good times.

Thanks. I wonder what he'll say. We did sometimes get quests like that, though, where I had to read the quest journal to figure out where I was supposed to go. So, is that "incorrect" plot writing or me just being dense? LOL Guess we'll find out.littlenikki wrote...
Ah, that's really neat! Had no idea how writing for a video game worked, so it's cool for him to post an example of how the process works and getting the fans involved in it. Think you're spot on w/ what's wrong w/ the process R2, actually had to go back to Step 1 and re-read it once I saw him mention Samson in Step 2, thought I missed it.

Okay, scenario question time! Which way would you rather encounter Cullen in the game?
1. Cullen has left or been booted from the Order. He's a broken shell of a man. We find him in a tavern or in some other deplorable state.
2. Cullen has been imprisoned by the Order. We are forced to rescue him so as to recruit him into the Inquisition.
3. Cullen is still a part of the Order, and he follows the Seekers. We will have to convince him that Lambert (if he's still alive) and the Seekers are wrong.
4. Cullen is still a part of the Order, but he leads a rebel faction, or he's working secretly for the Divine.
While I think any of these could work if written well, my preference would be for 2 or 4.
For me, 1 seems kind of cliched, especially if Cullen is going to become a love interest. (The whole rescue fantasy thing is kind of stale.) I'd like to see Cullen show some backbone of his own, not just rely on the Inquisitor for all of his development. He was strong enough to survive physical and mental torture. I just don't see him just sitting around idly when it all hits the fan again.
3, on the other hand, seems a bit contrived. If seeing Meredith lose it and then having to put his own life on the line to defy her isn't enough to make him question his more extreme beliefs, I'm not sure exactly what the Inquisitor could say that would make an impression.
I could see Cullen either openly turning against the Order (and all the peril that would entail for him as a "traitor") or working within the Order for reform, to uphold the ideals of protecting and guiding mages rather than just imprisoning and suppressing them.
Honestly, though, if it's well written and the character behaves realistically, I'm fine whichever way it goes.

What I find interesting about this, is that it adds a bit more insight into Cullen's character. Just a little, at least. After all he chose to include CULLEN here, not, for example, Thrask. The fact that Cullen would agree to allow Hawke to see his/her sibling at ALL in this scenario (if you manage to pick the right options) speaks volumes.
(Or, you know, I'm reading too much into an example.

That isn't the one I want, I don't exactly have a preference. I've got great faith that the powers that be will make it very interesting and maybe even unexpected. However it did give me pause because if you think about it the two main protagonists in both origins and DA2 did "rescue" Cullen on first encounter. ( unless you were a Mage in origins). In the first game it's from Uldred and the second he probably would have been destroyed by the demons had Hawke not provided back up. So from a full circle stand point I wonder if we don't pull him out of some kind of a jam when we meet him as the inquisitor. Or the writers are bored of that. Who knows really.

I don't usually post (in fact I always feel stupid awkward when I do so I try not to) so I apologize for being late on this but HI! I really love a ton of your comments and ideas! You add a lot of interesting thoughts to the discussion and really hold your own. So glad you could make it to the party! Now excuse me while I go back to creepily lurking in the darkest corner. ; )

Agree, with Mahumia. Come on in, the water's fine! Honestly, the more you do it, the less it may feel like each post has to have some particular weight or gravitas. We love having your insights! But we also just like to chat about something we all love.Kirrahe1 wrote...
You know, a while back when we were all discussing the PTSD symptoms Cullen has shown signs of it didn't feel terribly awkward for me. I believe it's because that particular subject is something I spend hours dealing with. But for whatever reason whenever I ask a question or voice an opinion it always feels too... I don't know....extemporaneous to me lol. I also don't usually (ever) post on anything so maybe it's like driving. Ya gotta practice to get over the initial fear lol! But thank you, your kind to try and make me feel less like a turtle on my back : D

Yes. Specifically how writing for an RPG is different than just writing a novel or whatever.LolaLei wrote...
So, what's the exercise supposed to be for exactly? Is it just him demonstrating how quests are developed and structured in the writers pit with limited word resources, or something?
